You buy an amp to be clean, a guitar to push it to distort, then buy hotter pickups to make it push the amp harder, etc spending all this money to get it to do such, then you turn around and buy compressors and amp simulators to clean it all up to try to get that vintage clean amp sound that you had before you started. Lol. Then you end up buying all of the effects pedals and end up using a modeling amp for all your effects. I know I’m exaggerating but some of the best records tones of all times were just a guitar plugged into an amp with a studio mic on it. I’m guilty of buying pedals and processors too, but have recently bout a katana amp and has enough power and great clean sounds as well as tube type distortion sounds and all the effects I need right at hand that I need that I can grab my guitar and katana and play a gig anywhere.

Round Baby johns effects are pretty basic. He hardly uses more than an overdrive, a clean boost, delay, and reverb. The rest are for rare occasions. He just likes to have them available

Nah, all those guys are playing with in-ear monitors. Basically noise canceling headphones, blocking out everything in the room/arena and lets them only hear what's mic'ed up at whatever level they want.
