This is a rerun of 20-year Indo-Soviet Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation signed in 1971 when India was under the threat of attack from the United States. The US had sent the Seventh Fleet to Bay of Bengal positioning it to start bombing Calcutta/Dacca. But the Indo-USSR cooperation scared the hell out of Nixon and Kissinger. Iranians have read the history very well and are now taking similar steps to protect them.

NIXON ONLY ORDERED THE 7th FLEET WHICH DID NOT REACH IN TIME, WAR WAS OVER BY THEN, BUT THEIR NUCLEAR SUBMARINE REACHED SOMEWHERE AREOUND VIZAG CITY... STILL SOME 700 MILES TO CALCUTTA...AND RUSSIANS SANK IT... I GUESS, AMERICANS WERE TAKEN BY SURPRISE, BUT INDIAN NAVY TOOK THE CREDIT.. THEY EVEN JOKED THEY USED FISHING VESSELS TO GO NEAR TO DROP DEPTH CHARGES.. SO THAT AMERICAN SUBMARINE WAS TAKEN BY SURPRISE...

That is a totally simplistic analogy. There’s a lot more mutuality and reciprocity in this deal and Iran is relatively a lot more means important for Russia today. It’s not just about the military and security integration of the two but major eventual economic transformations regionally and globally via the north-south trade corridor.

Iran wants peace and prefers not to have weapons of mass destruction because it goes against the dictates of Islam. Not enough space here but the USA provided the path for Israel to obtain nuclear weapons. IRAN also signed the Nonproliferation Treaty which allows them the use of Nuclear power & nuclear medicine. Israel refused to sign the treaty.

@@alecfoster4413 The UK cannot deploy a brigade for sustained operations. We had a composite < - 2 brigade formation for the largest combat deployment in Afghanistan. They were withdrawn in 2014. Britain had to maintain about 1000 for Op Toral. It was a massive relief because squaddies who had been treated like $hit quickly got out. So, in the last 7 years of Afghanistan, our largest commitment, not so great Britain could muster between 20-40% of a brigade at best. For short term, Britain could put a two brigades in but without having any reserves, training capacity or forces to send anywhere else. Decades of mismanagement, penny pinching and changing expected terms of service has whittled a once proud army to barely a defence force incapable of protecting the shores and airspace of Britain. Starmer et al would be fools to commit the army to anything. They need time to create a new vision, recruit, train and inspire. It will take years, a postive role model and a LOT of money. Don't threaten China, but compete with China cohering to international trade laws. Compete with China by not threatening your allies, but embracing them warmly as economic partners. Stop treating your friends like dirt. The combined population of Europe, Japan, SK, Taiwan and other friendly states rival the population of China. Come up with an economic plan to jumpstart the economies of the Western economic block based on manufacturing, on-shoring, and cooperative development interblock development. At the same time, open trade with Russia and Iran and lower the price of fuel and energy. Reject the ideology of neoliberalism and asset price inflation. Bring back jobs and manufacturing. Cut waste in government and the MIC. Lower inflated costs across the board.

Firstly, it can bring other atomic powers from the west into the region, more intensely Second, Iran has switched between various powers for the past 300 years or so, since they became the customer of western warfare technology. It is possible that they get the nuke today on the Russian side but change sides later against Russia. Third, Russia can act as godfather to Iran while Iran has no atomic bomb and Russia feels stronger and having the upper hand in their regional deals with Iran. If Iran has the nuke, Russia won't have the upper hand anymore to tip the scale on their side.

Because Iran has more reason to use them than anyone else, Iran has the front row seat watching everything happened around them. A reminder, we lost our proxy war against them using Iraq. After WW2, there is only one group that has been targeted, with over 2m death, 10m displaced, 4+ countries destroyed and their resources taken, Muslims. Iran has enough reason to push the red button than anyone else, unlike the bs why are muslims in Europe, why didn't they went to another Islamic country? They can say that because they don't care about reality, Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan, Yemen, Emirates, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and etc, they have too many refugees, they literally can't support them. Turkey is lucky they can depend on EU to provide some help, but after the latest earthquake, pretty much they are put of options and desperate as well. Imagine if France gets decimated and over 50m displaced? 10m in Italy/Greece, 10m in Germany, 10m in Switzerland/Austria, 10m in Spain/Portugal, 10m others. Now imagine, Germany, Italy and Austria as well, they wouldn't have the economy to support them. We barely took a few compared to real numbers and we are complaining. Imagine how many Egypt took, from Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, Iraq, Syria and Eritrea? All this, in front of Iran, no one has better reason to pull the trigger, since 1960s to 2025, front row seat to all the horror. Reminders year after year for over 60 years. Yes, no one in the west should be happy Iran having nukes.

