Mr Lennox mentions CS Lewis in connection with science and faith, (rather than science versus faith). Lewis mentions a moment in time when ‘the mind became more capable of abstraction and analysis.’ The age of science began then. Logic and reason, given pride of place in the scientific project, rejoice at what they find in the Kingdom of Heaven but they are not the means of entry. The task of thinkers like Jordan Peterson and others including (gasp!) French philosophers, is to indicate how and where the key to the Kingdom is to be found, and then logic and reason come into their inheritance - with ‘an angel’s reach of thought’ to use John Henry Newman’s phrase, the human mind enters, and reflects upon, realms and realities hitherto closed to it. Food for real thought, at last!

I haven’t come across the expression ‘hyper-reality’ before, but it strikes me that if strict adherence to the rules of reason and logic (rationalism) constitute a prison for the mind, then hyper-rationalism is a high-security prison. The capacity of faith to release us from such a restricted life is placed before the believer in Scripture: ‘Peter, bound with two chains, was sleeping between two soldiers, while guards in front of the door were keeping watch over the prison. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and said to Peter, “Get up quickly.” And the chains fell off his wrists. The angel said to him,” Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.” Peter went out and followed him.’ (Acts of the Apostles Ch. 12) ‘bound with two chains.’ The two chains are time and space. ‘between two soldiers.’ The two soldiers are logic and reason when promoted above their station to a rank they do not merit. ‘guards in front of the door… keeping watch,’ These guards stand sentinel over the human heart, determined to prevent the word of God from taking root there. They are myths, legends, superstitions, Old Wives tales, philosophies, the fashionable opinions of every Age, the isms ( among them rationalism) and issues that colonise the minds of so many in our time. All of these constitute the Labyrinth of Greek mythology. Well, faith is not exactly everyone’s cup of tea these days, I get that, but it is mine. As has been pointed out, it, (faith) is ‘ wholly supernatural and its exercise leads us into the supernatural order.’ I like it there, I like what I find there, and I take great delight in listening to the conversation of those who speak out of lived experience of that order. Podcasts such as John Anderson’s constitute the Samizdat of our time.

Well said. People really do underestimate the influence of Greek philosophy on New Testament Christianity in particular. Tom Holland, of all people, should be more alert to that possibility. Stoicism flourishes in Christian teachings and the Cynics to some extent.

Atheism or materialism is false as so far it has a little knowledge of the elemental world and based on that it extrapolates the elemental to be the nature and sum total of reality. There is the hard problem of consciousness for philosophy, and mind? Is it elemental emerging with quantum events? Atheists are basing their theory on limited information. Usually in science the method is not to be dogmatic about anything but atheists are not following that play book. The definition of religion is; that to which we are bound; it is the nature of reality and all there is. Consciousness; Mind; elements have been named God. I don't believe that Christ was an actual invention. He may have actually existed. However, people's willingness to believe that a man named Christ was some sort of magical messenger, and the manipulated stories which were spread regarding his life, are what caused the propagation of the Christian sect. '2084' is a very good book and Lennox is much better when he talks about his own brilliant books instead of just repeating the C.S. Lewis apologisms ad nauseum. The last ten minutes is a pretty good discussion, at least. Generally, I don't think Lewis is even close to Hume's level and I still don't get his point about the laws.

@@harlowcj No, I don't accept that argument at all; that is another one I still don't get even after watching many interviews with Professor Lennox. I respect Hume's practical approach to miracles, whereas many times it feels to me that Lewis is just making an argument that sounds good to justify a latterly gained Christian faith, which at times seems a bit too contingent.

@@harlowcj It's a while since I read any Hume, but although I love philosophy I don't like to discuss through other people's words, I would rather know that you think. I don't believe it is a disteleological Universe though. I haven't seen that word - 'disteleological' before, but it's a good one. I believe, somewhat along the lines of William Lane Craig, that God is a mind...or consciousness. Therefore, there is no disconnect between what we think of as good, true, beautiful, evil etc. and what God thinks.

My opinion is that you cannot justify things like rationality or logic without the nature of reality itself being rational and logical. Some call it a presuppositional argument. It seems a bit silly to call that an argument for God in and of itself, but it's on the shoulders of those who wish to dismiss God to provide a different justification. But it doesn't sound like that's a problem for you. I would reject Hume's argument for miracles, because it assumes that no rational being formulated and sparked what we call natural laws into existence. And if a rational being is powerful enough to create a universe, that being certainly is powerful enough to introduce events to that universe that are "extra" from these natural laws if it so desires.

I know a lot of wealthy people who are generally quite happy and I have known others who have devoted their lives for others and they seemed to me to be quite unhappy. The meaning of life is different for everyone. A materialistic world doesn't determine your happiness.

Indeed. The purely science-fixated, materialistic viewpoint does not really yield much explanatory power to phenomena outside the boundaries of science, yet many people blinded by their apparent intellectual prowess tend to become prisoners of their own rationality and fail to see that the mechanistic description of the world is unable to capture the meaning and purpose of experiences that are profound and self-evident to any human consciousness but impossible to describe within a scientific framework, except for some vague explanations of brain chemistry or such which ironically in the end amount to similar explanatory power as saying it's "magic". To add to the irony, we humans are not even as rational as we would like to think, as a lot of our decisions and viewpoints are heavily influenced by our personal history and interrelated emotional context. This effect can be also seen in many an atheist who seem to possess irrationally "holy" hatred towards any non-materialistic interpretations of the world.

Well, apparently despite being almighty and all (and thus all-knowing), he didn't foresee (or took for granted) that the pinnacle of his creation could and would do things he didn't want them to do, but rather than preventing it from happening and going for a root cause solution, he sacrificed himself to himself on a Roman torture device, got revived by himself (thereby essentially becoming a zombie), as that somehow retroactively fixes this design flaw (but only if you believe in it). They are the base of the totality and permeate at every level. They are inescapable because any attempt to deny them requires their use in the act of the denial. The axioms are: existence, consciousness, and identity which is the form existence takes. The problem with belief in god lies in the contradiction that consciousness is conscious prior to existence. Since god by definition is the creator of everything then his awareness precedes an existence of anything to be conscious of. If nothing exists then there is nothing to be conscious of. A consciousness conscious of nothing isn’t conscious and is impotent to create a universe. I have found no way to resolve this contradiction short of evading it or abandoning it.

When you use reason to read the bible ( which one by the way because there are different bibles for different Christian faiths?), you read it as a historical document written and edited, then selected, assembled and ordered by different people at different times in specific historical circumstances with different ideologies and theologies, with crucial borrowings from Egyptian, Phoenician, Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian and Hellenistic religions and cultures. It is strange that a scientist should consider this book that comes in different versions as anything other than a historical artefact. When it comes to Christianity itself, obviously their understanding of what this all means has also evolved over time so why one would you choose?

Intelligent design is a false doctrine. Adam is is Jesus´ literal genealogy in Luke 3, and Enoch was literally the seventh from Adam; therefore Adam was literally the first man created. We are given many overlapping genealogies in the Bible, and can make a timeline that shows that Adam lived about 6000 years ago. The gap theory is also false, because Jesus said in Matthew 19:4-5 that God created Adam “at the beginning”, and in the creation account those words only occur in connection with the heaven and the earth; so day six was also at the beginning, and the beginning had to be a short time space, that is six literal days. Be a Bible believer, and honour God, lest you be a false teacher leaving folk suspended between the devil´s Darwin and God. I don´t give a thripence for any professor, unless he speak the words of God.
