Ah I couldn’t disagree more. I mean, obviously I’m glad he’s healthy and I do think he’s very polite and intelligent, but I can’t stand the way he debates. He can some make thoughtful points, but he often makes these grand unfounded assertions in the course that he just sweeps under the rug. He makes a fairly well known claim regarding miracles, that god “feeds” an event in. Well how the hell does he know?! I’ve watched several of his debates and he has never once provided any sort of support for this belief, argument is a stretch. I’m not even saying he’s wrong, but he provides absolutely nothing to say he’s right. He does this with so many other claims in various debates. I could understand this in philosophical discourse, but he discusses these claims with scientists as if they’re on the same level as the scientific facts being presented. Which in unequivocally not the case.

A wonderful episode with Dr. Lennox and Justin. But with every discussion on apologetics, I think we need to underline and put to the forefront that people do not make decisions based upon “truth” or “evidence”. Some do, sometimes, but most often people make decisions based upon what is “comfortable” or “safe” for them. For example, people stay in certain religious groups because of family and the safety net that one’s culture provides. Atheists (which are very religious people) fall into this same camp. Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs does not even contain a reference to “truth”. All our basic human needs are other things than what is bottom-line truth. Are we not willing to include this truth (that people do not follow truth but instead choose comfort, safety, human relationships, etc) because we want to keep people listening to our “apologetic/logical programs”? Let’s face the facts. I say we need to continue to argue the truth and present the evidence, but always say that people generally hold positions because of other factors.

GREAT VIDEO. John Lennox is ALWAYS so winsome in his demeanor and articulation of his beliefs and in answering hard questions. I absolutely love him. He is a joy to watch and listen to and a treasured asset to the body of believers, esp. those with scientific background. I have used his books and videos over and over again in my efforts to witness. I'm wondering however if you or John have ever researched the matter of Paul, i.e. whether he was a legitimate apostle, or a false one, one who taught much false doctrine, esp. that of doing away with the Eternal Law, as no longer needed, doing away with repentance and obedience, and providing abundant fodder for "Cheap Grace", and "the Trinity", and other nonsense, etc.? I know your first knee-jerk reaction will be to pounce all over this as heresy, and insist, "You just don't understand Paul", but I do understand him, and I challenge you to give it serious, Berean, prayerful study. It will be a paradigm shift, and no less revolutionary than the one inspired by Copernicus, (though Copernicus ended up being wrong after all). In Matthew 24, Jesus EXPLICITLY warned us to BEWARE of false prophets and false Christs, and if someone showed up in the desert (Road to Damascus) claiming to be him, he should NOT believe it or follow after it, because when Jesus comes back it will be like lightning from east to west for the whole world to see at the same time. Paul, who NEVER heard Jesus teach, NEVER even met him in the flesh, would NOT be aware of this warning by him, and Paul did EXACTLY what Jesus said NOT to do. So WHO are you going to believe, Paul OR Jesus? Paul NEVER quoted Jesus, NEVER taught what he taught, and in fact taught the OPPOSITE of what Jesus taught, and NEVER even went to the disciples to learn from them, disciples who were with Jesus "in the flesh", day in and day out for 3 1/2 years. That is why Paul only taught Jesus' DEATH, and NOT his LIFE or his TEACHINGS. Paul thought himself SUPERIOR to the TRUE apostles, claiming he didn't need to learn from them because he got his knowledge from direct, personal visions of Jesus. How is this different than John Smith and other would-be prophets who believe they have received updated information/revelation? And why would our Lord choose the twelve, to have them be a witness ONLY for a couple years, and then be rendered obsolete as Jesus appointed a NEW apostle to teach a NEW Gospel, that their work was superceded, and they, even though supposedly called "friends" of Jesus, were never given a heads-up or warning that this was the NEW PLAN? Paul was only SELF-appointed and didn't even meet the Acts 1 requirements for apostleship. His 3 alleged "conversion" stories all contradict each other and has no witness to it. The TRUE apostles, those CHOSEN by Jesus (Yahushua), CALLED OUT Paul and REJECTED him, as did Jesus himself (Rev. 2) - Also Paul was rejected by the first Christians known as the Ebionites, and Paul's heresy was only resurrected with Marcion in the 2nd century. The evidence against this arrogant, lying, deceiving, blaspheming, murderous and odious human being is monumental, ONCE your eyes have been opened. But we have been brainwashed by Paul for so long, centuries and centuries, and by alleged "Pillars of the Faith" like Augustine and Calvin and Luther, that it seems heresy to even dare to question him. 99% of Christendom is under his spell. He is surely AN, if not THE, Antichrist we've been warned about. I urge you, and John Lennox, and anyone reading this comment, to investigate for yourself the truth about Paul. The salvation that Jesus (Yahoshua) was, and taught, is NOT what Paul taught, so your eternal destiny may hinge on whether you do this research or not. Thanks again for the video, and the resources you mentioned. I will certainly look into them.

