I’m a Calvinist and I’ve benefited a lot from MacArthur’s ministry, and this is one of the most disheartening and disappointing thing that I’ve heard in a long while. I pray for repentance for the elders and leaders involved at Grace, I pray it for her husband, and I pray that Eileen and her children would continue to grow in the grace of the Lord. But this should remind us to not put our hope and faith in pastors or preachers, but in Christ and Christ alone. Even men who are as great as teachers as John MacArthur, are still sinners in need of grace. Lord keep us from the evil in our own hearts. Lord may we seek to be like You in doing justice and righteousness, protecting those who can’t protect themselves.

Thanks for your comment. While not a Calvinist myself I deeply respect the high esteem for God and Scripture I find in people like Calvinists and the John McArthur "camp" (not being derogative here). However this story is really sickening. Not surprised unfortunately because it seems to me there is waaaayyy too much emphasis on John MA, and others members of the Calvinist pantheon like Spurgeon (e.g. this litany of "Prince of preachers" bis repetitam ad nauseam), etc. Not that I dislike Spurgeon, but I don't understand putting so much emphasis on men, no matter how good and deep their work was. All of this while I see so much (often justified) criticism in those same circles, against stardom culture in other non-Calvinist circles... this is perplexing. Of course the exact same issue happens in other circles, this is not a Calvinist problem. When people are put that high on a pedestal, it's only a matter of time until at least some sort of abuse occurs.

@@TimothyFish She is not the biblical counselor. So he automatically knows better and should’ve reported. She already filed for protection soon after she found out about the child’s abuse, so idk what you mean by so long. also the reporter stated she was abused as well as the kids. So to try and point blame at her is wild, because after she already filed for protection, the “Biblical counsel” at that church, scolded her and said she shouldn’t have gone to the police. I don’t understand why you are trying to take blame off of them and shift it towards her. She was already fearful of her husband, who is supposed to be her protection, as a victim of abuse, do you know how hard it is to come out and report in the first place, especially when it’s your spouse, and someone high up in a church. Then to again to be told by multiple leaders using Gods Word to say she should stay and not have, told the police the first time. That’s physical abuse, verbal abuse, as well as spiritual and Biblical manipulation. There is a lack of compassion, once you try to unreasonable shift blame to the victim.

@@TimothyFish it’s already stated that she filed soon after she found out about the children. And INSTANTLY reported when sexual abuse was found out. So idk what your point is about she should’ve done something sooner(you’ll have to explain that)… she was told that she should have not done that, and shouldn’t go to the cops any further. Why? Why would a biblical counselor tell the parent that the authorities shouldn’t be involved, for something the mother claims to know is happening to her kids? Because she needs to “submit to abuse” and “suffer for Jesus” Again no “hindsight” needed. That’s bad counsel, and biblical manipulation….for a victim it’s less likely for them to speak up more, when everyone is telling you to keep quiet and suffer, while you and your kids are still on the receiving end. Everything is not black and white when it comes to victims of abuse. Why do you think people who are rape victims wait a whole lifetime before saying anything… no one said she is perfect. But leadership as a whole failed in a grotesque way, even post sentence address the sermon clip as far as publicly shaming her and questioning her salvation in front of the whole congregation with her not being able to defend herself, what about already convicted, and trying to make him look like a hero missionary in prison and supporting him, after going through trial? That’s after more information came out, you know “hindsight”. I never said they were evil, but what they did definitely was. They abandoned compassion for her. In this scenario to try and take the fault from these so called leaders, and point to her is ridiculous and twisted.

Sadly, this was a timely discussion. My wife prayed for a woman at a conference recently, and this was effectively her story. She was wrecked that her pastor told her to "submit" to her abusive husband. My wife held her as she wept. I see this way of thinking as something of an "old regime." They are stuck in their presuppositions and preunderstanding of the text and are unable to shake these archaic and false Biblical mindsets of marriage, as well as things like cessationism. Appreciate your heart and thoughts, and commitment to the Word, brother.
@lizh19882 жыл бұрын
The church did not handle this biblically, the Bible says she may separate if she does not remarry. Also it says the husband has to love his wife, and if he hits her we know he does not love her. He is disobedient to Christ who is to be the head of the marriage. These are things that people who say they are Christians should have been living by since the early church. But as you say, many take backward, simple path. It's an outrage that this man, who obviously had no self control with women and children, was allowed to stay in the church while this brave and long suffering woman was tested like an old newspaper.

