Oh my stars, that was amazing & thank you for sharing this bit of history with us. Must say Farnsey’s version of this song is ten times better than Bette Midler’s. I never knew that JF sang this song but I absolutely love it. It’s amazing to think of what the future had in store for this wonderful man & his magnificent voice. I was living in the US during his second rise to stardom so missed all his interviews & concerts but have been (thanks to KZbin) strolling down memory lane, must admit I have replayed a number of the videos, so I thank all of the people who have been posting these videos 😁👍

Another bit of info for you mate... while we're on the subject of Bette Midler... John was offered 'From A Distance' before Bette was, but he passed on it because it had too much religous material in it... he said he tries to stay away from that side of things when it comes to music...
@fransmith32552 жыл бұрын
If you took out that "God is watching" thing, it could be a wonderful song...the kind that he might have been happy to sing, perhaps... Perhaps that wasn't a possible edit. He (or someone for him) did edit a few others in minor ways.
@alexs31872 жыл бұрын
I read that too. Interesting, because his rendition of Amazing Grace seemed to be very popular.
@fransmith32552 жыл бұрын
@@alexs3187 Amazing Grace, though certainly written as a religious song, is also sung as a popular secular song. From a Distance has that "God is watching" line. Although, outside that line, the meaning of the song is actually quite profound (and not specifically tied to religion), and I think John would probably have liked it without those religious lines. It's talking about how deceptive it can be looking at things from a distance (like politicians looking at the homeless for a blatant example), and more subtly, how very easy it is to misjudge people...from a distance since you don't, and can't possibly see, the full story or the detail about someone else in order to make any judgement. There are probably lots of other ideas you could consider where looking from a distance doesn't necessarily give the best information for judging. Without the "God" bit, John might have liked the main meaning. He certainly would have sung it well, although he would also sing the Swedish dictionary well... :-)) Bette Midler, although she had a very unique solo voice (I liked it), I wouldn't call it a technically wonderful voice like John's. And I was never convinced that she was the best singer for this song. I don't think the song really suited her, to be honest. I was in my mid teens when this came out and had previously loved "Beaches". I also remember being rather puzzled about her singing this song, but being too young to be able to explain my reservations, since I did very much like both the song and Bette Midler, but had reservations about whether it was 'good' in some way I couldn't define. This is kind of it. It never really suited her as a person, I think...
