Great lesson and insight into drop D tuning on bass. Not sure I’d call it John Deacon’s secret weapon. He only used it on 4 songs (Prophet’s Song, White Man, Fat Bottomed Girls and Headlong). They were all songs written by Brian May that utilise drop D guitar tuning. I suspect John’s decision to use drop D on the bass was rather heavily influenced by what Brian was doing on guitar.

John has very good taste as well: his favorite bass player was Chris Squire. He's very melodic as well. One of my favorites.

*Another great use for a Hipshot Bass X-Tender is to use one on the low B string on a five string bass, so that you can use it to instantly go back and forth between standard tuning and **_Drop A_** tuning, which extends your range to a full seven semi-tones below the low E on a standard tuned four string. And unlike **_Drop D_** on a four string, it still leaves your E string, along with the A, D, & G, in standard tuning, so the tuning of the top four strings on the five string will remain in standard tuning, with only the low B/A string requiring the two semi-tone repositioning of notes all the way down the string...*

I transferred my Hipshot from my Jazz bass when I replaced it with a 5-string bass. It's great for frightening guitarists! Before I got the Hipshot I was constantly frustrated by not having a low D, particularly as I was primarily playing rock, blues and metal, so a lot of songs were in A and a low D would have been very useful. I'd recommend it as an essential bit of kit.

I keep my 4 string fender precision in D standard tuning all the time. No matter what string I'm on, or where I'm playing on the fret board, every note sounds more round and full compared to playing in E standard. I've tuned my 5 string fender jazz down to D standard as well for the same reason. But I leave the B string in B.

Doesn't dropping to D throw out the intonation on that string? All of the frets on that string should be out of tune.

The hipshot detuner is useless unless you are dropping in the middle of a song. You should always tune in between songs and you can just drop it regularly that time. Just in my opinion of course 😊

@AugustThor438

@@ebassguitar I’m not talking about intonation, I’m just saying that if you are tuning between song anyways then you have time to tune your E string to D at the same time. Unless you don’t tune between songs

Just a tip for future videos, if you're doing some "listen to the difference" thing, shut up. It's hard to hear the note if your talking over it. Just pause and let people hear what you're trying to demonstrate.