this is a great example of why you should know scripture your self as well as seeking wisdom. The verse talking about a woman not leaving her husband has to go with Colossians 3:19, "Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them."
@KJ-lb4tj2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. The kind of husband a woman is to love is the kind that loves like Jesus loves, willing to die for her. Jesus does not hit, scream at, emotionally manipulate or lord it over anyone, let alone women. He did the exact opposite of what was culturally acceptable, he walked and talked with the culturally lowliest of women and invited them to follow him. Men who perpetually do not attempt to love like Jesus and do the opposite by abusing have long broken their marriage vows and there needs to be consequences if anyone has the chance of changing.

One of the first lessons we learnt in Marriage, Couples and Family Therapy was assessing for safety and safety planning. Its well a known and evidence based assertion that victims of abuse face the risk of escalated abuse and violence as a result of exposing their abuser. We always consider the risk of retaliation. Additionally, any licensed professional (and I believe ministers) are mandated reporters, meaning if you have proof or SUSPECT that anyone, especially children, the elderly and people with disabilities are at risk of harm and/or abuse you have to report to the authorities. Failure to do so has both legal and professional repercussions. Including being charged as an accessory in some jurisdictions. So, you can see why an organization with its own agendas would avoid consulting a licensed therapist. So disappointing when the church fails to protect those that need it the most. Instead they became an additional source of abuse.

Jesus said a lot of people would not make it. Paul says when a man says he is a brother, but it is abusive, do not even have lunch with him. We need to read carefully and keep considering what we've read, because many will not enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, "the way is narrow and few ever find it". This man John MacArthur, there are other incidents than this. And he has openly despised those who speak in tongues. He didn't read that part of the Bible, I guess. He sure read that God hates divorce. I keep hearing there is more bad stuff about this stupid pastor, things he's done, and I believe it.

Remember, ultimately we are all sinners and not perfect; that is why we follow the one true perfect example: Jesus! Others are merely expositors of the Word, they are to explain it, but they are not above God. If we (like many people have) put men on a pedestal, it becomes idolatry. I know this must be disheartening for you and I feel you 🥺🙏🏻 I pray that your anchor is always Christ and as we see our fellow brothers and sisters fall, we go to God in these times and understand that we are all prone to these things, but that we must also persevere in our understanding of God’s heart for mankind. I am so sorry Sarah. Some people are sick. Narcissists, sociopaths, pathological liars, etc. They have only evil in them. And they manipulate others around them. As someone who came from an abusive father in an dysfunctional home (I love me dad to death and completely forgive him). I know that when my mom divorced him it was for the best. There are emotions that come from abuse that are similar to the emotions that come from adultery (unfortunately my mom had to deal with both). People talk about the act of adultery without understanding why Jesus said what he said. When a husband abuses his wife it destroys the trust of a marriage. It is breaking the vows that were made before God. And the only way to heal from true abuse is by the power the Jesus. Without a repenting husband who pleads to God and his wife it is almost impossible to move forward in a marriage after abuse occurs. And even if he does ask for forgiveness it will take a miracle for that marriage to be healed. It was hard to listen to this because I have such mixed emotions when it comes to things that I’ve been through, but this was spot on my brother. thank you

Another HUGE red flag is that David TOLD them (the church and Eileen) that he had been sexually inappropriate with his children. He noted at the same time as confessing kicking the children and beating them in the head with toys, as well as whipping them with belts, that he was inappropriately dressed. What I pose is this - I know lots of families and they run about the house to get dressed in just their underwear, or to get in the shower. It's not inappropriate. So, David was either stating while he was beating the children, he was nude or *situationally* his level of clothing was gross towards children. I know this is very much a "hindsight" for probably most people, but it was a huge red flag for me as I first read The Roys Report on this. He told them, subtly.

As strong as John MacArthur has been in his hatred and ridicule for Charismatics, I can't but wonder if this happened by effectively pushing the Holy Spirit out of his church. If the elders had seriously prayed about what she said and let the Holy Spirit actually speak to them (something he is very much against), then I can't help but feel like this wouldn't have happened and appropriate action would have been taken to protect her and her children and to purge the evil from their midst.