Here's my question: How is it that John Lennox know so much about a god he has never seen?
@marcocortes99682 жыл бұрын
If God was made of matter, he would decay like all of us, but God doesn't live according to the laws of nature because he is the one who created them. God exists outside of space, time and matter. But what connects this to the history most people know, is that the son of God came into flesh nearly 2,000 years ago and his name is Jesus Christ. It is through Jesus, that John knows so much about God. You can learn about God too, if you declare with your mouth "Jesus is Lord" and believe in your heart that God raised him form the dead, you will be saved. Certainly, he will come into your heart and he will reveal to you the things you don't understand right now. I hope you do, I love you and I would love for you to experience the love Jesus has shown me and many others. He is just waiting on you, and I wish you the best.

Since there is no creator- creation difference, the Eastern religions and philosophies have diverse and complicated views to explain what human life is. Evolutionary theory is being refined, but that doesnt mean so-called macro evolution has been shown to be false. Most evolutionists view macro evolution as micro evolution over very long periods of time. As a non-biologist he typically quotes a handful of scientists who have doubts about evolution despite the vast majority of biologists accepting it as the truth. For anyone interested in Christians who accept evolutionary theory, Id recommend the Biologos site. I find Lennox's approach to Genesis 1 and 2 rather odd. He seems to want to understand some of it as literal history, and other parts metaphorical or some such view. He rejects a 'day' as a literal 24 hour period, because he believes the science that says the universe is 14.5 billion years old, and the earth around 4 billion years old. He knows the evidence is overwhelming. But he then views the story of the first man and woman to be literal history, as if that is what you would have seen if youd had a video camera at the time. But why the need for a 'special creation' when God had used evolution over those very long periods of time for the development for the rest of life? Biologically we are still animals, even if made in His image. I suspect our image-bearing is more to do with our consciousness of self, rather than our physicality.

Does Prof Lennox think a mind (God's) has anything to do with the universe? If so, why does he think that compared to say naturalism in which no mind is required and instead there is just some fundamental field like gravity?

@@mortyoreillyImagine a universe in which no God exists. Now imagine one where a God's mind exists and he creates universes. @mortyoreilly2 жыл бұрын
@@jimcummins1543 Jim I can’t claim to completely understand your proposition, however I think the answer to what we should believe lies in what the evidence points to. We know the universe as we understand it (space, matter and time) had a beginning, which means it was caused by something outside the universe. A thing cannot be its own cause. Before then there was, by definition, nothing, certainly nothing we can describe by reference to matter, particles, fields, quantum vacuums, gravity, energy or any other physical phenomena. We know that the physical constants that were established at the beginning of the universe and which allowed molecules, stars and galaxies to form are infinitesimally finely balanced. So much so that it is generally considered impossible for them to have come about by chance. Indeed, scientists seeking an explanation that avoids the involvement of a ‘mind’ have invented the completely unscientific ‘multiverse’ theory. So I would say that the scientific evidence points to something, or someone, outside the universe, the so-called uncaused cause, who is the agent who brought about the universe, and who is the intelligence behind the physical laws and constants that sustain it. In other words, the eternal all powerful God of the Bible. I wish you the best of luck in your search and hope you always follow where the evidence leads, not just in the scientific field but in history and personal experience as well.

