John Lydon, Public Image Ltd, Hawaii
The track was released in February as the song the post-punk legends would take to the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest if they had made it through the Irish selection process.
Hawaii is a very personal song which Lydon wrote as a poignant love letter to his wife Nora, who is living with Alzheimer’s. Back in 2020, Lydon revealed that he had abandoned a PiL album in order to provide care for her.
“It is dedicated to everyone going through tough times on the journey of life, with the person they care for the most,” Lydon said of the new song, adding: “It’s also a message of hope that ultimately love conquers all.”

It’s funny to see him old and stumbling around a new song he wrote and he’s still one of the best frontmen of all time. That doesn’t change, And I think it’s because he’s always really told what he really saw and felt, even when that was ugly and unpopular. He did it with songs like “bodies,” and “God save the Queen” he’s doing it with his wife’s illness. That’s what makes his work go in the different direction to most and be so much better than most. I mean this is the guy that changed the entire direction of punk, into an art form that would call out wrongs others wouldn’t, and thought about “how things are and is that right,” far more than most. I’m glad he’s still singing. He’s still making the world confront fears like old age and watching a partner slip away. Things we don’t mention they’re so scary.
