My two cents on the reason for the controversy. For a lot of people PRS and Paul represent a beloved guitar brand which actually went up against the big two and created something, new even if it was inspired by a Gibson junior and a Strat body. With PRS announcements it has always been what is the next big thing rather than what vintage instrument they are redoing now. Paul says it himself in the Seattle clinic he does every year. The silver sky essentially breaks that promise. And then there are those who dislike PRS. But Paul has always managed to hit the sweet spot between building a good product and a great business. He understands the potential of a signature model like this. Dont blame the. guy
@flekkzo6 жыл бұрын
Ishan Roy I think you are on the money. This guitar just feels very very lazy to me. They could have made something a bit new, but this guitar is admitting that he wanted a Strat. I'm sure it's a great guitar, but finding a great guitar isn't hard.
@robertocorrea74916 жыл бұрын
You are right. I also think that part of the controversy is that PRS has marketed this guitar as something completely new, when it really isn’t. Of course there are subtle differences with a strat but they don’t justify Paul marketing the product this way. I saw an interview where he made fun of the vintage fender neck that has to be removed to adjust action which I think also made many people reject this product.

@Vichedges6 жыл бұрын
YOure exactly right, you just expect more from PRS than for them to copy a Strat. I mean I can’t stand how PRS guitars look. I think their fugly, but at least they are different. This is just a Fender Strat and they’re trying to convince everyone it’s something original. It’s absurd. It’s a Strat copy.

I think for the most part, the coolest thing is that no matter who seems to play this guitar into this amp, the tone IS John Mayer. He said to Paul "Build me an amp that sounds like all of my favorite amps in one amp" and he came up with the JMOD100. The John said to Paul "Build me a guitar that's my favorite vintage instruments combined into one guitar" and Paul gives him the Silver Sky. And this video demonstrated that the Silver Sky into the JMOD100 IS John Mayer's tone. What an incredible feat and PRS nailed it.

I was going to get in the debat and say that all those brands (plus Schecter, plus ESP/LTD/Edwards/Navigator, and so on) already do a lot of strat copies that look like more like a strat than this PRS and that in some cases are priced at as much as this PRS so why all the heat ? Can't figure this one out. My only problems with this guitar are : the fingerboard radius (I much prefer the 10" radius like on other PRS guitars) and the price... Not that it's too expensive BECAUSE FENDER DOES STRAT FOR THE SAME PRICE (and same kind of build quality) and it seems like a top quality guitar... But much in the sense "damn it I can't afford one please make a korean SE version" ;-) EDIT : oh and just in case, here is an example of the PRS SE EG guitar that is mentionned in the video (and I think it look kinda cool... Imagine an S2 version of this...^^) davesguitar.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/D09786C.jpg

Listen. At some point, we need to stop thinking so much and remember the bottom line: It’s a guitar, ya plicky-pluck on it and it makes neato sounds. There are many types and kinds and options and colours and some look similar and some look wild. Forget the politics and buy whatever you enjoy playing and don’t worry so much about what it is. Just remember WHY it is. Make the music with whatever speaks to you. I love strats. I didn’t even know I had such a deep love for them until just a few years ago and I’ve been playing for a quarter century. I also really like John Mayer’s style of playing. I’ve never really played many PRS guitars but I know they are quite good at making quality, detailed guitars. So I see this guitar as a marriage of several great things. Why complain? If ya don’t dig it, get a genuine strat and enjoy it. Some people would appreciate this guitar for what it is too. I just don’t understand why we bitch so much Lol. More options, more guitars, different takes on classic models, it’s all awesome!! We are in the golden age of guitar options!!
6 жыл бұрын
I’ve no idea why people are so “outraged” by the PRS Silver Sky and everyone avoiding the term “Strat” or Fender. PRS has a history in taking the Les Paul to a new more modern approach and they have been outrageously successful. Why not a Strat style guitar? Suhr doesn’t get the blowback PRS is getting. Fact is, Leo nailed it his first shot out of the box and everything since then have been variations on a theme. We have an entire industry using the term “S-type” with no blowback but come the day PRS does one, well then, it's the wrong day, the planets are not aligned, the entrails aren't favorable, we don't do STRATS!! I call BS. Good on them, go forth and serve the industry, Paul, and I think it’s great.

