I think that as soon as the size of the church makes it cumbersome or logistically difficult to do the things that make it the church, it’s too big. The number of times I suggested “we should do communion more than every other month” and the answer I got was “no, it’s really hard to purchase/distribute the elements” told me that I was at a too-big church. That’s one metric, anyway.

I have experienced many things in life. I have been part of small churches and megachurches. I have lived in small towns and big cities. I have also been involved in many denominations and religions. And then I think to the tower of babel and what God did there. In the summary of all my experiences I believe we were meant to live in villages. It has been my experience that if you want to find real Christians who practiced Love One Another as Jesus commanded than you will find it in small towns. Get out of the BIG CIty. I currently live in a BIG CITY for job reasons and I can't wait to leave it. I have been in a BIG CITY for most of my life but I grew up in a small town. Christians in BIG Cities are not the same and I am very disheartened by the attitude that we show up to church for 1 hour and uh see ya next Sunday. No family at all. In small towns, that isn't so. Small town churches are more family and I believe church-wide worldwide that is what we are missing. We are not a very good family. Jesus says you will know who my disciples are by their love for one another. In BIG Cities, what it means to be a family is lost. That is why I feel we were meant to live in villages and that is why Christians are meant to be in small churches. Small groups in a big church helps but it's still not the same. ~300 I find is the perfect size and anything over ~500 is time for a split.

I think Dunbar‘s number is a helpful concept here. Look it up. It suggests that we are only cognitively able to have so many relationships, somewhere between 150 and 250 I think. To me, that suggests the maximum size of a church. When a church can no longer function as a family, then I’m skeptical about whether it is a church in the truest New Testament sense of the word.
