Cass Elliott got her fame as a member of The Mamas And The Papas, a folk rock band that created many wonderful hits. You'd like them, I think. Their song "California Dreaming" is a true classic, as is "Monday, Monday". Their sound was one of the defining ones of the 60's.

Cass is making a big joke when she claimed this is her song. As you heard from applause, this is one of the most famous John Denver songs ever. I was 15 at the time of this performance, and The Midnight Special was the only kind of late-night programming for music. Their harmonies are amazing, and when you think about the fact that there is no auto-tuning and this is absolutely live, it makes it all the more amazing to hear those voices together!

John Denver, that froggy looking little guy is revered among lyricists for his ability to write simple sincere, heartfelt songs, something, it turns out, few people can do. One of the great singer song writers in American pop music. Always loved him, though when I was in high school, in the 70's, with Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith out there, no one would admit to liking him. Sincerity just wasn't cool to any teenager I knew. We Denver fans had to keep it to ourselves. Thanks for the reaction.

@@keithjones8889 Yeah, we lived in Manassas, VA for a while when I was growing up but mostly in the Va. Beach area. Our family was very eclectic with their musical tastes so I grew up listening to a variety of styles. My oldest brother played drums and leaned towards the rock genre but my tastes were all over the place from Elton John to Helen Reddy, Mac Davis to Anne Murray, Linda Ronstadt to John Denver. When we were just young school kids we didn’t like history too much (even living that close to history) so our mom bought a Johnny Horton album to peak our interest since we liked music so we kids fell hard for that. Lol. She loved the Platters and Tom Jones, Nat King Cole. She loved to dance. I didn’t care who didn’t like my musical tastes and I never caught any flak for it nor felt the need to hide it. Music transcends and it was more about the lyrics to me as I got older.

Unfortunately, Cass Eliot was definitely made fun of because of her weight, even while she was renowned for her talent and beautiful voice. She died at the age of 32 of a heart attack, and a vicious rumor was spread that she died by choking on a ham sandwich. Even before the age of the internet, people found ways to be heartless and cruel. This performance with John Denver, who has sadly also passed away, is so beautiful. Another Cass Eliot song to listen to would be Dream a Little Dream of Me. Her vocals in California Dreamin' with the Mamas and the Papas also really stand out. She was an incredibly gifted vocalist.

_“Leaving On A Jet Plane” was not a song about the Vietnam War. John Denver, a relatively unknown musician in the Los Angeles folk scene, had written the song at an airport in 1966, and it’s pretty clear from the lyrics that it’s all about an unfaithful traveling musician: “There’s so many times I’ve let you down / So many times I’ve played around / I tell you now, they don’t mean a thing.” But in pop music, authorial intent doesn’t really matter. What matters is what the songs do when they go out into the world - the significance that these songs take on when they enter the lives of millions upon millions of strangers. Peter, Paul & Mary recorded “Leaving On A Jet Plane” in 1967, and they included it on Album 1700, the LP that they released that year. But it didn’t become a single until 1969, when the Vietnam War was near its peak, both as an armed conflict and as a whole generation’s defining event. And so “Leaving On A Jet Plane” became a Vietnam War song._ -- Tom Breihan (Stereogum)

You hit the nail on the head. Alot of the artists in the '60s and '70s didn't usually move around alot on stage, they had no choreographed dance moves (sans The Jackson 5), no affectations or vocal acrobatics...their talent was enough and it was presented honestly.

A different time. I remember quite a few had back up dancers. The Osmond brothers had some dancing too. Fun! If singers today move around and dance, it doesn't make them dishonest. Most people today enjoy the dancing. I love the old music when people only had to know how to stand or sit still and sing. The competition today is much tougher. They need to sing, dance, act. That's just how it is.

John's family moved around a lot because his dad was an Air Force pilot trainer. Though he built his house in Aspen, Colorado, it seems to me he never learned to settle down. He married Annie but he was always traveling and she was a homebody. Even when he was not touring, he was in Africa of Russia or some other place trying to bring attention to the needs of third world countries and people without hope. Because I was raised in an evangelical church that had missionaries coming and going, I had been made aware of these needs since about age 3, but many had not. Cass Elliot, better known as Mama Cass back in the 70's was the main female singer for The Mama's and the Papa's another great singing group of that era. However, it was the group Peter, Paul and Mary who made this song John wrote popular. He said he was driving down the road one day and the PP&M version came on the radio. The first song of his on the radio, and he was so excited, he stopped at the first pay phone, called the radio station and asked them to play it again!