For me, I always recall the scriptures that highlight God gave us a consciousness. There’s a degree of morals written on our heart that we know what is considered wrong and what’s considered right. Abuse falls under the category of violence. You don’t have to be a Christian to recognize violence is sinful. I would instinctively consider physical abuse as a spin-off of abandonment. That’s my honest belief, and if I’m wrong, then that’s between me and God. In summary, by no means do I support “submitting” to your marriage partner if there is physical abuse involved.

The most outrageous thing for me wasn't even the "be submissive to your husband" cuz i can see true well intentional believers missing this on this part. But 2 things that came after that were typical unbeliever behavior: 1- that they disciplined HER, the abused victim and let the perpetrator walk free. 2-And that AFTER they found out that he was guilty, they not only refused to apologize, but it seems some people called him out on that yet he stood his ground. I mean, JMAC ACTUALLY ACTED AS AN UNBELIEVER! The insistence for all this yrs since the guy was convicted, on not admitting a grave potential life costing sin that he commited was what outraged me the most and this is unbeliever type of behavior. He should publically apologize to her... i'll say it again, he should PUBLICALLY apologize! and then work to make up for the damage he's done to her (GCC in general actually). Although children were not involved, I have a somewhat similar story. I was severely emotionally abused and manipulated in my previous marriage, and it was starting to become physical. Towards the end, I was physically cornered and screamed at nose-to-nose. Pinched too. Every time we disagreed I’d be yelled at and told things like “this is why you have no friends” or “this is why you’ll never get anywhere in life”. I’d be in the bathroom for hours crying and praying that God would take my life because I didn’t think that divorce was an option. One day, during a fight, he told me to leave and go live with my parents. I had been praying for so long and took that as my way out. For about 6 months before that point, we had been going to “counseling” with our church. They basically would give him a slap on the wrist and tell him to stop. But it didn’t - it just got worse. Despite them knowing this and actually being involved, I underwent church discipline too. They told me I wasn’t allowed to make any final decisions about divorce unless they found grounds for it. They literally acted like this was the first time they were hearing about it and like they had control over me escaping my abuser! They even found out through my ex (who went through my mail) my new address in a new state and starting sending me church discipline letters! It was a really emotionally difficult time for me. I was getting messages from Christians I hadn’t even talked to in a long time about how I need to reunite with my abusive ex. They said really hurtful things, and when I told them they were hurting me more, they said “good”! I’m still not fully healed from this hurt after 4 years, but recently God has been helping me quite a bit. Reminds me of my own story! My husband hit me within the first 2 weeks of marriage and this continued for 2 years. I tried to leave and went to a woman’s refuge., the refuge was the only place that believed me. The Pastor of our church told me to move back into the family home and my husband would stay with him, after 2 weeks my husband moved back into the family home and the Pastor didn’t seem bothered at all. I lost my place at the refuge and endured another 12 months of hell on earth. Because I have depression and anxiety the Pastor and church didn’t believe me and I was told it was all in my head and I had a ‘distorted perception’. I was completely gas lighted and had no where to turn. Eventually the Lord provided me a way out. I still suffer to this day not only from the abuse from my husband, who has now been promoted in the church, but the way the church handled it was a disgrace!!!

Jesus talked about Synagogues of Satan, in Revelation. This is what he's talking about. There is all kinds of stuff going on behind the scenes in a lot of churches, probably most. I grew up Catholic, and also saw hell on Earth, experienced it. I can't even tell you. I of course wandered away from believing in God. But I believe now, and see that the Bible says to have nothing to do with this sort of person. Except to expose their evil deeds.

Hey Ruslan! I just want to say thank you for having and leading these conversations. There has been a missing space for Godly conversations in the ugly topics of abuse and harm in the body. I can say personally it’s been refreshing to finally hear a voice. A godly voice, a male godly voice speak out. As someone who peeps a lot there’s a temptation to ignore and stay silent or quiet in these situations. Thank you for speaking. It’s giving room to speak and seek out Justice in a Godly way. God knows that there’s a broken cycle he is cleaning out from his Bride. God bless y’all! This helps me act accordingly and not shrink back in my own community.

This is ENFURIATING. John MacArthur should be at the very least speaking out about this. The unfortunate fact is when a leader like him is implicated in things like this, it shakes ALOT of people's faith and trust in "Godly" leadership.

