I was lucky enough to work for a company whose CEO was personal friends with John, and for our work 'break up' Christmas party, he sang for us. He did an hour+ set comprising of all his classics, for about 100 people and despite his age at the time as this was only a few years ago, he performed an energetic set and his voice was still unbelievable. He made constant jokes about his age and how he couldn't do it like he used to and that he'd need us to "sing it for him" yet every note was perfect and the energy was amazing. Had a chat with him afterwards too as he stuck around for a few beers and chats with people. Absolutely ripping bloke, had time for everyone. If you didn't know who he was you'd just think he was a good bloke down the pub. Anyway, great reaction and great respect to the legend.

As a non-Aussie who heard Farnham for the first time back in the 80s, I was perplexed how this guy wasn't one of the biggest stars in the world. There is absolutely nothing he can't do vocally. The only reason I could come up with was that he was content in Australia and just chose not to go to America (where people want to see their singers as much as hear them). Despite all that, he still had great success in Europe. I think the fact that he's a great guy is the only reason he can get people to sing with him. It must be daunting.
@Raptormon1322 жыл бұрын
+Jacob Bradbury Well, sort of. His song "You're The Voice", for some reason, scored low on the USA music chats. And plus, he once said that he was offered to tour around the world, and be with the big names (Elton John, Rod Stewart, Stevie Wonder, ect), but turned it down, because he didn't want to be so long away from his family.

This is particularly poignant right now. I makes me think of Glen Wheatly, John's manager, who recently passed from Covid. That was kind of the relationship between them. Glen was definitely the wings beneath his wings that finally brought him the career he very much deserved, and the career that gave so much to Australia...

fransmith This is another instance where someone is wrongly said to have died of covid. The complications of covid is not dying of covid, he had been seriously ill for weeks before. In truth, hardly anyone dies of covid, they die, WITH covid. I saw the figures from Britain and the average age of, “covid deaths” was 86, the national life expectancy is 82! If an elderly person dies, this month instead of next month and has covid, they are listed as a covid death. It is a ridiculous situation, and has only made the perception of the general public worse.
@fransmith32552 жыл бұрын
@@xaj1543 Okay, well firstly you must have a lot of time on your hands replying to posts that are 8 months old, lol. Secondly, it depends upon whether he was actually dying of the other illnesses doesn't it? If he was going to die of the other illnesses anyway, then sure, I'd agree with you. If he was very ill, but likely to recover, than it is Covid that killed him. If a person would have continued to live if Covid hadn't come along, than it is, in fact, Covid that killed them. And that has nothing to do with how old they are.

John was covering Colleen Hewitt's version from 1982. The song was written for Kamahl, and he recorded it, but decided not to release it (one of those dumbest decisions of his career) so there were four others who recorded it, but it was the Hewitt version that charted in Australia. The following year Lou Rawls popularized it in the US and reached #65. Gladys Knight and the Pips also recorded it.

Re watching this reaction having watched the finding the voice documentary…. This was September/October 1986…. This would have to be the SAME WEEK Glenn Wheatley marched into the offices of 2Day FM in Sydney (cos they don’t live in Sydney so this would have been their only chance) and demanded the program manager listen to you’re the voice while John hid under the board room table, convinced of another rejection…. Because Cherie Romano liked the song so much, she then went and forced the on air talent to play the song and it starts appearing in the charts about 2 weeks later, hitting number 1 at the end of October following public demands/requests for stations to play the song

This is not a Bette Middler original, she was just another cover of this song. Kamahl, the Australian singer was first to record it in 1982, but then decided not to release it because he didn't think it fitted with his more country and western style, and so Roger Whittaker recorded it in the UK, Sheana Easton, the Scottish singer recorded it, and American Lee Greenwood also recorded it. It was Colleen Hewitt's Australian version recorded a few weeks later that most Australians are familiar with, however it was American Lou Rawls who first had chart success with the song in the US. Gladys Knight and the Pips recored it in 1983, and Gary Morris also recorded it around that time. Bette Middler covered it five years later in 1988. This version many people remember because it was used as the soundtrack for the movie Beaches. But when Farnham is covering it, he was covering the Colleen Hewitt version because Middler had not recorded it yet, (this Farnham version was two years before Bette Middler recorded her version) the song however was already an Aussie favorite long before Middler, all because of Colleen Hewitt's hit. Here is a 1983 performance of the song. I love this performance because Colleen actually cries as she sings the song, but like a trooper she hides her face but keeps singing without missing a beat.Her emotion makes this my favorite version of the song kzbin.info/www/bejne/mWnaqK2IidiLbdE