@@mortyoreilly In my world view a mind is just an emergent property of a brain. When you assert that the most basic thing is a mind/brain then that isn't convincing to me because you are referencing something more complex than a fundamental field as the most fundamental thing. The reason I find a field more simple is because it doesn't require all of the systems that we know support brains. If you don't think minds are physical then I'd ask what evidence you are using to assert that minds are anything but physical? Philosophers agree that a mind is most likely physical so I am not sure what authority you would use to appeal to minds being designed/non-physical?

Salvation The secret to winning over the emotions of any audience, is to tell them what they want to hear. The fact is, that before Judaism, there were many other religions with favorite myths of their own. At one time Jews believed in many gods, until one group of Jews decided that if they created the one-god dogma of monotheism, every person on earth would have to join their religion if they wanted to be "saved." As history proved, that worked against their story that the Jews were God's chosen few, when along came a group of Jews that thought about how they could create a son of the Jewish god, that would materialize on earth to teach the one and only truth, that only through Jesus could anyone be saved ... and that was the start of the Christian religion, with Catholicism becoming predominant. And then, the Muslims got in the act, claiming that the one God (Allah, which is the Islamic word for God) favored only Muslims. Then the Protestants got into the act, by claiming that only they were favorites of Jesus. You will see the lies, but only if, and when, you are “willing” to see them. Been there ... did that.

Jmmanuel didn't die on the cross because he did a meditation to keep alive. There are lots of types of meditation, but the exact one he did, I don't know. His family & disciples took him to a cave (doesn't exist anymore) in the back so that the Roman soldiers wouldn't see. Healers from India came to nurse him back to health. Took them three days. When he got better, they all walked to India. Mary died while on the long walk. Jmmanuel made it to India, married an Indian woman and had lots of children. He died either at the age of 111 or 113 years old. This is from the book, The Talmud of Jmmanuel, by Judas Ischkerioth, final draft by "Billy" Eduard Albert Meier (BEAM) & The Plejaren.

That was not a defense of those cities merely lacking the experience that could cause them to believe. It is a hyperbolic statement to demonstrate how justified the LORD is in destroying those cities; cities that now reject CHRIST are more justly being judged and condemned. This also is a pointing to the Deity of JESUS that rejecting HIM is a graver offense than just violating the Law.