Please don’t leave out emotional abuse. After 5 years, he started giving me the silent treatment. He never laid a hand on me, but he badly bruised my heart. Now 40 years of marriage, with literally every other week in silence, it’s been 17 & 1/2 years in silence. Now I don’t even care anymore. I feel so differently about divorce. You know what’s horrible? It’s when we Christian women spout off-“I’ll never get a divorce. God hates divorce!” And abusive men hear that. And they abuse more AND REFUSE TO GET HELP. And blame you and call you abusive! Thank God I now know because of people like you and others who expose perpetrators. It won’t be pretty when these men and their “yes men” stand before God. I thank God so much that He’s helped me not to go insane! I’ve actually learned so much in that silence. I’ve learned to love God’s presence and my silent husband taught me to enjoy life without him!💚💜♥️💙💛

@CoCoFantastique2 жыл бұрын
She was talking about how abusive men respond to people saying "dont divorce" . She didnt say if she did or didnt divorce her husband. Instead of speaking out against the abuse your focus is "Not divorce" as if Abuse is not even a sin at all. A lot of men wont address emotional abuse because its so common and embedded in the christian marital culture they dont even see it as wrong at this point.

I used to cherish moments watching the late R.C Sproul of Ligonier Ministries as a younger Christian at lunchtime on TV. Big concepts, made easier to understand as they were explained so well and he had a warmth about him. It was like listening to a knowledgable, passionate uncle who loved the Lord. Now I see that the KZbin has John MacArthur on it and that is not for me. I wasn't surprised to hear that it may be the case that he allegedly did not take care of the woman in his congregation who was struggling and vulnerable because she was trying to protect her children. Whether you agree that women should speak in church or not, the way they did Beth Moore was embarrassing for our witness. Social abuses and the pain of oppressed people doesn't bother him either and in his bubble of impunity, can feel very 'Christian' about it, being applauded as a hero by other 'Christians'. MacArthur galvanised people to sign some statement against some kind of discussion somehow related to social fairness and justice in rewards to race. Lots of Pastors signed it. Contrast that with the leadership of MLK. He made a flippant joke about the "obese African American woman" in "The Shack" representing God but had no problem with God being represented as a European male all these centuries - no jokes about that- and was it necessary to mention that she was obese? Rather rude, rejecting and dismissive. MacArthur also seems to lacks empathy there too. I wouldn't be too under a shepherd who derrides my appearance, dismisses my womanhood, me being of African descent and if I was in the US would have no care nor response to my relatives being more likely to be incarcerated or shot. Not surprised if women's physical protection and respecting their personhood is not a priority too so that abuse of women and children is allegedly enabled there.. Wouldn't feel safe in that fold. Treated like a star, too serious for me, is unaware that he is not all Biblically pure in his teaching and ways, that he obviously has his own politics influencing his interpretations and is in danger of coming across is a pharisaical manner, saying "Thank God I'm not like this sinner or this woman, etc, etc and etc". I hope the lady can feel she did the right thing and was very Christian in getting her children away from a predator. May God bless them.

There's always been something about John Mccarthur that didn't sit right with me. I'm not calvinist, but I do like tough, sound teaching from them. Paul washer and Voddie Baucham are two of my favourites. It's not convicting teaching that I have a problem with, but John always seemed too depressing and negative. Some people are talking about calvinists being like him, I'd recommend you check out Paul washer. He's super convicting but also endlessly preaches the love of God and instructs husbands just as much if not more than wives.

I remember my step father, an unbeliever, was getting worse with his behavior--we discovered after his 3rd stroke, which caused his passing, that he was abusing cocaine per his doctors--and our pastor at that time told my Mom to submit to him. It is a perverse and unbilical perspective, but it consists in so many churches

That whole leadership needs to repent for the way that they treated this daughter of God! SMH and they are going to call her out but never does Mcarthur say what the husband did??? This is shameful. He is up there really manipulating the whole church and trying to manipulate this abused woman. This is disgusting. While he is pointing fingers, he needs to remember that he is held to a higher standard by God! I just can't. Husbands love your wives as Christ loved the church. This husband was none of that...none. He is a wolf!

This whole view of mental health and much of the church, is sick. God gave us His word (Bible) and His works (science) to deal with life. Both are permitted and both are necessary in the handling of mental health issues.

Thank you Ruslan for baring the truth for all to see! Pastors are human, and pride often blinds them when they have no real accountability. Who in the flock would dare stand up to their pastor when he is wrong. Not many. There must be accountability for truth to remain at the forefront.
