It's sad because it's so many of us going through the same thing he is I can relate to John right now. Church There has always been a disconnect with me because I'm always judged and it's hard. My gang I was apart of they always treat me like family and don't judge me at all wen I come around but as soon as I come around The church I'm always under attack by them and have to hide wat I'm going through it's tough I feel like I don't belong.

John Givez is a phenomenal artist. The man knows music and can make music. It sounds like his mission is not to necessarily to bring people to Christ. He just wants to make dope music and express HIS life from HIS perspective. I know longer at this moment look to artist to articulate my faith or the gospel anymore. They don't want that expectation. So I simply go to people like Lecrae just to hear dope music that doesn't have derogatory content . I go to my church and look at folks like John Piper, Ravi and Matt Chandler for the gospel. My only chip is that it seems like every Christian artist who is making that transition to a more inspirational approach rather than the gospel is always bashing the church and never speaking on the good and better experiences they had with the church. Ultimately it paints a picture that the church is super divided. Which in a sense it is. BUT however I would love to see some more grace given to the church and more of a positive light shed upon us. I'd say KB did a great job with his sway interview. ✊🏾

why is authenticity (or "being real") always at the compromise of holiness? I love when rappers are authentic, and honoring the Lord with their words. its not too unreasonable to do both. its actually Biblical. I Love JG but this trend in CCH is concerning.

The way John speaks in this interview sounds a lot like how I feel within the Church. I feel like an outcast a lot of the time because the Church tends to have a certain look or a feel to it that just clashes with my bluntness. I applaud John for being himself, knowing God is working in his heart and he isn't perfect. I know that God is working in me in a similar way but it's very hard to be a Christian in that space. I feel a peace of where I'm going when I die but man this struggle on Earth has me crying and hurting most days. My dream for the work that God has put in my heart is to see the Church be more genuine or own up to failing. Because it's in that failing or falling short that shows the very need we have for a Savior. Us not being enough exalts Jesus. I think the temptation for John and myself is to become so frustrated by the lack of genuine Christianity and try to go "unfiltered" to passively call out the Church's hypocrisy. I want to find a way to approach this better but when you're the underdog and alone like Jeremiah, depression and loneliness take its toll. Maybe pastors need to be called out, maybe elders, idk but the way the Church operates needs to change because both of us aren't always living Biblically and that's what needs to be discussed and repented of. God give us grace cuz we (me too) need it so much!

I love John Givez sincerity and honesty. He's not we're he feels he should be with God and his faith and he doesn't wanna be fake about it, an that's real!! it doesn't mean he loves God any less or he's not Christian, but truth be told he'll be back Love you Bro, I'm glad I had chance to chop it up with you at flavor fest. You gave me great advice. I told you this is just the beginning for me with music and I'm loving it. I love that John Givez is being Transparent. I know that we must be the light to the world but some Christians feel or believe that we should hide our true feelings, beliefs and thoughts. And that's not the case. If we shouldn't be transparent then why would God put Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jacob, David, Joseph, Paul(Romans 7) and Peter(Galat. 2) failures in the bible that Generation after Generation would read. Now on the other hand I don't believe in making sin "ok" or "not so bad". But I love his transparency!!!

