The huge chrome stack alone is good for at least 50 horse ,way cool!!! Deere and IH both had to fail with those V8's but these conversions you've shown us saved many from the scrappers! Thanks for the off the path videos!!

I am particularly fond of the videos you post on older high HP tractors; especially the ones that have been re-powered. Considering the expense of new equipment, even in a low interest environment, maintaining and rebuilding the equipment you already own seems to be a sensible approach. I love the straight pipe on this one!,

Was really wanting to know about the re-power when I clicked on the video, then as soon as I heard the engines sound I knew it was a cummins conversion. Then later in video my most honest guess was confirmed, 855 Cummins. Good video!!!

Although the original V8 diesel was a beautiful engine the Cummins repower made a good tractor a great tractor. I used a new 8850 for a week in the spring of 1986 and loved it. Later on I purchased a 1995 JD 8970 with the 400 hp Cummins and that was a fantastic tractor. All the things the 8850 was but better cab, handling, ride, hydraulics and gobs of reserve power. We couldn't seem to ever overload this monster with any of our biggest equipment. By today's standards they are both small tractors compared to the 600 plus hp tractors. Good video.

I ran one for 4400 hours before the engine needed to be overhauled. The 955 Deere was an awesome up until that point. We pulled a 53-foot chisel plow. We had 20.842 triples on the tractor. It needed that much extra flotation because the tractor weight in at 50,000 lbs. It was a pullin son-of-a-gun!

Very cool. It is a tough tractor. I think the 955 V8 was also offered in the Marine market as a 600 hp boat engine. I know off two other farms that ran triples on 8850s. One in NY and one in KY. A 53 ft chisel plow will put a tractor to work. Did you repower your 8850?

Those were dang good tractors from the 80's. The 8850 had 370HP. It does too. Looked it up on TractorData.

The 8850 as I mentioned in the video was 370 from the factory and repowered it was 400 hp with a 450 hp option. The 955 V-8 was offered for large boats like a commercial fishing boat at 600 hp.

If I remember right what led to problems with the V8 engine was the mounting points on the Block where the frame would twist and as a result it would crack the block. I think the Kenzie repower actually had a sleeve that went in there where the block would mount too instead of the frame.

John Deere used the engine as part of the frame up to the 60 series.That design was a big part of their engine trouble, lots of blown head gaskets. If the front axle hit the stop and put some twisting force on the engine you had problems.I was told to never ever take one thru the road ditch. I heard that the V8 was a very reliable engine in stationary applications like irrigation motors or large generators.

maybe someone might know this, my 2008 john deere 5525 (open cab) will not move. it starts up great the front end loader works great all the lights but when you put it in forward or reverse it won’t move, doesn’t even try. i’ve checked everything, safety switches the hydraulic fluid. any suggestions?

Was it acting up before you parked it? Obviously, it is in the drive-line somewhere....clutch packs or tranny sorry but unless you are mechanically inclined just call Deere for a sacn...

Ron Meier i put out hay about 2 weeks ago did just fine, (the clutch is all good), and went to start it, it started up fine went to go and didn’t even try to move. i looked around to see if it had leaked any fluid but that’s all good too. 🤷‍♀️ 🤔

They really are very similar. Green 370 hp from the factory and blue 360 hp from the factory. Both are powered by Cummins 855 cubic engines.

So talk to me about fuel consumption on equal tasks. Which tractor is more efficient in this video- blue or green? Which one is easier on hydraulic fluid and transmission fluid?

I would have to operate them to know. Both have an 855 cubic inch engine. The NH has a newer N14 engine. The blue is 360 hp the green was 370 but now 400. The blue is 10 years newer. The rest I would have to operate the tractors to know. I would guess they are pretty close.

My friend John found this 8850 and filmed it for me. He films Wisconsin farm’s for BTP. It was a filming day find in the country side. The tractor was just out to be a tug that day. He got some great but short footage. I did my best to maximize what was available for the video.

That was a pretty typical scenario out here in the midwest for the past year or so. I was working in the Waterloo Engine works when the V8s were being built. Not one of their better ideas, to say the least. : )

It is a shame how wet this year has been for many farms. That is neat you worked at the engine plant when the 955 was built. I always thought it was odd John Deere introduced a V8 when all the other tractor brands had moved away from them.

I am not sure. A 4wd is pretty well balanced. Today there are eight packages for the rear of the 9Rs but I don’t recall weights being added to the 50 series.

Our dealership John P Halpin &Sons located in Henrietta, NY sold one 8850. The vehicle returned many times for warranty repairs. Transmission case out of alignment. Constantly bearing failure Eventually replacing trans case .After that a happy customer. After the dealership closed my brothers and I bought a new CaseIH 9130 much superior to any comparable Deere product.

I do not know. Unfortunately I could not find pricing as the Kinze repowers were done in the 90’s and I could find no record of cost. This is a challenge I find in covering tractors from 1995-2018. No records exist of original cost.

It's pretty interesting how the Ag industry has seemingly struggled so much with V-engine configurations, and V8s especially, when so many other industries haven't had any meaningful problems with V-configurations. Now I've heard that these tractors had some cooling issues, that there may have been some manufacturing issues with the early engines, and I can't imagine using the block as a stressed frame member is the best idea in a giant articulated 4WD like this, so maybe the engine design it self wasn't necessarily the problem when it was all said and done. It's just too bad that we haven't seen any V8s more recently in tractors. With that said, shout out to AGCO/Challenger for putting that big bad SOB SUSI 16.8l V12 in their larger 'E' tractors, which I haven't found any real reported issues with - so any comments about how "diesels don't work in Vs" can just stop right there, and I don't know what the hell the logic of this idea was ever supposed to be in the first place - Anyway, with that said, it's not surprising that they didn't produce a whole lot of tractors with those, that must've been an extraordinarily expensive engine after all. But DAMN it's cool to see that you could have a 16.8l V12 powered tractor!

Wrong. We have four 3408s with over a million miles on them all heavy haulers not an issue one. Basic maintenance my father bought them all new. Great motors. The c18 came about due to emissions. It's a good engine as well but the 3408 and 3508 are amazing engines used in trucks, marine, construction, and agriculture equipment

@@geauxcat3408 my experience with 3408 has not been good. I've had pc, di, and E. The di was the best. But no comparison to the c18. I run a c18 in my semi truck now instead of c15. I still have an 1978 international 4300 with a 3408 in it. It was a pc. We converted to di. It's a fun truck. Most of my 3408 experience is with 988 cat loaders. Only 450hp. And wouldn't stay together. Always something to fix.

Completely unsubstantiated "logic" - take it from someone that's built a large variety of engines, gas and diesel. Why the Ag industry has struggled to offer a competent V-engine, well there's a number of reasons why each individual design has failed. But, no, this make believe fabricated "diesels can't V" bullshit is just that. And, there's a HUUUUGE amount of mining equipment, mid-size construction equipment, the largest ships in today's seas, stationary applications, etc. that feature V-configuration diesel engines that operate as close to flawlessly as can be possible. Hell, some of the largest engines in the world are 25,000HP V14 & V16 cargo ship engines. "Dynamics", "balance"(as you're portraying it), all words that aren't actually describing anything but what's in your imagination. BTW, Challengers running the Sisu 16.8l V12 are running strong, haven't heard of any of those needing a repower Pistons don't give a fuck about what way they're oriented to the horizon, nor about which way any other piston is oriented, plain and simple. Any V-engine is just 2 inlines sharing a common crank, with the primary and secondary harmonics being taken care of by the equal distribution of each cylinder around the crankshaft, and the harmonic balancer(...hence the name...) on the crank snout - which even I6 engines require.
