Set your amp as clean as possible (dial in some reverb), overdrive pedal (tube screamer), clean boost pedal (katana), analog delay pedal is a must. Those are definite keys to the tone you could perfect it if you want but it’s mostly in the fingers

I've never thought about doing it this way. I always got the third hit of the triplet with my thumb hitting the muted A string instead of my pointer on the D string. Cool to see people playing it different ways

This is wholly incorrect. He doesn’t play the triplet with the multiple fingers, it’s almost entirely a thumb rake following the slap and then he plays the chord. Your way may be easier to pick up, but calling it “John Mayer’s mysterious neon shuffle technique” when you’re not even doing the correct technique is frustrating. Also, why would you not play this on an acoustic?

Great video! However one thing to note is that Mayer actually doesn't actually swing his eighth notes in the beginning and plays it straight, and start swinging in the second half to emphasize those slap triplets. An absolutely dirty groove
