I’d almost forgotten how sensible a true leader could be. It took a few years for Mr Howard to gather steam...but to hear his sensibility, is so refreshing... even for an old codger. Thank you.

Gun laws, dependence on China, rampant immigration, spiralling housing costs, the collapse of manufacturing, sacrificed at the altar of golbalism are what come to my mind of his legacy. Apart from that he was a stellar P.M.

At one time I might have agreed with John Howard about Australians not like being told what to do, but as a Victorian under Dictator Dan, I am shocked at how compliant everyone is and how much they defend Daniel Andrews tactics or just can't see through them, even to the point of being angry at someone who disagrees.

I came to Australia in 1997 and initially not very impressed by the appearance of John Howard😀but over time, I was fully convinced by his leadership and wisdom...I could only wish one thing that he could have done better---i.e., left the primary minister role to Peter instead of hanging on the power until he was defeated...

I'm sure he regrets his decision to hold on for too long, because yes, it was the wrong decision. And yes, if he'd handed over in early 2007 they probably would have retained power, but coulda/woulda/shoulda. No point wondering about it any more.

He was a great leader. He certainly went against the tide, we in the UK had New Labour who spent money like a drunken sailor, the state massively expanded, immigration went unchecked. Fortunately for them their incompetence was hidden by a housing bubble and credit boom that filled the coffers but when the inevitable bust came we were left totally exposed, and Labour conveniently scapegoated the 'Bankers'. Truth is we have never recovered from that disastrous period economically or societally and probably won't. Had we had someone like Howard in charge I am certain we would be in a much better place.
@nicolaiitchenko76103 жыл бұрын
What are the views of yourself, Mr. Anderson, and perhaps several of your recent Australian guests - especially Mr. Howard, to issues like the Bradfield water for Queensland (and the agricultural assistance to the rest of the country that this would bring) and more interestingly, the suggested plan to build two major steel producing plants one on each northern coast, with a rail corridor feeding iron ore one way and coal the other? Would these be viable and - more importantly - could the government bodies get out of the way enough to allow private enterprise to create these schemes? Finally - with all evidence now becoming clear - do you believe that there will be a time 'post covid' when we see governments in some places in Australia, taking more advantage of this crisis than the freedoms we enjoyed in the time of Mr. Howard should allow?

The issue with the French submarines wasn't just that they were contracting on a submarine design that had yet to be built in France ... it was also that they were basing it on an original French nuclear design but asking the French to transpose that to an diesel-electric design for Australia. So in effect - a completely different submarine.

Note the tendency of both speakers to frame topics like 'our oil', 'our income', 'our exports', 'our resources' etc in nationalist-collective terms. This is collectivism with a disregard for private property- its in name only. You own nothing unless the group, the nation, gives you approval to own it, to trade it, to make a profit on it or to dispose of it. They view the nation state as primary. Then they both uturn and pay lip service to the advantages of individual liberty and freedoms. A bet both ways.

Two things, the population at large does not has not and in my estimation will not agree that immigration is a good thing. GDP per capita has been falling for some time, congestion and overcrowding not to mention dilution of Australian culture and values, it takes time absorb an immigrant and localise them, the rate at which they are/were brought it far exceeds the countries ability to fully digest them. Secondly, inflation is non existent? Honestly? Measure it properly along with unemployment then have the debate, I think you would find from any credible pollster that for many years now the general consensus is living standards are falling and those at the bottom disproportionately feel it the most.
