The point is for a long time we've shared history together, and yet the latin perspective is lost and forgotten. We aren't mentioned at all. The black community is consistently spoken of and fought for when it comes to social issues. While the civil rights movement was progressing, J. Edgar Hoover didn't just put FBI surveillance on leaders in the black community; He did it to leaders of Civil movements in Puerto Rico as well, with what became known as Las Carpetas, or "The Files". Before Malcolm X even went to prison and starting walking the way of Elijah Mohammed, we had Pedro Albizu Campos. Who both walked the same paths and paid consequences for wanting the liberation of their people. It's not odd that we resonate with the "plight of the black community" because we too have been fighting to be seen and heard. To assert the notion that we've somehow stolen another communities history is to ignore the fact that we've been here living it and continue to live it.

That’s why they still don’t have the representation in certain areas like blacks do particularly media. Latinos and Asians are seeing tremendous growth in representation in Hollywood and US entertainment/media. Latin and Asian culture is also becoming much more popular in the US. The irony of the lede is that John has repeatedly stated that latins are the only ethnic group to have fought in every war this country has been in. That repeated statement erased African American contributions to this country by being ignorant of the well known fact that not only did we fight in every war this country has ever had, but also the fact that we fought in EVERY one of the wars BEFORE and after this country was a nation. A cursory Google search would easily enlighten anyone who wasn't trying to be ignorant (or trying to start a fight) to that fact. To the latins I would say, don't try to elevate yourselves by stepping on our heads trying to get wherever you're going- we're both coming up!. Other than that, I really enjoyed the information.

At some point, Leguizamo and the Latinx community need to start acknowledging that their Spanish and Portugese ancestors were just as responsible for the elimination of indigenous populations and cultures in the western hemisphere as the rest of the European invaders. Just as responsible for the enslavement of Africans in the Caribbean, Cuba, and elsewhere. Just as responsible for Catholic indoctrination of entire populations, including inquisitions. Using native slave labor to build missions up and down the California Coast. This is also a deep part of their history and they need to be just as open about these atrocities as they are proud of the rich cultures that were born from them. There is definitely a caste system in countries like Mexico where people of purer Spanish ancestry are held in higher regard than those who have Indigenous blood.

I disagree. "The building of America" happened in more sections of time than just that of chattel slavery, and in more locations. The south west part of the country, for example, wasn't even part of the US during the times of slavery and involuntary servitude, and was primarily populated by Indigenous and Latin peoples. Those populations were a cheap and easily exploitable workforce when the US added new states to the union, alongside the exploitation of Chinese immigrants, particularly with respect to the building of the railroads. The US as a whole has been "built" by many different exploited groups, frequently uncredited and unremembered for their contributions. The ancestors of many of today's Black Americans, along with those of many Native peoples, were the only ones held in bondage, that's definitely true, but it doesn't mean that they were the only ones who helped to build the country as it is now. And Latines also fight against injustice now, right alongside and in solidarity with all others who want a free and equitable society. Don't forget that a whole lot of people with Latin heritage are also Native, or Black; it's not just those like Leguizamo who could pass for white if they wanted to. It's easier to fight injustice and oppression when we're not fighting each other at the same time. Seek equality in freedom, not in oppression, as the saying goes. (NB: I am white, but marginalized in other ways, and married to a Cuban, so I think about this a lot.)

Do not be VAGUE. What the Chinese has done for this country will never scratch the surface of how black Americans laid the foundation of America. Black American slavery was responsible for a substantial share of the capital, iron, and manufactured goods that laid the foundation for American economic growth. We (Black Americans) gave America the backbone it needed, NOT LATINOS!

@@TheDavisfreak First, I did name specific groups (Indigenous peoples, Latines, Chinese), though not all. Second, I don't accept homework from random internet commentors. If you wish to know more about how and when and the various ways different oppressed groups of people have contributed to the building of the country, I gave you enough of a starting point to find the information on your own. If you don't want to leave KZbin, PBS Origins is a good place to start. Third, I am not and did not suggest that any of the oppression that other groups have faced was equivalent to the horrors of chattel slavery. Nor am I suggesting that Black people did not contribute significantly to formation and growth of the country through their forced and uncompensated labor, because that would be ludicrous. I am saying that Black slavery was not the *singular* contributor to the foundations of the country across the entire course of its history, as the country grew and expanded. It does not take away from contributions, willing or not, that Black Americans have made to the country throughout its history to also acknowledge that, in other times and places in the country, other groups have made significant and foundational contributions as well.

The problem with the term "Latin" is that it is too broad to be descriptive and meaningful. It literally includes all Latin groups including those who were colonized by Latin groups (Spaniards, Portuguese, Italians, South Americans, Mexicans, Central Americans, much or the Caribbean, etc.) . So a lot of people are moving away from this term to use terms that are more meaningful and specific, like Afro-Latin, Indigenous-Latin, Afro Latin Caribbean because language, race, ethnicity, location isn't connoted from the use of the term "Latin."

But within these counties there are groups of indigenous people as well who retained their native languages.

We are an economic machine, we are the backbone (essential workers) of this country and the economy. We need more representation in politics, in Hollywood and the media I've been saying this for the last 20 years, this is a step in that direction. Pero falta mas, mucho mas!

The amount of nonsense that came out this man (columbian immigrant) his mouth is astounding. The oldest ethnic group? Is he referring to Spaniards as Latinos? What is he saying? smh If Latino culture was at the foundation of North America why is it not visible all throughout American history, as we do see with Black American culture, in food, music, political revolution etc…. This man is all over the place and he’s only consistent with his inconsistency. The problem with John Leguizamo’s teaching is that most Latinos aren’t a direct descendant of the small group of Latin people in the 13 colonies, or even up to the ‘60s. In fact the vast majority of Latinos recent immigrants from Latin American countries who came after the ‘90s-early 2000s. They have little to do with the small group of people who were the North of America. Racist laws were based on the Black proximity. I do wonder how John Leguizamo is explaining the 13th, 14th and 15th amendment? And what exactly was built by Latinos in the 13 colonies pre and post antebellum? Statistically 95% of current day Latinos has nothing do with the history of America, as far as who has built America. “Latinx migrations 1850-2017 Latin Americans have lived in what is now the United States since the 16th century. In the early 1800s, when the United States annexed Florida, Louisiana, and the northern half of Mexico, more than 100,000 Spanish-speaking residents became US citizens. The 1850 US census, taken shortly after the conquest of Mexico, counted more than 80,000 former Mexicans, 2,000 Cubans and Puerto Ricans, and another 20,000 people from Central and South America. Today the descendants of those 1850 citizens are part of a Latinx American population that has grown enormously. As of 2017, more than 58 million Americans claimed Latin American heritage.” (Source: University of Washington, James Gregory) Simply put John Leguizamo is pro-Latino. And many are with him to do for self. “Imperial rivalries and the emergence of the United States of America would carve away this huge empire. By the mid-1800s most of the Spanish lands in North America were gone, now occupied as states and territories of the United States. But a Hispanic population remained, most notably in the Southeast and the Southwest, and these citizens were drawn into the conflict that swept the nation in 1861.” (Source: National Park Service) New Mexico etc at the time was Spanish territory. “United States Recognition of Mexican Independence, 1822. Previously, Mexico was under Spanish sovereignty. This changed when Napoleon Bonaparte led the French invasion of Spain in 1808, which provided Latin Americans an opening to fight for independence from Spanish colonial rule.” (Source: Gov).
