Let’s not forget that Prof John Lennox is a Mathematician first. Christian apologetics is technically not even his specialist subject - and yet he remains at the top of the pile of contemporary Christian thinkers, apologists and writers! Incredible mind. As others have said already, it is a privilege to be alive at the same time as Prof Lennox. Thank you for this show, everyone.

I love Prof. Lennox ♡, great conversation as usual. As a former agnostic born and raised in a former communist Soviet Union and brainwashed there by, first, atheistic teachers at a primary school and then, by atheistic professors at a university, I love listening to such podcasts. God is good all the time; we should remember the human purpose on this earth is not to achieve happiness, but to reconcile with our Creator. Blessings to all!

Was God also good when he allowed for slavery and the beatings to death of slaves? Or what about the blackmailing going on where people go to hell when they don’t accept God. Sounds like a tyrant to me.

@Jerrold Hewson nonsense. You have faith that your bank won’t steal from you when you give them money (presuming you have an account 🙂). You also have faith in a chair when you sit down in it, that it won’t break and fall. Faith is similar to trust. Yes you are believing something will happen that you can’t see, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that it is unfounded. People who believe/trust something without a reason (I would say) are practicing blind faith.

Dear Prof. Lennox, you are doing an outstanding job in helping those who are trying to save their faith in God. I have been watching a presentation by Atheist Richard Carrier on Mystery cults. From what I saw he mentioned that ancient Gods such as Osiris, Adonis, Romulus, Zalmoxis and Inanna contain a similar storyline as the story of Jesus before the birth of Christianity. He seems to draw a connection between these myths and the story of Jesus in his stance that Jesus did not exist as a real person. Given that the original text of the Bible has been lost I am desperate to receive your opinion on this.

JC Kensway that’s quite a broad subject. It is important that we make sure that we are speaking the same language. Not many Christians, for instance, would subscribe to Hume’s definition of supernatural or miracle, so if that’s what you’re talking about, we won’t be speaking about the same thing.

Dr. Lennox what is your response to the problem of the hiddeness of God?
@Incandescence555
@Incandescence555 4 жыл бұрын
So I think there are several points one can present to respond to this, I say in advance I am a complete amateur and just sharing a few thoughts: 1. God is everywhere- the language of DNA, the complexity of the universe, the love and pleasure from holding your newborn child, the biochemistry of a human body 2. If we could see God materially- then it wouldn't be much of a test would it? It wouldn't be faith- which is demanded by the major religions- if we could just see God day to day then it would reduce God to our level, which is not right because we are not divine, we are creation 3. Would God really be God if he existed in the same material way that we exist? By definition, God must be different to us materially- he can't be of the same 'stuff' as us- with both Islam and Judaism positing a non-material, ethereal God that is non-material 4. Perhaps we couldn't view or understand God in any way presented to us in this life- as we are in a mortal existence- we are not created, in our current form, to be able to be with God or see him- we just can't physically do it, it's too much for the senses 5. Not seeing God in this life means we have an ultimate, transcendental goal to work towards- one that frames life as a moral journey, where we strive for good, love and justice- seeing God, the divine union in the next life is for the next life, not for this one- this life is a test, a 'soul making' endeavour- no one truly wants the reward before the toil? Most understand the pleasure to be in the toil, the journey...

God is evident everywhere at all times. Scripture says that the pure of heart are blessed, for they will see God (Matthew 5:8). St. Paul also says that "the invisible things of Him are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made" (Romans 1:20). These texts and others point to a process that Christians must go through in order to see things as they are. This doctrine in the Orthodox Church is called Theosis--an ancient Christian doctrine of salvation that involves the cleansing of the heart (Nous), which leads to spiritual purification, illumination, and eventually to glorification. This is also known as the vision of God, or Theoria. Obviously, God's nature is transcendent, but He is truly immanent through His energies. It's the goal of Christian life to purify oneself of the passions through faith, repentance, obedience and prayer; only then can one see reality as it truly is: patterned after the divine Logos and eternally sustained through God's energies out of love. Ancient people didn't have the same issue with the hiddenness of God. It's only because we live in a materialist society that we struggle to "see" Him. If you attend Divine Liturgy, engage in daily prayer, and live according to His commandments, you will begin to develop a sense for His presence. The reason western Christianity is in such a poor state today is because it lost the notions of Theosis and Nous. These are essential concepts for all Christians!

