John Fogerty - Buddy Holly Tribute Medley (1988 PBS). From my Sunday Night Hall of Fame Show tapes and my VHS Buddy Holly collection:
This video features a great performance by Creedence Clearwater frontman John Fogerty that was taped for the 1988 PBS special: “Buddy Holly and The Crickets - A Tribute”. Fogerty was in fine form on this show as he sings a medley of songs including Buddy's : “It’s So Easy” and “Rave On” sandwiched between Fogerty's take on the classic Ledbetter song "Cotton Fields".
Buddy Holly and the Crickets became one of my favorites in 1957 when I first heard “That’ll Be The Day” on my radio. I started writing, producing and hosting tributes to Buddy, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper as early as 1969 on WEEX - AM 1230 in Easton, Pa. That was the tenth anniversary of the plane crash and coincided with the Coral album release “Buddy Holly - Giant”. At first I called the special tribute show “Three Star Special”, as influenced by a 1959 hit song “The Three Stars” by Tommy Dee. After Don McLean’s dedication of “American Pie” to Buddy, I started calling the show “The Day the Music Died”. My tribute shows continued throughout my broadcast radio career in the Lehigh Valley, PA and Northwest New Jersey area. The last time my five-hour special aired was February 3, 1999 on WODE - Oldies 99.9.
To Recap: This video features a segment from the 1988 PBS special: “Buddy Holly and The Crickets - A Tribute”. The video and audio track have been restored from a VHS tape that I recorded off the air in 1988 as broadcast by WLVT-TV, PBS Channel 39 of the Lehigh Valley, PA.
The Sunday Night Hall of Fame Show was broadcast from 1980 to 1992 on WAEB - AM 790 and WKAP - AM 1320. My show returned between 1999 and August 2001 on WODE “ Oldies 99.9”. All stations were located in the Allentown - Bethlehem - Easton, PA area, AKA: The Lehigh Valley.

My and my young daughter just watched this and all I did was say stuff like "John Fogerty is one of the most talented people from California" and "This man made me cry with the way he played his guitar and sang - made a lot of people cry - tears of joy - so many times, I'm so grateful to him!"

Glad you enjoyed the video.. many don't realize that back then, and for over a decade, any appearance by John Fogerty was considered a rare treat, his performances were very few and very far apart.

Wow , just wow . I’m 46 , as a kid I watched the Buddy Holly Story with my Dad , and asked for a guitar asap . Never been the same since . I live in Texas , and stand by my proclamation that Charles Hardin Holley is the most important musician in Texas History .

That’s so cool that he inspired you to learn/play the guitar. I live in Tulsa, OK and one of our “native sons” actor Gary Busey, played and literally “became” Buddy Holly in that movie roll. I loved the movie and Buddy Holly too, have several books about him, he was so important in the history of rock and roll. I also love the TX musician-slide guitarist Johnny Winter. TX & OK sure produced some phenomenal musicians-songwriters, must be something magical in the water✨✨✨.

Omg 😳 how lucky were you? What do you “play?” So glad Waylon wasn’t on that plane “the day the music died”. Like a fool I didn’t care for country music as a teenager back when Waylon/Willie/Kristofferson/Skynyrd were touring summer of ‘77 “Outlaw Country”. My friends begged me to go darn it I missed out big time, love their music now. Tell us some stories we’d love to hear them! 😅

The Fog!! ‘Songs that became our hymns’ .. seemed that way to me! Though all of CCR stuff was written before I was born. Crazy. It’s like CCR songs have always existed or sound like they should of always been there. I guess that’s what makes a good song, when you feel it always existed. Thanks for this video. :)

Here's some cassettes I had when I was 10 (in 81) may be I was a fish out of water at the time, I don't know.....Buddy Holly, hits, Beach Boys hits, hits of Surf Music in the 80....of course I had Hank JR, Kenny Rodgers. I really didn't get into most of mainstream music, until high school. After high school stopped listening to main stream music again.