I definitely defer to Professor Mearsheimer’s breadth of knowledge and insight. On the matter of the term ‘neoconservative’ and a lot of confusion over it: Whether one could say Marco Rubio is ‘neoconservative’ as an individual may be the case or not - that’s not the issue. The problem is, even with independent commentators- I’m still seeing ‘neoconservative’ being used to mean the opposite of ‘neoliberal’ - as if one is the philosophy of Republicans and the other the philosophy of Democrats. This is where experts can come in, defining the two terms in context to the the past 40 years. That ‘neoliberalism’ is the overarching paradigm that allows the different political viewpoints that form the American ‘democratic’ political spectrum. But which also is the basis for American military interventionist hegemony. Neoconservatism is part and parcel of that overarching paradigm. It is a subset of it. And, it’s not a matter of one certain group at a particular time - like a cohort of political operatives with a team name. It did not die with Wolfowitz and the “known unknowns” piece of work guy. It lives on in our foreign policy. There’s no way to make the case that Biden’s approach to Ukraine is not neoconservative. It’s a completely torn out of the neocon playbook. I’d argue that Netanyahu’s sleight-of-hand acceptance/nonacceptance of ceasefires is the same. It’s always a gaslight approach of break the agreements and then pretend it’s Hamas. It’s always the lie that Hamas adds last-minute terms Israel can not accept. Which is happening as we speak. That’s creating crisis to seize upon as an opportunity to advance interests. I just do not see why the need to limit the use of the term - when it is still entirely relevant today in the US conduct of foreign affairs. What is necessary is the need to help the public understand exactly what neoconservativism is and how it affects our nation’s direction. Which leads back to Rubio. You can not be a belligerent warmonger in US government and escape the tracks laid for you to run on. It is definitely the philosophy of the ‘deep state’ and why we are condemned to it. What other philosophical mindset underpins warhawks, Democrats or Republicans? If there is another school of thought (and I’m not talking authentic, reasonable national degense) - what is that element?

I see things the same way as your guest, with the exception that he sees it necessary to "contain" China. It is Europe and America who are the "expanders" of empire. Historically, China has not done that since Kublai Khan. The desire of China to have Taiwan to become a part of China again is not a threat to America or the region

If I was an Israeli citizen I would seriously think before going to bed that Israel do not have any friends around it boarders. The size of the state of Israel just make it unsafe regardless who got their back. Just recently Iran and Yemen had demonstrated their ability to hit Israel. The recent butchering of Palestinians in Gaza didn't go well with the world community either. I hope Israel can learn to coexist peacefully with everyone.

This is 1940 and there were no artillery shells then either. The good news then was the Japanese had lots of shells but they were making them and their helmets out of US scrap metal.

Bonjour. 2:20 : Ensuring that Iran does not acquire nuclear deterrence is as easy for Russia as it is for anyone else: hasn't Iran officially declared that it has no interest in nuclear deterrence, as it is costly, dangerous, ineffective and obsolete? 2:53 : It would be very surprising if the Russians thought that Washington would gain anything from sacking Iran. Maybe Washington, but certainly not Moscow, which has a head start. As elsewhere, and for too long, the USA would only be sinking once again towards its own ruin: a documented fact that we all objectively see as an international paradigm shift underway and that Mr. Mearsheimer seems to be omitting here. 3:40 : The rapprochement between Russia and Iran is certainly not "directed against the United States". These two nations have many other interesting challenges to face, and have no use for American narcissism. On the contrary, of course, if they can, in the process, help the United States avoid repeating its mistakes, so much the better! 20'30 : Poor Mr. Rubbio is trying to keep a straight face while he still can ! What will he do in court when the Russian Fédération shows him the bill for war indemnities ? Let's bet he'll turn to Mr Rutte and bang his fist on the table ! 22'24 : Putin explicitly stated what were the indisputable preliminary points to any opening of negotiations, not to a... peace agreement. A peace agreement is only possible if these preconditions for negotiation are observed. Nuance... 23:10 : There's nothing to say that Moscow couldn't make the world understand that Washington has lost the war without making Trump lose face. Courage, Trump, against your well-known enemies on the inside ! 51:25 : No. An intelligent alliance with your allies would benefit from an intelligent relationship with your competitor, and an intelligent relationship with your competitor would benefit from a policy that would favor its development, which would favor the development of your allies, which would favor yours. 54:24 : Haaretz, Feb. 24, 2020 : "Mossad Chief Yossi Cohen visited Doha on February 5 in order to ensure Qatar continues its financial aid policy to the Hamas-controlled Gaza." This financial aid, this 710 and this cease-fire are the same bloody "revisionist" calculation. An old story. Thks a lot.

All this emphasis on Iranian nukes is misplaced. This discussion is a waste of time. The Russian-Iranian agreement is mostly economic and financial. Even the CIA repeated several days ago that Iran has no nuclear weapons program.

Prof Mearsheimer, I think your choice of terminology needs to be reconsidered. When you say that America should do everything it can to ‘hinder’ Chinese technological advancement, you should be saying outcompete. If America is a true free market proponent, it should first and foremost focus on competition not obstruction or hinderance.. otherwise it will remain the belligerent state and bully you acknowledge it is.. and then no one wants to deal with it so it backfires.