This video has changed my opinion on the guitar. Like most people i thought it was basically a strat with a prs neck but after hearing Pete and the captain describe the feel of the guitar and hearing it i now actually want one. The casual observer of Mayer wouldn’t know that he picked up the guitar because of hearing Texas flood at the age of 13. He grew up idolizing his blues heroes, namely Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert King, B.B. King, and Buddy Guy. He formed a band with his high school friends named Villanova Junction after the late Jimi Hendrix. He started off covering Jimi and Stevie and set out to be a blues guitarist like his heroes. I mean for god sakes his first tattoo was Stevie’s initials on his upper arm. Later on after dropping out of berklee and trying to make it on his own, he started experimenting with pop and found out that it was much easier to garner attention playing more “listenable” music for everyone. More people would without a doubt prefer listening to a pop song in this day and age then a typical blues guitar oriented song. So with that knowledge under his belt he made Room for Squares and the rest is history. Using his popularity and the platform that he created for himself after room for squares and heavier things, he began to drift back towards the music that had originally and always had inspired him as a mere teen with continuum, straight up blues. Nowadays he still hasn’t gone full on blues, but he has done numerous guitar driven performances on stage at various shows over the years, namely covers of SRV, Hendrix and Clapton. He’s done things on the where the light is live album that would blow your mind. He’s done a live blues album titled TRY that would once again show you what I’m talking about. The man has inducted SRV and Albert King into the rock and roll hall of fame because of how associated he is with them and has shared the stage with the likes of B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck among many others. There is a video interview done with Clapton that has him saying that John Mayer is a master guitarist. Not only that, Clapton has invited Mayer to his crossroads festival ever since Mayer became a popular artist. The fact that Mayer is so closely associated with blues and has never really done it full time and the fact that most people wouldn’t even know about any of what I just said above and still think he’s a great guitarist shows how talented he is. A guy like Joe Bonamassa who has based his entire career and livelihood off the Blues is not nearly as revered in the guitar community as Mayer is. John Mayer is one of the best guitarists of all time and easily the best we have today. Johns guitar tech who was also SRVs former guitar tech has stated that John is the closest thing we have to him.

@dwightlewis35196 жыл бұрын
orlock20 I'd argue for acoustic guitars, They kind of have to have similar shapes because if you mess with the shape too much, you'll end up changing the timbre and eventually end up with something that sounds nothing like an acoustic guitar.

Dwight Lewis, it'll only change what people expect from an acoustic guitar. There are triangle body acoustic guitars, besides the balalaika, for instance.

The PRS sounds fuller too compared to the Fender. Its got a lot more depth and low end compared to the thinner sound of the Fender. Its like listening to audio through an Soundbar compared to the flatscreen TV audio. The flatscreen sounds 'good' and more than adequate but then when you hear it through an external soundbar, you get a much fuller sound with more low end too.

Maybe it doesn't need to be said, but maybe it does: JM loves his 63 & 64 Fenders, but why take them on tour where they could be damaged or stolen? "Make me a touring guitar, Paul!" Done. If he asked Fender to do it, they'd be 4 grand minimum.

John’s been playing this thing at live for over 6 months. WELL over 6 months. So all the talk on the comments about “waited two years to see that it’s just a bloody strat”, means you were never ACTUALLY watching. Don’t like the guitar? Don’t get the guitar. Personally, i wish I had the money to buy one now, just because I’m a massive JM fan and would love a comfy strat-esque guitar to play. The most important thing here is this. The Silver Sky is John’s personal model. Not a new PRS “players choice” release. They’re releasing it, right now, at its high price point, for the people who want it. They’re not trying to convince anyone that it’s the direction they’re going in. TL;DR: Quit bitching, buy it or don’t buy it

I’m glad this “controversy” has mostly died, it was pretty ridiculous to begin with. That’s social media, though. Giving every moron with a cell phone a voice might not have been the best idea ever. It’s just a guitar. Buy it. Don’t buy it. Life is simple like that. These are the most common sense assessments I’ve heard online.

