See, See there is no greatest guitar player. The best is always the last great guitar player you heard. How you feel, your tastes, your life experiences, their skills, fingers or picks, the song, the audience and God knows what else all affect what you're hearing. That being said put Coco up there with The Greatest.

I saw John Mayall at Slim's in San Francisco around 1990, and Coco Montoya was his guitarist then. I'd seen Coco playing with his own band at Larry Blake's in Berkeley a few times. Great show! Coco Montoya had no problem filling some very big shoes of his predecessors in the Bluesbreakers!

Coco remains on of the best players alive. Expressive and flawlessly smooth. A genuine feel for the blues. Fortunate to see him with Mayall and in his subsequent solo career. Deserving of much more acclaim than he's ever received.

John's a magnet for good guitar players and ole John's voice is still great at 70. Amazing some people lose a lot of their voice as they age. And Coco's one unique talent huh? Some rock and rollers look silly at 70 but not John must take good care of himself. Go one John we'll see ya at 80 (God willing). Peace

I saw Coco Montoya live a couple of times. He and his band pulled up in an RV to the club he was to play and was looking for parking. I'm amazed that he had travelled all the way to my town (Ottawa, Canada) in the middle of winter to play a small club. His band took a while to tune up but then they played a 90 minutes set non top. And what a fine guitarist he is. Love me some Coco. P.S. Thanks to John Mayall for showcasing so many talented guitarists.

Every time you see Coco play, he delivers it hot and soulful...he came to our small town, Danville, Va., and did a show and opened the show with one of the greatest, lyrical shuffles I have ever heard in my life and childrens, I've see about all of them.

WOW...what can you say after listening to that>???? I thought the guitar looked funny, so I checked, Wiki says "Montoya is left-handed but plays a left handed guitar with a right handed neck." He is certainly the best blues guitar player I have ever seen. But, let's not forget about Mayall! The man has been around for as long as I can remember, and he just gets better and better the older he gets! Think I will listen to it again...NOW!

Makes sense because that allows him to string it 'upside down', but with the strings going to the same tuners as a right hander and with nut cut correctly.

Posted elsewhere, but fits here better: Remember the first I saw Coco....sideman for Mayall. At one point before anyone had been introduced, Coco exploded with a solo that left the audience stunned. At the end of the song, instead of saying thank you during the applause, Mayall just answered the question we all had..."Ladies and gentlemen, his name is Coco Montoya." The place erupted. Great moment of Mayall pushing his players forward, and great showing by Montoya. All class.

Yes, Albert King being 1st to come to my mind, and on Bass, Gerald Johnson is another Monster Musician that plays 'upside down' w/big strings on bottom,(lower) & high small strings on Top. Gerald played/plays w/ Steve Miller, Crosby Stills Nash Young, tons of acts. Saw Coco yrs ago w Albert Collins, Albert said Coco was his ''right hand man'', Son like, it was obvious Albert thought highly of him. If memory serves correctly Coco was playing a Explorer (Gibson), or Destroyer (Ibanez), not exactly a ''go to'' Guitar for blues, but....
