Rod Liddle was a bloody good editor. I have listened to the Today Show since I was a teenager and it used to be an excellent show . Now John Humphrys has left it will never be the same . They used to have real battle hardened journalists on the show, people with character and distinctive voices. Now they all sound the same. Because fundamentally they are all the same. It was the same with the News Quiz whose format was ripped off for HIGNFY on TV. In it's early days the panel was made up of real journalists, cynical, funny and sometimes far from sober. Now it's full of "comedians" that no-one outside the M25 has even heard of and are just not funny - by any standards. It's so sad - I have been a Radio 4 listener virtually all my life, now I can scarcely be bothered with it.

I can accurately sum up how the BBC works. On the day that Cameron made his "I will give you a referendum" announcement, I made a written prediction to all my friends and family, that as from tomorrow morning, the "Calais migrant crises" would suddenly, and mysteriously, disappear from our screens completely, (even though it had shoved the "guilt" trip and "racist" trip at the viewer for the last 3 months.) Peter Sissons said the same thing too - after he left, and was told he was mistaken by the BBC. The rot was already there in 1997 when Radio 4 and 5 presenter Jane Garvey let slip on air that when she came to work at Broadcasting House she had to pick her way over the champagne bottles strewn over the floors of the corridors on the morning after the Blair landslide. Once in power New Labour ended the convention of selecting a BBC Director Governor and a Commissioner with different political views. Just like they ended the convention of choosing Speakers for the House of Commons from alternating parties. There were articles in the Guardian after Humphries left arguing he had betrayed the BBC after his retirement and should have been got rid of before as he had previously been suspected of harbouring “right wing” views. (ie non liberal)- which of course count as unacceptable thought crimes. They are so trapped in their own reflection I wonder how many now really believe they are not bias and how many keep their gobs shut while they pick up their enormous salaries.

*In their defence The BBC produces absolutely wonderful programs, War & Peace, Poldark, Peaky Blinders, Line of Duty, Call The Midwife, Planet Earth, The Night Manager, Strictly Dancing, Doctor Foster, Gentleman Jack, Happy Valley, the list is endless. I consider my modest licence fee money well spent and for less than £3 a week terrific value compared to 'commercial channels' where you are subject to at least 15 minutes every hour of advertising chair Lifts etc. In France there is an annual TV licence, which, last year, was 116 euros - approx £92. This comes with the taxe d'habitation, which is a local community tax. For many years TV shops have had to inform the government of the name and address of anyone who buys a TV set. The programs are pretty dire! This will soon happen in the UK as many tightfisted cheapskates endeavour to cheat the system - I do not believe ANYONE who states they do not watch the BBC - total rubbish, however I do agree that their 'Political Reporting' is leaning to to the far left, and biased. Watch Sky News Australia for what I consider to be balanced and accurate reporting. In Germany, there is not only a TV license fee, but a **_Radio Fee_** as well for those traditionalists who do not own a TV set. Ordinary TV consumers have the radio fee included in their TV fee.*

The Telegraph web site is very biased to the right. The Guardian’s is to the far left. The Indie is on the softer left. The Daily Mail’s is on the hard right. R4 is at times achingly right on, and yet which other radio station provides intelligent conversation and sitcoms? I'm out of Blighty for more than 15 years now, but Humphrys and Naughtie were part of a rolling 'vote Labour' campaign. In the end I sought 'political asylum' with Nicky Campbell on R5Live. From what I've seen of him in my years away he does seem to have developed more objectivity, but during the Thatcher years and Major and he was an utter disgrace. Let's remember, if they had a Tory Cabinet Minister on, he had to be interviewed with his Shadow. As soon as Blair got in, we were in a 'new era of politics' and that changed. Don't pretend your mate wasn't utterly biased or the TODAY programme wasn't.
