I’ve got the Lofgren Duke Roper in Timber Shinki Hikaku Horsebutt, very similar in colour, mine are maybe two shade lighter.🤘😎🇨🇦

By the way, the cordovan layer is very thick, dense and homogeneous. There are human diseases in which a very thick layer of collagen (resembling the cordovan layer) is deposited throughout the dermis and extending to the subcutaneous (fatty) layer. The disease is called scleroderma, which can be localized and “tame,” but the widespread variant (systemic sclerosis) usually involves internal organs. It is related to lupus (which you may have heard of).

I really appreciate your work, Dale. This was a very good video. About 2 months ago, I received a pair of John Lofgren "Dark Brown" Shinki Horsebutt Engineers. I don't know John Lofgren, but I have a number of pairs of his Engineer boots. I DO believe that he is all of good things that you pointed out about him, but "Dark Brown?" There is nothing DARK or Brown about these boots!. Mine (and yours) are definitely in the "burgundy" category, and they look like they belong to my "family" of burgundy Lofgren boots - regular JL burgundy and the EZO SHIKA DEERSKIN BURNT BURGUNDY pair. I love burgundy, but I was trying to add a "True Brown" pair to my stable. Maybe next time! By the way, in watching your videos, I enjoyed the description of what "cordovan" is. I am a dermatopathologist and as you know, there is no comparable layer in human skin. If the cordovan layer WERE present in human skin, I am 100% certain that we would call it "dermis." Like the reticular dermis, it is nearly all collagen (as are tendons, ligaments, and the background substance on which bone (calcium mostly) is deposited. Collagen is very tough and it is what gives leather its strength. "Dermis profundus" would be a good name for the cordovan layer (profundus = DEEP). For scientific purposes, I believe that "cordovan layer" needs a scientific name. By the way, there is no muscle in the cordovan layer, only beneath it (I'm sure you know that, but in one video you seemed to be a little unsure). Keep up the great work!

I have the JLB in this brown shinki and a renavgoods in black. Two things to consider: 1) if this is your first horse hide boot be prepared for a long break in period. Horse is thick and stiff 2) fit is everything. For me the JLB fits better and is more comfortable. This is not a knock on Renavgoods but just the shape of my feet. By far the hardest part about buying engineer boots is getting a good fit. I waited 2-3 years to get the JLB horse hide boots. If you have patience you can get a great pair of boots. The hard part is when they become available you better jump at them. The window for buying is usually only a few days to a week.

Hey! Mind doing a few months' in patina vid on the John Lofgren? I tried them on in S&S and was able to get a pretty damn perfect fit, but I'm not 100% sold on the color. You're right, it's definitely a bit reddish in color. I wonder if the color might darken a bit with wear and with exposure to water. I'd also consider darkening the stitching since it's a tad too bright for me.

Nice boot, engineer boots are pretty cool. My only gripe is the weight of the boots, that's why I mostly wear 6" service boots, don't need the extra weight. I may one day pick up a engineer boot only for casual use.

How do you condition Shinki Horsehide? Do you just use Venetian on these? The depth of color is amazing

I absolutely love John Lofgrens I only hope to own a pair someday. They are my ultimate footwear piece. Though I will say I really like the decorative stitching on your boots much more. If I could get that on a pair of JL’s I would probably wet my pants. 😅

If I am a size 7E or 7.5D should I get a size 7 in Lofgren engineers?

IMHO, the JLB have the way more balanced last and overall shape. The Renavgoods are out of proportion to me. Regarding the sizing: I would not say, go half down. I would rather claim: Go with your Red Wing, Alden, etc. size. I own two pairs of JLBs, the M-43 and the Engineers in natural CXL. Same size as my 875 Moctoes or Aldens. Toe box is snug and will require some work, but larger, these boots would have too roomy heels.