Your Faith. God is the param atma, the concious mind of the universe and beyond. The WORD of God is in God and is God. The Spirit of God is in God and is God. The Word and Spirit of God can be with God and it can go to perform the bidding of God. Hence God is the param atma with His Word and Spirit. This is known as the Trinity. An example of the sun will clarify this aspect. The sun has two other elements viz. Heat and light. The heat of the sun its light and the sun is not three sun but one sun, like the Word of God and Spirit of God and God is one God. The heat and light of the sun, is in the sun and yet at the same time can be on earth or any other place. Similarly the Word and Spirit of God is with God and at the same time manifest anywhere, but all these make only one God. The three persons in one God forms God like the three sides of a triangle. Even if one side is missing it cannot be called a triangle. These are simple examples for understanding and cannot be considered otherwise. God created the universe, the angles and all other creation including human beings. The angles and human being have the spirit of God, which is also referred as the soul. The angels and human beings have a free will. Even to disobey God. The law says disobedience to God's command is sin and the punishment for sin is death. Lucifer and some of his angles revolted against God, when God made man the steward of creation. God threw Satan and his fallen angels on to the earth where they rule now. Satan swore to destroy man, Gods favorite creation and for this he tempted Adam and Eve and caused them to sin. They disobeyed God by eating the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge. Adam and eve were also thrown into this world, where satan was already shunted from heaven. Result of their disobedience was death of body and soul. Law was same for humans and for Satan and his followers. However Satan revolted against God by his own free will, fully knowing the consequences and was not tricked by anyone but Adam and Eve were tricked by Satan. God therefore in His wisdom promised a MASSIAH to save human beings from this punishment. Since human beings had disobeyed God, humans must face the judgment and punishment. One man who is sinless and a human being, can die to redeem all humankind. He would be the Messiah. Since God had promised this messiah, God had to provide. In order to have such a person, the Word of God, which is God, had to incarnate as a human being, because only a human being's death, can fulfill the law and redeem humankind from the punishment of the law. Two thousand years ago, the word of God became man. The man was born to a virgin woman, by the overshadowing of the holy spirit of God, who is also God, third person from the Trinity. Jesus was therefore perfect God and perfect man. Since Jesus was born of the spirit. Jesus became the son of God as He was begotten by God. The word of God took the title of Son of God, as a human being. Jesus was God because He is the Word incarnate and also human Son of God, because he was son of Mary, a human being. Therefore He was a perfect and sinlesshuman being. Once this is clear, you will have no confusion of the divinity of Jesus. During the lifetime of jesus He projected Himself both as man with human qualities and as God, revealing divine qualities. Both these personalities are distinct and can be projected according to the circumstances. That is why Jesus claim divinity with God, because of Word of God in Him and at other times jesus projected Himself as human, who is totally dependent on God. The sayings of Jesus must be seen in this light, as to who is speaking and the context, or else we will misunderstand the Bible. you will see both the human and divine aspect clearly. For example jesus was tempted by the devil, Mathew chapter 4 verses 1 to 11., jesus felt hungry and thirsty. It was the human Jesus, who was tempted and not the divine Jesus. Human jesus had fear of death, as we see His prayers in the garden of Gethsemane. Jesus knew He would be forsaken, as jesus the word of God, being God could not die. Gospel of Mark chapter 14 verses 32 onwards. Jesus the human being was destined to be crucified. Hence jesus the God had to forsake the human jesus, to go for crucifixion as a human jesus. That is why we hear jesus crying out from the cross to God, asking why he was forsaken. Gospel of Mark chapter 15 verses 33 onwards.p God knows that jesus the human must pay the price to liberate mankind. Alternatively we see the divine nature of Jesus. His miracles, especiallythe healing of the paralyticman ,Mathew chapter 9 verses one onwards. Here Jesus says, take heart my son, your sins are forgiven. Only God can forgive sin. By this act of forgiving sin Jesus show His divinity. It is the Word of God in Jesus was speaking. The act of Jesus cleansing the temple Mathew chapter 21 verses 12 onwards. The turning of tables of money changers in Jerusalem temple. Chasing the traders of doves and other sacrificial animals would under normal circumstances be a sin, If jesus the human had done this. It would be sinful of beating and destroying property of others. Similarly Jesus calls the phrases a brood of vipers hippocrites. These would be sinful for human Jesus, but these acts are not sinful, for Jesus the Word of God who has the authority to punish. So the distinction is clear, of God Jesus, as God Jesus can do all these acts but human Jesus doing them would be sinful. The God Jesus was all powerful. We see that nature and its law obeying God Jesus, tells us about His divinity ,being the Word of God. However, the human Jesus was forsaken by the Word of God, when He was arrested in the garden of Gethsemane. John chapter 18 verses 4 onwards. The Word of God distanced from human Jesus. It was the human jesus who was to be crucified and die for all mankind to fulfill the Law and the judgment, thereby redeeming all mankind. When Jesus said I am He the people who came to arrest Jesus drew back and fell to the ground. From that point onwards Jesus the human being went as human for the crucifixion. When that mission was over, God the Father shifted Himself from being a judge, to again being the Father, as the Law was fulfilled. He once again became Father to Adam and eve and their descendents. After jesus died, the Word of God again entered into the lifeless body of jesus and resurrected Him. Jesus regained His divinity as the Word of God is now once again is in Him. Jesus then regained paradise, went to hades to liberate the souls there and on the third day appeared on the earth. When jesus was on this earth before His death, his divinity and humanity could be split, but after the resurrection His humanity is merged for ever in the Divinity . Therefore jesus is God because of the Word of God is in Him. He still has His human nature and that's why He is seated at the right hand of the Father. That is why Jesus the human is prophet, priest and king. After the death of Jesus on the cross the Law being fulfilled, the judging God became Father God and Jesus became God's Son, two thousand years ago, when God bigotened Him. Jesus was God because He is the incarnated Word, when He was upon the earth. The Word of God is NOW know as the Son of God. That is why Christians belive the Father, Son and the Holy spirit is the Trinity, which earlier was known as Father, Word of God and Holy SpiritofGod. This divine human jesus will come again soon, to judge the world and then rule over His kingdom for thousand year. You must believe that Jesus is your redeemer and live by His command, only then, you will not have to go through the judgment route, all other people, will have to go through judgment. Now is the time to make your decision. Do you want to be saved by the grace of Jesus, which He has gained by His obedience to the Fathers command to die on the cross for all humanity. All mankind is saved. The condition is to accept Jesus as your Savior and to live by His teachings. If you fulfill both these conditions then you will not be judged but is saved by Jesus or you choose the judgment route, where you will have to answer for your life. If your life is blameless then you may receive the mercy of God and get everlasting life in God's kingdom. Why wait for judgment, it is wiser to be saved by Jesus when we are on earth and avoid judgment. The choice is ours. This interpretation will answer all questions. Can God incarnate as human. The answer is yes. The Word of God incarnated as a human jesus. However human cannot be God. That is why Jesus is perfect God and perfect mam. How Jesus is God, because Jesus is the incarnation of the Word of God, who is God, the second person of trinity. How jesus is the son of God, because God has begotten Jesus through Mary, two thousand years ago. as a human jesus, who as man must die for the sins of all mankind. This proves Jesus the man died not as God because God cannot die. Jesus is now in heaven after His resurrection and is God because He is now the Word of God. The human jesus is seated at the right hand of God as prophet, priest and king. You cannot now have a split, of the personality of jesus, as divinity is merged in the humanity of Jesus. That is why we now say the Trinity as Father, Son and the Holy spirit. Three persons in ONE God George Varghese