@yungstaben76754 жыл бұрын
zach it’s better than damn near every guitar I’ve ever owned or played, and I’m not even a fan of the artist apart from a couple of songs. Idgaf if it’s a knock off. It’s a banger of a guitar.
@12x2richter4 жыл бұрын
@@frunks6418 That's fair, but they're better at knocking off the best of Fender than Fender is. Like JM said "You know you can play a hundred classic 68 Fenders and find those 2 or 3 that are just magical? The Silver Sky is about making that 100 out of 100." As an owner of a Fender American Professional and a Silver Sky, it's no contest. The Silver Sky is better to play, to me, hands down.

Absolutely great video and I think you nailed it on the head that the "controversy" surrounding the guitar is pretty dumb. PRS didn't make a strat because they wanted to make a strat; they made a strat because John Mayer came to them and asked them to make a strat. All of the "improvements" or "changes" were because that's what John Mayer wanted. Paul might have made some suggestions here or there, but ultimately John said yeah or neah. But my God what a gorgeous sounding guitar. Though, I don't think I've ever heard Pete play a guitar and NOT think that...

Alex Marshall I just got my John Mayer flesh light actually. The price is a little higher than it should be for what it is but it gets the job done. But it is modeled after John Mayer himself so I can't complain. All in all I would highly recommend it to anyone interested for a solid fapping experience.

All the so-called "controversy" is lame. PRS came out with the McCarty 594, which is a SUPERB guitar and an obvious nod to late-50s LPs, and didn't get this kind of blow-back. Lee and Pete have it exactly right...PRS did a great job building a guitar spec'd to John Mayer's requirements. This guitar is...again...an obvious nod to mid-60s Strats. Who cares? How many other manufacturers make strat copies? How many boutique shops? How much would Fender Custom Shop charge for a guitar like this? How many legit professionals play clones? All the haters and trolls need to crawl back under their rocks and shut up. This is a great guitar for the price.

Yeah people seem or rather, choose to forget there aren't really any original designs anymore, almost every company has copied another company in some degree or other.

Alright, so it's a PRS Strat, a slight refinement pf the most imitated guitar in the world (along wtth the Les Paul) and I feel fine. Chill.
@Aus10gloe5 жыл бұрын
I think that professional players enjoy this. The controversy comes from people that feel entitled to what is allowed in the guitar community (usually the person that plays for a hobby). The true grit working musician is always excited to see new and improved versions of what we use everyday (hence why we aren't cutting tape everyday to make records). Great guitar, these feel incredible. Ignore the fact that JOHN MAYER helped design this and enjoy a master-built strat that is FUN to play. Great playing fellas, I love the channel! Cheers

So people are angry at Mayer for leaving Fender. The same company who bought Gretsch and started swapping mahogany bodies for basswood ones on lower end models while charging the same price. They deserve no loyalty for that. Don't get me wrong I love Fender guitars but to bang on about loyalty to a corporation is just daft.

So, keeping any controversy out...there a couple subtleties I noticed. You can talk tone, you can talk sustain all day long and people would have very different and distinct opinions. My biggest observation is the reactions of the players. As someone who has played guitars for almost 50 years with many variations of instruments, pedals and amps, the one key element is how those combinations inspire you. Everyone that touched that guitar lit up. Their playing was better. We can all play the same notes...it’s the HOW you play those notes that differentiates us. I noticed a marked difference when the PRS was in hand. The guys played better with the PRS. You can tell by what they played. They were more expressive...and that’s the whole point. It doesn’t matter who’s name is on it. Put a blindfold on and LISTEN. Regardless, great demo. One of the few times I would consider a guitar based on viewing something on KZbin. :)