I'm 9 minuets into this video and listening to John. So far; I totally understand his observations of where the Church falls short. But in my opinion it doesn't make sense that instead of staying and becoming and helping us become a part of the solution he wants to leave the equation and further contribute to the problem (?).. unless there are other motives at play possibly unnoticed ones(?). So let me get this straight - rapper, singer, whatever we're all MINISTERS no matter what we do or how we do it. The goal should always be the same; lead people to encounters with our Heavenly Lover as He beautifies us - The Church. According to the Word, there is ONLY the world and there is the Church - believers and non-believers. As a rapper myself, I have a desire to reach people who are caught up in the type of lifestyle I was caught up in. For years I met people out in the streets, led them to Jesus and while all this was taking place in the back of my head I was suffering the fact that I wasn't aware of a Church family suitable for these people with these worldly backgrounds (keep it in mind they're supposed to become the Church and not like the world) not to mention some of them actually expressed how they felt about "church". I was able to get to where I was then and am now in my growth only because of Abba's grace and mercy. With all this said, with all due respect brother John Givez in my opinion you need to approach the situation differently because what about all the people you are supposed to be leading to Jesus across the nation or possibly on a global scale? Where will they go if WE don't work to try and get the Church to address the issues that will further contribute to the sin that so easily entangles? We all have a piece of the puzzle, we are all to do the work of an evangelist but if the hospital is broke down then where will we take the sick especially if there's no doctors??? All my opinion, and again, I understand John's perspective because I've gone through it since 2001 and sometimes still go through it, doesn't mean I'm going to take that bait. I will rejoice always and enjoy my God following His heart beat. I am happy to say that although my influence and or contributions for a better "church experience" hasn't been as successful as I'd hope by now on a larger scale or at least as far as I'm aware it hasn't, I am happy with the fact that at least one church family has been able to better grasp the genuine understanding of being the best them possible who they were created to be - like Christ, because of Jesus through my prayers and my time - my lifestyle. Shalom to you and your loved ones in Jesus name!!
@greg4397 жыл бұрын
Good points man, but let me throw another perspective out there though. The type of people john is reachin out to is exactly the kind of person I am. Someone who doesn't want to hear song after song of "I was down and God picked me up" kind of stuff all the time. If I'm struggling, I want to genuinely connect with someone going through the same thing as me. I want to embrace the human condition that John isn't glorifying, but is admitting to because we all relate on that. Tl;dr - some of us prefer authenticity over the "hero complex" John described in order to lead/be lead to Christ.
@StreetLife9257 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply and for your time. I understand what you mean, I've heard it a ton of times and I can relate. Still doesn't help get hospitals ready for doctors who will be ready ready for patients - the Church (here in the US at least). I believe that if I see a problem it is primarily because God designed me to be a part of the solution to that particular problem I see, not run from it. When I first got saved I was able to read into peoples lives very easy because I was seeking to help them. Months later I was overwhelmed. I learned that if Satan can't stp us he will push us. I decided to tell God I prefer to be blind so that when I did see something I knew for a fact it was Him showing me then it was a matter of simply asking Him what I should do with that revelation. Happened to me last night at Apple Bees. Couple came in, Holy Ghost opened my eyes, I saw, I asked if I should simply pray, enjoy and or deliver. We ended up staying an hour after they closed because I was prophesying and manifesting the kingdom of God to everyone present. John sees, or saw, now why leave? Understand? He could still make that music you need no problem. His decision can cause confusion among weak/new believers and possibly even contribute to division.
@tmo22137 жыл бұрын
Greg Steele so what you are saying is that if an artist is not using profanity or smoking weed in his music/videos then they cannot reach a certain people group? I understand that Givez has always been like this (from what I gather in this interview) but at what point does it show his remorse for his own sin? It is one thing to struggle with these things and in a causal conversation you slip up and curse or whatever. Or you slip up and give in to smoking weed on occasion. That is understandable cause in real life, we all have our struggles. But to put it "on wax" is calculated and to me that is an issue. Why not just rap about his struggles with these things without actually doing it in the song(s)? To me it seems like there is no remorse over sin. I actually respect Givez's artistic lyricism and vocals without the swearing. But now I have to wonder what his end goal for reaching the people who he his trying to reach? Hopefully it is to point them to Christ. If that is the case, then he shouldn't have to actually use certain words and visuals to reach them. Especially if they could be biblically offensive to a lot of brothers and sisters. At the end of the day though he is right, those of us that can't follow him on this path should get off the train now. I enjoyed his music before this and he still is an amazing lyricist regardless. Just not sure YET if I can continue.
@jamesnjonjo40927 жыл бұрын
Nowhere in the bible does it say people are supposed to become the church. That was propaganda perpetrated by the church in europe at the height of its power. And we are not called to "lead people to encounters with our Heavenly Lover as He beautifies us - The Church". The church is an organization. We are supposed to lead people to Jesus. Jesus is our Heavenly Lover not the church. Start up your own centers where people can talk to God, every weekend or weeknights like KB has a bible study session. Make sure the churches line up with the truth and not on-paper religion

Repentance is something I gotta deal with on a day to day basis so there's no way i can act as if perfection exist within me.. I am who I am, progressing while his spirit guides me..
@BrianGlaze7 жыл бұрын
I agree with what you are saying here, and I would like to add something. I get what you mean by "act as if perfection..", but I would suggest a different wording. The reason being that the Word does tell us we are declared holy and perfect by God. Our status before him is that. Now that does not translate to us doing everything perfectly in the present life, but that does not change our status before God. I hope this was helpful rather than confusing or discouraging. Once again I want to affirm that we can not "put on a front"/pretend that we have it together/present ourselves as perfect of our own merit. That is unhelpful.

