I quit drinking cold turkey 34 years ago. No AA or rehab of any kind. He’s right when he says you have to want to do it. Nobody can make you do it. That said if AA is the way that helps you then by all means use that method, do whatever it takes.

John is 100% spot on. I am sober 9 years my way. Tried AA and found the whole thing cult like and so depressing. As John says he didn't want to live in the past. There is talk about the 13 th step that AA refute. Daly is 100% accurate in everything he said here. Not saying AA ain't for some people but they would lead you to believe you can never get sober without them. Seen too many guys at top tables sharing about honesty then two weeks later you spot them at a hotel having breakfast with a woman they picked up in AA and it wasn't their wives. When new vulnerable women entered AA they were like bees to honey offering their help but for us guys I found help less forthcoming. On a personal note I found AA a load of bs and the rehab facilities that specifically work on their rules were crap. 3 years of AA and 1 6 week rehab only made me go out and drink more until one day I decided it was time to leave the party and that was it, 9 years later still doing fine. Good luck to anyone seeking sobriety and you may find it in AA but for John and people like myself we found another way. Good luck all.

Well said. Everyone acts like the answer is rehab and sitting around talking, which it is for some people, but it can also make things so much worse if you are investing all of this time into concentrating on alcohol and thinking about what other people do with alcohol. Best thing to do is to push forward and not just focus your entire life on not doing something and actually talking about that. it can be problematic for people that aren't religious, because that is a vital part of the 12 step program, and it doesn't respect other people's beliefs, or lack thereof.

Aa has actually harmed more people than it’s helped. And people that overcome addiction without it far outnumber those who are in it. 12 step programs are shrinking, and they will soon be rightfully relagsted to a much less influential place in society. They are inflexible closed systems that are not open to new data. If you want to leave 12 step and be free there are thousands of us supporting each other in forums and the people there are much happier and have a great sense of humor. Also I always thought it was unjust for Arnold Palmer to have a drink named after him and John not have one. If there were ever a golfer who should have a drink named after him it’s Daly 👍🏻

Some people quit on their own... that doesnt make them alcoholic.... there are drunks, and there are alcoholics, they are very different. Most Anyone can get sober, but rebuild your life, become a productive member of society, and most importantly WORK A PROGRAM TO STAY SOBER! STAYING SOBER IS THE TRICK! I've seen many people at A A meetings that weren't alcoholic, but claimed sobriety from a disease they didnt have! It comes down to this, A A works, better than any other program to date, but it gets used and abused like any other organization that is adfected by mans ethics. A A does more to help alcoholics, and without a pricetag.... its the only place, where everyone is welcomed.

As someone working daily to quit drinking, the people who are most toxic are the AA nutjobs saying there are no other ways. Do you not understand how discouraging that is? There is no one way to beat this, in the same way there is no one way to beat any illness. Grow up and recognize that recovery is a spectrum not bound to you as much as the person seeking treatment. There's no shame in hyping what worked for you, but the sheer inflexibility some of you demonstrate is downright sinful and works against the message of recovering alcoholics.
