This is the clearest explanation of what's going on here in Los Angeles that I've ever heard, and I've been here for 20 years now. If you don't live here, there's no way to really understand what's happening. I moved out of Miami in 1993 because of Hurricane Andrew in '92. Lawrence is absolutely right this is like a hurricane but you can't see it coming on satellite images, it's just explodes in walls of fire. But all Angelinos know when the Santa Ana winds are forecast in the middle of a drought, somebody's going to lose their house. Even when they're only 30-40 miles an hour, things burn. No way to stop it. I love LA and I have no plans to live anywhere else, but back in '92 when that Florida hurricane hit, I had to face the fact that the things we have in our life are not permanent, we're just borrowing them until they go away for whatever reason.

Perfectly, painfully put. This is the sober, compassionate way to talk about devastation. And of course, it is Lawrence who brought it to us. We are all one disaster away from the unthinkable, and at times like this only a fool talks about real estate values and whose fault it is. The conditions firefighters and first responders are working in makes them all heroes by any definition. Thank you 🙏🏻

An extremely hot, dry summer with the Santa Ana winds is all anyone should need to know. The amount of politicizing these fires is beyond insane. If people are so desperate to blame someone, they will have to blame God. To all those who want to point at poor forest management. I don't think there are poorly managed forests in LA. I live in Northern California and we had the third largest fire in CA history this summer. Due to high winds early in the spring the normal controlled burns would have been unsafe. I'm not saying there isn't room for improvement but I am saying right now the people of LA need our support. I don't care how rich some of them are loss is loss. I just had to get this off my chest because I am appalled by the hatred being expressed in regards to this incredible tragedy. The California firefighters and first responders are the bravest men and women alive and we owe them are very lives!!!

Dear Lawrence O'Donnell, thank you very much for giving us the facts to understand this tragedy. It is very upsetting to hear the individuals who are using it to generate more hate and divisive political arguments for their own gain. Wind is not something you can hold in your hands, I have had my own harsh experiences with Hurricanes and there is nothing nobody can humanly do to stop the winds. Please know that many of us are praying for you, and for the wellbeing of all the people and animals who are suffering in California because of the fires. Please keep us informed during these difficult times. Thank you very much for your great reporting 💖
@gregking79265 сағат бұрын
What most people don't understand ( including the orange buffoon)but we firefighters do is the wind drives the heat far out in front of the flames themselves. It pre heats everything to ignition point before the flames even gets there to ignite buildings , grass, brush ect. If you doubt it, turn on your oven, let it heat up and then open the door to it. The heat will blast out and you can get a SMALL idea what it's like when a firestorm happens and that is what IS happening in California. The Sant Ana's exacerbate the problem a wildfire creates. Wildfires can create their own weather pushing the flame fronts and then add in hurricane force Sant Ana winds, you get a disaster in the making.

Just talked to some of the firefighters that worked on the Eaton Canyon fire while I was picking up some groceries. The fire is kind of under control and they are taking a break after about 36 hours of work. They were from out of town. They said that given the size of the fire even another few hundred firefighters would not have made much difference. During a normal building fire at least one truck is involved and it takes hours to get the fire under control. During this event there were hundreds of building fires. The lack of water was not an issue of water in the reservoirs but the total demand and how much could get through the pipes to all the open fire hydrants The water mains are only so large and are not designed for this high a demand. No city would pay for water mains that large. More water from elsewhere would not have prevented this fire nor helped put it out with out MAJOR changes in the city infrastructure. Everything is incredibly dry. I've been keeping track of the rain in Pasadena and there has been no rain since about April. Things can be done. Buildings that are more fire resistant. Remove of much of the green growing things in the city, cut down all the trees. However one of the causes is a warming climate. This is our fault. To the people that say that we are not responsible for the changes in climate I invite you to take some atmospheric physics class. Heck just take some physics class. It takes real work to develop a true understanding this and you won't get it from the internet.
@charlie26405 сағат бұрын
I'll add that I live in Pasadena, just outside the mandatory evacuation zone. I know several people that have lost their home. I know a lucky few whose homes were spared. It's been a stressful few days and it's not over yet.