Zoogie Michaels We are to judge those inside the body of Christ.(1 Cor. 5:12) But it has to be a Christlike judgement to leave enough room to encourage someone to keep growing in Christ. Real truth is you're either conforming to this world or Jesus, that's pretty much it. This is what happens when Christians don't read enough bible and they have too many opinions and in conclusion the Word of God is held to be questioned. We are to accurately handle the Word and let God interpret it to our spirits while trusting Him. When someone like JG is in a spectrum to reach an audience he will always be accountable to God first and second of all for true Christians to keep pointing him into the right direction which is God. I know there are people among the Christian audience that judge without removing the plank from their own eye, and condemn rather than to pray and instruct someone to follow Jesus. I enjoy JG and his gift of music and I Just pray he will get through this season holding unto Jesus His anchor for His soul. Because I am also a sinner who was saved by the blood and grace of Jesus Christ.

I remember hearing John on "Shalom" with J Han and I felt he had a struggle with what's next. My brother, I will keep you in my prayers as I do for any Christian that uses music to reach the lost. (I won't call you a Christian rapper). But just remember that when God turns that "Real Light" on us we cower away like the Children of Israel. I feel that the problem with most guys in Christian music is that most don't know the history of Christianity or the history of what being real and being persecuted is. You're going to be scorned and you won't fit it. You are called to be different; I don't remember Jesus fitting in with anyone. Jesus never compromised either, He wept, He hung with the lost and He laughed with children. The fact of being real is an overused term because everyone could be real. God turns us to look at the "real self" everyday. It's an everyday struggle of dying and not including "I" but turning more to "Him". God sees your heart but God also wants all of us to be an example to a dying world. God would rather you come out and perform for a crowd of 2 people instead of you compromising to a crowd of 2 million. I'm not bashing but I want all of us, me included, to see the beauty in this world and what we think is amazing; just think of what God has in store for us if we're faithful to Him. Much love.

I don't want him gone, but I do understand why he thought it was best for him to leave Christian Hip-hop. His very motives and intentions were on the cross roads. When it comes to "religious" Christianity it isn't just good and glorious as we want it to be - especially in US. If he was trying to get young people to go back into the house of the Lord and yet he, himself was having issues with what is going on in church - why would he continue to direct them there? That can cause a lot of uncertainty and conflicting thoughts. Personally - I got to know God better out of church than in church. So now when I am in church, I am not there to imitate nor trying to follow someone - I follow Christ! I do what God tells me to do. So personally I will send John all my love and he is in my prayers always - I pray for his success and that his success glorify God one way or another (for it is written - It all works together for good for those who love the Lord)! I'll pray that his heart don't delight in sin and that he continue to put Almighty as the leader and the guider of his life! Let it be!

It speaks volumes of your character if you can't wrap your mind around the approach John Givez is taking. The Word of the Lord still remains. Humans are still inherently evil. I know John sins, I know I sin, I know you sin. We've been using Christian artists as scapegoats, as offerings. We've acted like listening to these people somehow makes us better than all the other people of the world, and working to keep their public behavior as clean as possible in order to continue our facade of conversion. Nothing has changed. We're still twisted, demented, and prevented. Christian or not.

From what I've been reading in the comments I can say that theirs a lot of truth of course we can all agree that john made a decision that he had to make on his own and we can see that he's most defiantly in a place were their aren't many deep genuine motivation in his life . He basically figuring things out on his own through Christ ; for example their is a big difference between someone who truly has a circle people who are devoting their life to Christ and some one who is doing it alone. I myself have only have four people that Christ placed in my life so I won't drift off and make dumb decisions but john really sounds like he is doing it alone and from what it sounds like as he starts to get older he will be very mature in Christ and he would look at his past decisions and be like " what was I thinking". Everything else right now is a process and it really is him on a walk God .

But, yes we're not all perfect. Still, I do feel the same with John givez feeling more comfortable meeting & socializing with nonbelieves because I'd be ecstatic to have the intent to love on them & share the gospel, be a light, share my hope if they're hurting. I've also had a lot of thoughts or complaints, where I do wanna' find real christians or christians who are really loving, nonconformed, or at least be with those really trying to seek God, to be transformed, to be godly, to be like Christ, which also includes holiness/righteousness. Rather than play church.... but yeeee #soapbox

Love John's music. It's always been inspiring to me. Just gotta be real though. To say you need people to get pass the curse words is like saying I need God to get over my sin without me repenting. Not comparing us to God but simply saying, we're all held to the same standard. We have to be a light to reach the world. Hope that's still the mission for you bro. Either way, I'm praying for you. But the issue is it seems like he's gotten caught up with the stuff he feels about people instead of just simply obeying the Bible. He doesn't see he can be a rapper and disciple. Cursing isn't the problem but his heart and mind are off right now : (

you can't belong to the church until you believe. 37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” 40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” 41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls. The Fellowship of the Believers 42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. Acts 2:37-47.

anyone that is sayin that he has to be a certain way to be good in Gods eyes are completely wrong...God knows this mans heart we as a people do not...hes making music thats for the soul based off of his life. Yall telling a man to be the Kirk Franklin of the Rap world...hes not talkin abput shooting this pimpin and all of that hes keeping it real....and thats the disconnest between the streets who need to be able to come to the church and feel ok with it not like an oddball. God says that we are to come as we are...not the way the church people wants us to be. Everyones relationship with God is different because its personal. Hes being something that alot of people arent and thats the type of person that connects to the church but at the same time be able to connect with those going through the struggle in the streets and celebrate God being in his life...and its a tough road because either way theres criticism.

