AA was inspired (originally) by Frank Buchman (I know Bob and Bill had a lot to do with it)......but Frank would be a good study, a man who evolved from severe to gifted......he even sat down with Heinrich Himmler in 1936 and tried to convince him to avoid war (on 6 occasions)....Frank was a part of the Oxford group (a nick name), so inspiring for the Gospel that even Hilter studied how he could draw a crowd and wanted to find out why

“I wasn’t battling it that hard at the time”. lol My father was considered an AA guru by those in ‘the club’. 25+ years sober, a sponsor more than once, helped people who were truly down and out get back on their feet. Presumably considered to have completed the vaunted 12-steps. But he never once talked to my brothers and I about how his drinking affected us. He never offered even the most simple of apologies to my mother, for his behaviour during their marriage (which ended primarily due to his drinking), which would have meant so much to her. Yet he’d go to the ends of the Earth for his AA buddies. He died sober, but completely estranged from 2 of his 3 sons, and left my mother bitter and angry for the remainder of her life. He was the quintessential alcoholic; made his family strangers, and strangers family. Hopefully Mr. Goodman does better by his family.

Alcoholism and smoking are two VERY unhealthy habits that are the most difficult to quit. And also the hardest to remain vigilant against because it's SO easy to backslide. Heroin is up there too (never did that thank god), but because it's illegal is more difficult to obtain. Meanwhile you can walk into any 7-11 24 hours a day and pick up smokes and alcohol. I quit smoking after 40 years about 5 years ago and everyday is still a struggle against picking it up again. Mostly because I never hit that wall where I didn't enjoy it. I stopped because I knew (and if I'm honest knew for a long time) that eventually it was going to make my last years shorter and more painful. If you smoke, quit or find some way to get the support you need to quit. If you're an alcoholic, it's not just your life you put in jeopardy, but those who are on the road when you drive drunk. Or hurting family members who have to watch as you attack them Same with drugs, whatever problems you face, they won't go away with whatever you self medicate with.