Lennox is one of those who would see no difference between an hour of prayer and Bible reading and/or sitting down with Jesus at Cracker Barrel for breakfast…in direct conversation. Fact is…..he’s unable to answer in favor of the later. That would be to compromise the integrity/legitimacy of his god.

John Lennox's question whether science can explain everything rubs me up the wrong way. What a cheeky way to ask! He should be well aware that if it could, the work would be done, and all scientists could go home and enjoy retirement! I can only respond with the question: Can god explain anything at all? I am fully aware that there are a lot of unsolved questions in science, and christian apologists are wont to belabor this point, particularly in the fields of evolution and cosmology. Most scientists are happy to admit that there are large gaps of knowledge. But what has god, or religion, to offer here? Is there anything more than "god did it"? I'm sorry, but I don't see any explanation from the religious side that would be worthy of the name, and Lennox hasn't anything on offer either, as far as I can see. It simply isn't enough to say that there needs to be an explanation, and since science hasn't got it yet, it must be god. If Lennox is a scientist, he ought to know what scientists expect from an explanation: That it can be tested, that it allows making predictions that can be checked against reality, that it can distinguish between plausible and implausible outcomes. The god hypothesis has nothing like this on offer. That's why it is completely fruitless for science. It is no coincidence that scientific knowledge expanded exponentially since scientists essentially eradicated god from their methodology, and proceeded as if he didn't exist, a few hundred years ago. That can be done regardless of whether you are a believer or not. And it worked spectacularly well, which nobody really can deny. That is supposed to tell you something: God, as a scientific explanation, is a total failure. You can explain anything with it, therefore it explains nothing. You can equally claim that god created a universe with a stationary flat earth at the center, as you can claim that he created one where the earth is a spherical planet circling around a random sun in a random galaxy somewhere in a vast and mostly empty universe. If the earth was a cube made of cheese, you would claim that god made that, too. You see, god is utterly useless as an explanation for anything. You'd be much better off, with less chance of egg ending up on your face, if you plainly admitted that you don't know what you don't know, rather than postulating arbitrarily that "god did it"! And this doesn't even touch the question of which particular variant of a god it is supposed to be. Surely, Lennox is intelligent enough to realize this. Yet he careers on claiming that he believes in god BECAUSE he is a scientist! Something doesn't wash here!

