On Mayer's Berklee Clinic he said ''the public is about 300 million times smarter than you.'' He should recognize the fact that the fans love this song and since we're about 300 million times smarter than him, he should do everyone a favor and just put it on Born and Raised. Thumbs up if you agree !!!

In Your Atmosphere, The Hurt, Taking on Water, Sucker, Everything You'll Ever Be, Over and Over, Blue Skies at Night, and many more of these unreleased versions have their place and magic of not being recorded. As much as we would love the studio version, the fact that they aren't recorded makes them extra special.

This John's most potent song in my opinion. It's so poignant that it reminds me of Cat Stevens at his best. A song that seems to express the secret sadness and hope of our generation.

I was at this show. This was my favourite unreleased JM song, and I certainly didn't expect it to be played here. When he launched into it, i got chills, and by the time it was done I was choking back tears.

thanks for the upload. i personally think this is his best song lyrically and maybe he felt the song was too basic in structure and sound but for me its all about the lyrics. would love a good quality recording on streaming services but uploads like this are amazing so appreciate you recording this

maybe in a little bit, John will make a little collection of these songs. I don't even want them produced/full band, just a one take with him and his guitar.

This would fit perfectly in Battle Studies, he must have had a big reason to let this one out.

The idea of this song would not fit in the Battlestudied series!

Just personal opinion, but I think it fits more in continuum album. Cuz it feels so much like gravity and the heart of life.

love this song! I don't think I'd ever want it on a record though... this along with songs like "The Hurt" and "Man on the Side" I see as songs for the "real fans... " ones that are out there, but you only really know about 'em if you delve deeeep into the Mayer catalog... Also, this is one of the first times I've noticed him not using the "thumb over the neck" technique... interesting...

On a sailboat I am slowly floating nowhere Lost the memories of where I am and why Black ocean churning a million stars are burning planetariums were right about the sky Once upon the day I set off on the journey Wishing on the wind take me far from home Now I'm on the waves And I'm taking on water, hard to see, I won't always be alone There was a time when August sun was high and centered on me but it dipped behind my back and settled down Used to square up to the land, used to size it in my hand but it fell behind the line that meets the sky Once upon the day I pushed off on the journey Wishing on the wind to take me far from home Now I'm on the waves And I'm taking on water, hard to see, I won't always be alone Inside this storm whipping in the wind my sail is torn In other words, the ends are never not my own Hard to see I won't always be alone On a sailboat I am slowly floating nowhere Hoping someday I wash up on someone elses shore...

he always uses the thumb over the neck, thats why i started doing it , to get his style and chord voicings, mostly drop 2 voicings. its a hugre part of his song, rarely eevery plays full chords.

@TheAdrinGold I actually don't agree. :) I've seen it happen so many times before - putting something this precious on a record will ruin it's magic.

Doesn't really fit in with the Battle Studies "heartbreak handbook" style I think. It should be on record somewhere though, I totally agree with that. One of my favourite JM songs, it's so pure and honest.
