John Martyn is one of the greatest musicians ever. Virtuoso guitarist, incredible, soulful vocalist and he left a a body of work that rivals anyone. I am so sad I did not discover his genius until after his passing, but at least I have his music to listen to for the rest of my life.

i feel so lucky to have met him and Danny Thompson before they played at Cambridge Folk Festival, they both signed the cover of my Festival Guide. First heard him on an Aussie movie soundtrack in 1984 - 'In Search of Anna' and was blown away, couldn't wait for the film to finish so I could find out who the song was by!

Love the haunting guitar at the beginning-reminiscent of the sound of Paul Kossoff with whom John Martyn played a few concerts in the 1970s.Two sadly missed soulful musicians.
@davidleth1615 жыл бұрын
Have a listen to Paul Kossoff's 1973 album "Back Street Crawler". That haunting guitar is from a track on the album called "Time Away" it is co-written by John Martyn and Koss. John Martyn plays guitar on the track with Tetsu on bass & Simon Kirke on drums. The expanded version of the album released in 2009 contains the original jam called 'Time Spent" a cool 38 minutes long, which "Time Away" was cut from. Very true 2 sadly missed musicians.

Paul gave John that Les Paul Gold Top he was playing here. I wonder what happend to it? John would'nt take it out on the road with him in the end for fear of it getting nicked as were some of his other guitars. The last time I saw him he was playing a sunburst Epiphone Les Paul. John was the best! full stop!

@joolz1967 Yep. Gerry Underwood - IMO the best sax player John had. I saw him in the Subterranean in London on the Cooltide-period tour - the interplay between Gerry's sax and John's guitar on the solos in "Angeline" was just inspired. To this day my dad and I talk about it - it was one of the greatest musical moments we've ever experienced. Was a great live period IMO.

What year was that? I saw him in 89, 90 and 95. Missed him in 87 because I had an accident that night and had to go to hospital. 90 was the best with full band. Much better than the Shaw Theatre video. Much heavier sound. It was at The Junction Cambridge which was kind of a dump then. Proper drummer. No drum machine. John had plenty of beers on hand. He got super emotional during Angeline. One of the gigs I'm glad I didn't miss.