@Caratacus I don't experience that much uninterrogated scientism, to be honest. I encounter more accusations by the religious side, who seem to take every pro-science uttering that doesn't include a disclaimer to be guilty of uncritical scientism. It is quite clear from public discourse that a large part of the religious side indeed has a serious problem with science, and this includes many who proclaim that they don't have such a problem. I would recommend to the religious side to first address those problems within their own ranks instead of trying to act as the arbiter who decides what science should do and how far it should go. I find it almost comical to see the religious remind scientists of something most of them need no reminder for anyway: That they don't have the answer for everything. The religious side are really those who act as if they had that universal answer, all the while their answer is completely useless for any quest for truth. It is an "answer" that only satisfies the ignorant, and it is used to keep them ignorant. It makes the ignorant feel like they know more than the experts, so that they are justified in looking down on them and harassing them. This is what I see being played out in popular culture right now. Just to mention one example that should be on everybody's mind right now: The Covid pandemic. Science has done an amazing job at predicting it, analyzing it, recommending countermeasures against it, and producing vaccination and medicine for it. And what do large parts of the religious do: They vilify it, ridicule it, harass scientists associated with it, refuse to heed warnings and recommendations, promote magical thinking, and more. Not all of the religious, but a large and very vocal part. THAT is the problem, not the overbearing scientists. Apparently, religion has nothing constructive on offer here, and much of it is openly and effectively destructive. So my advice to religion is: Take care of the plank in your own eye first, before worrying about the speck of sawdust in science's eye.

@Caratacus Saying truths publicly can be a very bad thing when it is half-truths, or just enough truth to evoke a wrong impression. You can quite literally lie with the truth. I don't need to give examples, do I? Nobody has a monopoly on truth. Science doesn't reclaim one for itself. But religion often does. They often think they have the absolute, unquestionable truth, and act accordingly. When the religious criticize science for allegedly reclaiming a truth monopoly for themselves, they are wrongly accusing science of what they are doing themselves, in a public sphere that is very receptive for that kind of misleading propaganda. So what I want to get across is this: The religious side is the absolute wrong side to be publicly rubbing this truth under the nose of science. Hypocrisy is the word that springs to mind immediately. And can you please answer a question for me? Who are you referring to when you identify "so much uncritical devotees of Scientism"? I can't help noting the religious language you are using, which I interpret as a tacit accusation of religiosity. You seem to believe it is a widespread problem. It shouldn't be difficult to point out those who are at the center of it. Be concrete please, give names.

@Caratacus Yes, I'm using the broad brush for the sake of conciseness. Remember what I wrote about disclaimers? This seems to be an instance of this problem. That didn't take long, did it? Apart from that, don't you think that continuing to ignore my point is somewhat lame? Can I take this as a sign of defeat?

@Caratacus I don’t see anywhere in the post that science is the ONLY method of understanding and gaining knowledge. He simply describing how Lennox is mischaracterized it. Made leaps that aren’t there and failed to draw any tangible explanations from a god. Again, no one is saying science is the only way. You seem to agree it’s a very good method, and I would agree, I think it’s the best, but not the only. It’s certainly not the only method to explore knowledge. Now verification gets a bit muddy. I’m open to learning, but how would verify and knowledge claims without science? Genuine question, not mocking or anything. And I mean science in the broadest term, as in the scientific method.

Would it seem absurd if someone was trying to convince you there is a second invisible sun in the sky? That's how you sound to atheists. Don't act like I am the one who has the problem because I don't see the second sun in reallity. I also don't see your God in reality. It appears to be only an imaginary character. Good luck to both of you, gentlemen. If you truly understood the meaning of Jesus' words "Deny yourself, pick up your cross and follow me", you wouldn't smile any longer because this is the hardest thing ever put before any man. Talk about religion is easy. Live it! But first, try to find out what Jesus meant by the 'self' that is to be denied. It has been said that "The man who conquers self is mightier than he who conquers many cities or smites a thousand men in war." How about it? Pick up this challenge.

Denying self means to live as an others-centered person. Jesus was the only person to do this perfectly, but we are to follow in His steps. Take a look at Matthew 16:24. Galatians 5:1 tells us that “It was for freedom that Christ has set us free”. It is not a life of self-denial but a life of following Christ in freedom and truth.

@@herbklinder8985. The freedom Jesus offers is not only the forgiveness of sins, but freedom FROM sin -- to no longer be enslaved to sin Some people are truly hungry for the truth, while others are only interested in mocking it. If you are the former, I suggest reading the book of Romans! Paul does an excellent job explaining the theology of Christianity - what exactly did God accomplish through Jesus.
