He is so right! Grew up in 80's in Texas. I played outside from morning until sundown. Drank water from the hose. Oh, and the sleep after a long day playing in the sprinklers. I slept so deeply, and yet, excited about waking up the the next day. And this song, "Cherry Bomb" was always playing on the radio all the time.

I was born in 63. Growing up we had 1 TV and us kids WERE the remote control and the ones who went outside to turn the antenna if one of the 3 or 4 stations was a little fuzzy! Much of the time was spent outside playing with our siblings, and friends. Headphones was on my granddaughters school supply list and she is just in kindergarten. It saddens me that they are put in front of screens at such a young age. How do you learn to socialize if you're constantly alone with a screen!

Dominique you did a great job of explaining what it was like to live back in the older days. This was my high school days and everything was so much simpler. No cell phones no computer no video game. Kids spent time with their friends and going to the drive in movies and not sitting in front of a phone screen or computer and TV. I definitely long for those days. I grew up in the early to mid '70s. My kids grew up 20 years later, just a block from my childhood home. Things really changed in that 20 years. I had lots of friends to play with and we DID, all the time. Then people stopped having multiple children. My kids grew up with just two friends to play with. I think if they could have experienced both their and my childhoods, they would have picked mine as the better. As far as music goes, I always thought "my" era, the '80s was the best but I knew that I was biased. I have since seen young people on KZbin saying the same thing so maybe I'm right!

Andre and Domenica, you are both correct. It’s true that each generation looks back on a simpler time when they get old, and in a sense, it always was. But to Andre’s point, us baby boomers were the last kids to grow up without computers and the internet. They were game changers. So, in a very real sense, we’ve lost a certain innocence in our youth we will never recover. But at least we’ll always have ice cream.

Such a great song. One that you can relate to regardless of which era you grew up in. Cherry Bomb can mean something as simple as the literal “firecracker”, or something more, a loss of innocence or virginity. BTW, once again, Mellencamp made a conscious choice to show a black man dancing with a white woman in the video, depicted in an era where that was risqué. Good on him, always trying to show that he rejected bigotry.

Being a teen from the sixties and embracing the hippie life with long hair and jeans and tie dye shirts , the adults in my life thought I was an idiot and weird just as adults today say the same thing about the teens of today . Life to me at that age was scary and not more simple .It was filled with the Vietnam war and the threat of nuclear destruction . Racism and misogyny was rampant .Life to us back then was just as screwed up and crazy as people think today .

Another great song by JM. I'm an old man, mostly grew up in small town Kansas in the '60s and '70s. I look at this generation and it saddens me to my core. They lack the ability for rational, critical thinking. Morality and ethics are not a part of who they are. When your only comfort is knowing you won't be around to witness the full devastation that Gen Z and Gen A will inflict upon the world, it's a bad day. Those of us who grew up in better times look around today and know that we were blessed. Thank You, Father.
