John Deere 318 420 Rear PTO Install: Part 1

Installing the rear 2000 rpm PTO or MCS pulley on the rear of a 318, 322, 332, 420 or 430 John Deere garden tractor.

The rock shaft doesn’t have to be removed at all actually. There is a round plate that bolts together on the rear of the pto clutch assembly that the female output shaft are on that slide onto the gearbox itself. Take those 4 bolts out and separate it. Pto clutch assembly first and then gearbox WITH that plate already slid on the gearbox splines slides right up in there. Then bolt it back together. 😉

Ahh the old finger smasher 9000.... my finger throbs just thinking about it. 2yrs ago I slipped up installing wheel weights on my 316 and reflex had me try and catch it. My middle finger got caught between the weight and the asphalt and the finger tip bone was now in 3 pieces. All healed up ok, and now when I’m working with heavy parts I recite “if it’s gonna go, just let it fall” over and over.

What is an MCS pulley and why did you put it in after the gearbox debacle? I need to put a rear pto in a 420 but now I am confused.

Did you ever do a part two follow up video to this one? I bought a John Deere 430 about a year ago and have been looking for a clutch and PTO since I got it. I found one last week and bought it. I have been looking for an install video. Mine is just the clutch, PTO and bracket that holds the reduction box, but it looks just like what you have. I need to get the spring that goes in the drive shaft. I just want to see it done before I wing it.

You dont need to take the rock shaft off you just need to loosen it and pull it back that's how I did mine

The couple times I have just loosened mine I end up knocking it the rest of the way out and generally creating some type of mess. So taking it out is just easier for me. With the small amount of additional clearance that is required I am sure you could leave the rockshaft on the machine.

Hello what way does the front pto spin? I found a snowblower off a 420 trying to see if spins the same way as my 1445 #2

Is the clutch supposed to make any kind of noise? I just installed one on my 332, and at low RPM, it makes a really loud clicking noise. Abruptly stops about about quarter throttle. Does it with it switched on and off. Noise is worse with it on.

Have you checked the air gap on the clutch? The clutch could be rubbing because the air gap is too close. It should be 0.018 in all three check points on the clutch.

@@mmrbeef Yeah, I set the gap. Spun it by hand and powered it up a few times to be sure the gap was good too. I replaced both bearings with good name brand ones, new shaft, key, and spring on the hydro end. Everything is nice and snug. The sound is clearly coming from the clutch. You can feel the vibration on the pulley bracket and on the coil housing. I removed the strap that bolts to the frame to eliminate that too, though I had it soft mounted with rubber. It doesn't make any noise at all unless the RPM is below about quarter throttle. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lV60d2CGf9qMgac

A question what's the difference on thec318 to the 420 pto I heard the 420 is 2000 and the others are lower, can the 400 tiller be modified in the chain gearing to accommodate the units PTO please help

Are you wondering about the front PTO? The front belt driven PTO on the 420/430 is linked to the PTO shaft. The shaft spins at 2000 rpm. The 318-332 has just a belt pulley that spins at engine speed or 3450 rpm at wot. Hope that helps.

HI mmrbeef Could you or anyone guide me to exactly what I need to add PTO to my 322? I see the output shaft on mine and my dash has a switch for the rear PTO. How hard are these to find? MCS and 2000 to 540 gear box? please help thank you update-- ok I see I need the gear box and the mcs for sure as the pto would be running a generator. Where do I find these?

Rear 2000 rpm PTO are expensive and hard to find. There is no OEM 540 gear box. To run a generator you would need to determine the input speed for the generator head. Once that is determined you could build a pulley system - either from the 2000 rpm PTO or from the MCS pulley to the gen head. When running a generator it’s always hard figuring out the engine and PTO speed to get the correct voltage and hertz.

Isn't there a rubber O ring M88993 that goes in the shaft before you put the spring T 66742 in? Does that spring just drop in?

I thought about it but honestly the fit is loose enough that it should be just fine. I've got some other work to do on the 318 later this winter and I might revisit the PTO then.

canuckguy worried so I have installed and uninstalled this PTO twice. When I finally get everything like I want and set up correctly I will probably use some type of antisieze.

The Sundstrand 15U pump is the same for 318, 322, 330, 332, 420 and 430. Early 420's did not have the free wheeling valves. Something to be aware of is input shaft type. There are two versions a round and square type, depending on year of the machine.

In this case the parts have been repainted.... they are not new. Part 2 might take a week or so to get out... I have not had a lot of time to edit those clips.

Many places, this rear PTO I found on eBay a few years ago. Other parts, I have pallets of parts I keep around or I go to Deere, eBay, Facebook. Lots of different places.

Correct Part T66742 - It should be at the dealer sometime this week. I make note of that in part two.

@@mmrbeef What is the spring for? I've read it's needed and I've read it's not needed. I'm restoring and installing a rear PTO on my 332. The shaft I have has the Zerk fitting, and I've got a new o-ring for the pump output spline. Also, the box o' parts that I got off fb market had two washers that were on the clutch-MCS spline as received. I've never seen these before anywhere on my research. I just as much assume they weren't supposed to be there, as the MCS pulley/bearings/ect... were assembled wrong when I got it.