@@gumusluk05 I remember believing as you do when I was a teenager. I believed myself to be a dissident intellectual, shattering the culturally conditioned ignorance and small-minded prejudices of my parents and peers. Then, I grew up. Not just physically, but intellectually and spiritually. My thirst for truth led me to the inescapable conclusion that I had been duped by midwit writers and corporate sanctioned academics, who had a vested interest in reducing humanity to alienated, consumerist automatons. I was truly brainwashed into conformity, fooled into thinking I was smarter than everyone else because I had read Bertrand Russell and could recite Richard Dawkins lines. In reality, I had acquired a worldview that was philosophically unjustifiable and spiritually deadening as I succeeded in becoming a puppet for well-connected corporate marxists. Secular materialism is a dead-end philosophy that destroys the possibility of objective truth and values, and reduces the human condition to absurdity as we become nothing but alienated egos seeking to exercise our will over others. If you care for truth, then I urge you to study ancient Christianity, as you will discover that what you've been told about our history is mostly lies, particularly with regards to its intellectual integrity and spiritual richness. Don't be be fooled by corporate hacks who portray Christianity as foolish superstition. I wish you luck on your journey. God bless!

Jesus Christ may have been the humanistic god man ever created but the fact is he was created out wanting imagination by the people who wanted a god such as that. Peaceful loving and compassionate to the human experience, that's why this god is still believed and worshiped to this day.

Anyway, I consider the catholic doctrine to be correct in many aspects, despite the huge amount of mistakes it had committed, which are undeniable. However, the true and more important hazards christians are facing come from many other aspects that stablishing conflicts among congregations. That is the point that should prevail.

@Ruža Šaronska I have been reading lots about the history of the Christian Church and the church fathers. I am beginning to think that it is the true church. I will continue to look into this. I am always keen to hear from learned Christians and how they rationalise what their belief system to follow. The decisions may be subtle but I think they are important.

@@brianmurray4559 best is to read directly what the church fathers have written instead of others' interpretations of those & keep scriptural context and truth as your guard rail. Because there are many traditions in roman catholic & eastern orthodox that were developed over time, then taken as orthodoxy, which are untrue because some of the traditions when they 1st appeared in the early 2nd cent were condemned by the church fathers. Try to read from several sources to avoid bias..that s my recommendation. Most important thing, pray psalm 139:23-24. We tend to subconsciously be defensive or inclined to hold on to certain principles as truth, but allow God through His word and Holy Spirit to give you a discerning mind

Will you go to Heaven? Here’s a quick test: Have you ever lied, stolen, or used God’s name in vain? Jesus said, “Whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” If you have done these things, God sees you as a lying, thieving, blasphemous, adulterer at heart, and the Bible warns that one day God will punish you in a terrible place called Hell. But God is not willing that any should perish. Sinners broke God’s Law and Jesus paid their fine. This means that God can legally dismiss their case: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Then Jesus rose from the grave, defeating it. Today, repent and trust Jesus, and God will give you eternal life as a free gift. Then read the Bible daily and obey it. God will never fail you. (living waters/ray comfort) God bless

IT IS SOOOO interesting to watch this 2020 show after having just viewed another “Unbelievable?” Show of 2019: Alister McGrath & Bret Weinstein • Religion: Useful fiction or ultimate truth? PART 1. Lennox speaks here directly to the scientism of McGrath & Weinstein in the earlier show. Another year now gone by, and I fear that after Covid people have not learned the lessons Lennox mentions have traditionally been learned as the result of great trials reminding us of the fragility of life. Lennox is right about young people…they have grown up unexposed to rational and reasonable reasons to believe in God. Thus, the default position of atheism - or disinterested doubt - prevails. I would love to hear Lennox juxtapose his ideas (in an UNBELIEVABLE? friendly dialogue) with either one of McGrath or Weinstein. Another show, Justin?
