John Manages His Time Well | Standard Chess

In the Semi-Tarrasch-like structure that arises out of this English Opening (e4+d4 pawn duo for White, a+b queenside majority for Black), my opponent player has a solid yet passive position. I therefore avoid trades with an eye toward the thematic d4-d5 central pawn break. Good time management (yes, really!) and an errant Black knight on h5 soon leads to a golden opportunity.

I think the most valuable thing in watching these videos is seeing how you tackle the game analysis afterwards. Most times I just run a computer analysis and go over one or two mistakes or blunders - but starting with the opening explorer and going right into possible lines you were looking at during the actual looks immensely useful. Even when your opponent has a losing position it's good hearing your thought patterns on absolute best moves, for example the bishop sac on h6 after kg7 was something I'd probably (definitely) Miss in one of my games. Great vid John.

Threatening moves that offer trades once you have a material advantage is a main strategy in chess for sure! Once you have that advantage a good opponent should never trade when down so this allows you to bully them around the board with these types of moves. Of course they should be moves that give you a stronger position and force weaknesses etc... I know I’ve been super critical of the idea of trading down just for the sake of it. Only because strong grandmasters always stress this. “Getting lazy and simplification” doesn’t lead to becoming a better player! It kills the learning potential from games. You’re a great teacher John and a great chess player. Hope to see you really get to top level GM soon!

Just based on the title I get the sense that every time you're in time pressure you are hard on yourself but when you manage it well you speak of yourself in third person like that John is still alien to you :)

Interesting... John mentioned Vladimir Kramnik.. He often would go all in with d5 push which John does in this game.. BTW at 15:00...i was thinking B--b2.. Allow black to take and double pawns but they would control center and follow up with R--d6, double rooks etc.... Hit the love button JB

I guess he missed that Qg5+ also supports Rd8+ after black blocks with Qg6 (the point of Qe6). But yeah, missed a mating sequence. Edit: In fact after ...Qe6 white can play Rd8+! anyway, just realized.

Loll This is one of Johns only weaknesses! Once he wins the position on the board thinks about simplification instead of mate attacks. If he changed this he would be a very high level player!

Another great video John! I have a question. On move 16 you were considering Nc6. This looked to lose a pawn to me after Bxc6, Qxc6, Qxd4. Is this the case or am I missing some tactical idea? Or were you thinking about sacing the pawn and getting a rook to the 7th rank via d1 maybe?

Ok, it sounds like I need to learn about pawn mobility.

unclvinny. It’s not the pawn mobility it’s the tempi. Having this majority in the endgame is an advantage but in the middle game white doesn’t need to stop the pawns until they are way down the board. The moves required would allow free moves creating much bigger threats that black would have to respond to. So black wouldn’t get very far and likely lose the game in the process. It’s not that black couldn’t find a way to make it work it depends on what’s going on elsewhere. The key idea here is if they did start advancing to basically ignore it and make better threats. You should really only respond to your opponents moves if they are actually threats. Beginners often just respond to moves and not threats. This is a big mistake!

I think the speed with which Black re-took with 22... Qxb7 means they never saw 23. g4. When you played that immediately is when they suddenly felt the 600 point rating difference. Not dissing them (far stronger than me!) but things like this are part of the fun of watching.
