This is from a very underrated album and has several hidden gems. “This Time” and “Don’t Miss Understand Me” are great songs.

John's style of singing or genre is called heartland rock as he sang a lot about blue-collar, farmers & truckers themes. You've done quite a few of his songs. John has had so many hits especially in the 80's such as "Crumblin' Down", "Lonely Ol' Night", "Small Town", "R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A.", "Paper In Fire", "Wild Night" etc.

my favourite john cougar song, as he'd been told to change his name to secure a label contract back then. though he wrote this song it wasn't the type of music he wanted to do but i love it lol. with success he would go by john cougar mellencamp and eventually john mellencamp. i also love his "i need a lover", along with the great cover by pat benatar. p.s. i met john decades ago and he was a nice, quiet, polite guy.

I agree with BJ, he’s saying in the song she has her hands in his back pockets and he can feel the heat of her frustration because he’s not making a move on her but he’s not sure what to do and she says that’s alright, hold tight and he says well alright, hold tight and then later he’s saying it’s time to go home but I’m not even done with the night. By this time I think he and his girl are getting into it, he’s figuring out what to do but now it’s time to go home and he’s like I’m not even done with the night yet, we’re just getting started. Sounds like the first time for both of them; hugging, kissing and so forth if you get my drift and he’s nervous and not sure what to do or if he’s doing it right.

Johnny Cougar was a stage name early on and John Mellencamp was after he was famous he could be himself imo. The next song should be Walls Come Tumbling Down with the video.