He said believe before you are saved. I'm suggesting that we need to consider helping people be a part of our church communities even before they "believe." Let's invite them to come play basketball with us and not have strings attached to it and love on them and share the gospel as God opens their heart to it. Let's tear down walls with between us and the unsaved, not build them up.

"Keyboard warriors." John, you're not above criticism. When you bear the name "Christian" you're expected to bear it out in your life. I don't care if you smoke cigarettes, use the n-word, whatever. What I care about is that you may not understand the gospel. I am criticizing your beliefs, not you.

You talk like his project and goal is reaching people, and maybe he's saying it too, but where's the fruit? His new music isn't about reaching people, he might give a shout out to God but it's not fruit from God. I'm not seeing it. It's compromising. If you aren't reaching people with the GOSPEL, you aren't reaching them at all. If you carve your own path, you are getting people to follow YOU, not GOD.

Justin Naylor you obviously haven't been listening to the interview. The music John is making is a relfection of his PERSONAL relationship with God, and when people can relate to that, they can start to build from their. Like in the interview, someone said that John Givez is the rapper they can relate to the most, and another guys said that John's music makes him proud to to be a black male in America. Don't just come here to judge. Listen to what he's saying.
@romariosmith4227 жыл бұрын
Justin Naylor I agree
@revelasti81707 жыл бұрын
Relating to his music or making someone proud to be black has nothing to do with the gospel. And I've listened to his MUSIC, the interview is irrelevant. It doesn't sound like someone living in victory by the gospel. The same argument has been used by NF, he feels encouraged by all the people that "relate" to his music, but he's just rapping about himself. He's not leading people anywhere. That's not what someone who's life is ABOUT THE GOSPEL should sound like. Go listen to Trip Lee, who also raps about his life, and you will hear a major difference. There's many more rappers who very clearly rap about a life centered on the Gospel. There's also a lot of young rappers who think it doesn't have to be all about the gospel, and they are wrong.
@romariosmith4227 жыл бұрын
Justin Naylor true! People are blind these days man. If he John is someone who truly struggling then in his music he was give examples of himself making a change. Inl literally cant find substances in his music.
@Howardsanders37 жыл бұрын
different situation though, Trip Lee is in a much mature stage in walk with Christ, John is still growing. Give him time. Honestly, I've witnessed more people seek God through hearing Chance the Rapper talk about him than Trip Lee and Lecrae recently, simply because the message is authentic and open about his current situation, John is truly authentic, and this is just where he is in his life right now. Trust the process.

Oh one last thing he says he has to be real. So if he has to work for someone he's going to go on the job cursing??? No he's going to save that for his private life. Does that make him less real?? Nope

What about Christ? Are you a theist (someone who believes in God) or are you a Christian (someone who has received the gospel and walking in the light? 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe-and shudder! 20 Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? Jas 2:19-20 6 whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked. 1 Jn 2:6.

Man i like John, dudes got skill but he slipping. I think a lot of CHH is slipping lately. They keep talking about about how they want to talk about their own walk and how they feel limited by CHH but so rarerly now you get the "but then i met Christ" part of their walk in their music. Im all for you showing where you came from and where you are. Its relate-able and thats what makes him such a great artist but dont see the redemption there. Its like the dude is struggling to come to terms with who God really is and is really just deciding that hes going to do it through his own strength and if God wants in, then he knows where to find him. Want to hear one of the best to ever touch a mic get real? Go listen to Hopsin Ill Mind of Hopsin 7. Its as real and gritty as it gets and thank goodness for Lecrae for reaching out to him but John already knows Christ and hes ending up back at where Hopsin is at now. He slipping from victory into the seat of doubt. No where in the bible does it say being a Christian would be easy, its a life transformation, it isnt supposed to be easy, take up your cross homie, you're not supposed to be like everyone else. But congrats, you're getting there now. Just another guy rapping about where hes been with no redemption or true solution in the lyrics. "Heart of El Shadai pumps in my chest but the mind of Al Capone when im alone walking home from the liquor store is all i know" You slipping man, you slipping.