Ugh. I think you would love reacting to Denver's "Rocky Mountain High," which (imho) shows off his voice even more-- it just soars, just like the landscape he's singing about. Also, Cass Eliot is one of the two "Mamas" in the group "The Mamas and the Papas," and you should check her/them out-- I think you'd like them in general, and their harmonies in particular. John Denver was immensely popular as a folk singer/guitarist because of his poetic lyrics, beautiful acoustic guitar, and extraordinarily clear voice. He was a passionate environmentalist and his lyrics often reflect his appreciation of the beauty in nature. Rocky Mountain High is, IMO, the best example of John's work. Country Roads is an homage to West Virginia's Blue Ridge region & the state's banner song. Annie's Song, written for his wife, is purely exquisite. John tragically died in his early 50's off the coast of Southern California when his experimental glider plane crashed.

John Denver has sooooo many great songs. I can't listen to him without crying because it makes me miss my mom every time. He was her absolute favorite and she gave me an appreciation for his beautiful voice. You should definitely cover more of his songs!

Oh yes, I remember this song. I'm 52, I didn't know who sang it. I just adore folk music. I grew up listening to the radio while traveling from Homestead to Miami to go to school and my mom's job in the 70's. That was a haul so I listened to a lot of radio😊

Great Reaction, Polo!! 😍 I love that you actually LISTEN to the lyrics and people's hearts in the music....SO important. Nice to see someone feel the impact of the music. The Mamas & The Papas did a performance on The Ed Sullivan Show (Dec 1966) and that song showcases Cass's vocal abilities...and, she performed Dream A Little Dream Of Me (I think her performance on It's Lulu show, 1970, is a good recording....) is one of my favorite live performances by her....but: no matter what group or duet you hear her sing: she is always most distinctively Cass! John Denver has a vast catalog - some I feel you might like: Take Me Home, Country Roads is another that shows his ability to make you feel nostalgia, Rocky Mountain High, Sunshine On My Shoulders, and the song he wrote for his wife: Annie's Song are, as most of his songs, so emotive that they suck-you-in...and, such a FAMILIAR sounding voice: even if you're experiencing him for the first time. Reminds me of campfire music and just being-with-people music!! SO GOOD. I'm so glad you are diverse in your reactions and appreciate your open mind to experience and enjoy! THANKS for the REACTIONS, POLO!! It's fun to revisit some of my "old friends" through your experiences! HUGS!! ❤❤❤❤❤

I've been listening since about 1967. On my birthday I got me a portable record player and one 45! James Brown Papa's Got a Brand New Bag!!! Music has moved me since then. When I listen to music I want to hear what I heard/hear on the radio and don't care for live performances because a lot of the aspects of the music is lost and then you get the audience 'interrupting' the song. In the early 70's I got a 4 track tape quadrophonic stereo system that could record! Recorded a lot of songs on the few tapes I had lol My mom liked older country songs. My sisters all liked the new stuff as did my brothers. I love it all, pop, rock, jazz, country, classical, you name it! Albeit quite a few 'folk' songs don't float my boat lol Some of them are just too out there. But then there is some folk music that is Primal!! Taiko Drum corp or group (1980's Seattle)? Native American, Aboriginal! Swahili(?)...

John Denver was a legend amongst legends with some of the best written and sung songs. The song was originally written by John for Peter, Paul, and Mary, the premiere folk trio of their era! Mama Cass had such a pure voice!

We liked folk singers back then and poetry and harmonies in music were very moving spiritually. They reflected the common virtues all people have in other people to make it in this life.We need to get back to that reasoning and yes that song has love in it….we need that most of all.

I saw John in concert in the later 70's (college student in the nosebleed seats). The band took a 20 minute break and he got out an acustic guitar and played and sang during the entire band break. Absolutely awesome entertainter.

My first ever "real" concert was John Denver in the Fall of 1973. It was him and 2 backing singers. The plane with the band and all instruments except John's was delayed so the three of them took the stage in the clothes they travelled in. Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert had to borrow guitars and a banjo but John and Co. put on a great 2 hour show. He loved performing, loved music, and loved people.

John wrote this autobiographical song about the fact that he was constantly gone touring to promote his music, and hated to leave the one he loved. We didn't have Spotify or Prime Music back in those days. We had the radio, but really, if you didn't go out and promote your music live, it wouldn't go anywhere. I never got a chance to see Cass Elliot live, but I did see John Denver three times in concert, and he was fabulous live! BTW, good seats cost me $5 a piece!

This is one of the songs that takes me right back to the back seat of that big ol' Chevy or sitting on the floor next to the HiFi in the living room..... just a kid listening to the music my parents had playing. One of the songs I learned by heart before I hit double digits because they just were played in my ears so much. When my mom was a young mom, many years younger than I am now, and I was just a little kid..... Miss ya mom!

John Denver was one of the most beloved entertainers with a voice that soared! Check out Calypso! It will make you love yodeling! 😉 mama Cass Elliot is one of the two female singers in the group the mamas and the papas who sang several iconic songs from the 1960s like Monday Monday.
