Check out John Mellencamp's first top forty hit in the U.S. "I Need A Lover" from 1979. That was back when he went by the stage name John Cougar. The song has a really long intro that jams hard, plus plenty of flashy guitar riffs.

Sometimes music has to grow on you, but for me, that was never the case with John Mellencamp. So many of his songs I loved from the first listen. This was one of them. I would have been 12 when this came out, and was already a fan of his American Fool album.

John is all about that Americana feel, but he’s a full blown rocker, make no mistake. Try R.O.C.K in the USA and the authority song. The look was kinda in at the time, but yeah, he definitely had that look going on. Probably inspired by MJ. It was definitely popular at that time.

Per Songfacts Mellencamp describes this as a "political song." He told Rolling Stone in 2013: "Reagan was president - he was deregulating everything and the walls were crumbling down on the poor. The song was the last one recorded and the first single. It was a hit immediately. I felt like I was pulling the wool over everyone's eyes."

@harlowrioux5790
@harlowrioux5790 Ай бұрын
Those are penny loafers which are popular in the Midwest. His hero musically is James Brown, John was doing those dance moves years before Michael Jackson. That's just how he's always done it. Lots of energy, lots of uninhibited dancing. Lots of energy and a whole lot of talent. A few years after this song came out John changed his sound. Reflecting a 'Ameriana' feel complete with fiddle, accordion, mandolins, Dobro and eventually rap was incorporated into that feel. With his incredible keyboard player breaking out new lyrics to mesh with the original. John e4njoys experimenting with the meshing of genres that people assume won't work together. John's feelings about that is folk, country, rap and blues are, in fact, all related as each is a form of storytelling.

Little known fact about John - was born with a rare disease for the times... had no idea he was born with spina bifida until he discovered a scar on the back of his neck around the age of 9 or 10, according to CBS News. As it turned out, the legendary performer from Seymour, Indiana, was given an experimental operation as an infant that saved his life at a time when most babies born with the birth defect didn’t survive. The 18-hour-long procedure that took place in 1951 was one of three operations on babies with spina bifida at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. Mellencamp is the only survivor of the three. The unlikely success of his operation left Mellencamp with a feeling of luck that’s followed him his whole life, according to his interview in Men’s Journal. He told the magazine: My grandmother told me for my entire life - everyday, “John, you’re the luckiest boy in the world.” And when you hear that everyday from somebody you actually start to believe it, which made me adventurous, which made me not afraid to try things, which made me not care about stopping myself from doing things that people said you shouldn’t be doing. Recently, John met the neurosurgeon who performed the pioneering operation on him nearly 63 years ago, according to CBS News. Dr. Robert Heimburger, 97, met him at the hospital where the surgery took place. themighty.com/topic/spina-bifida/john-mellencamp-opens-up-about-finding-the-man-responsible-for-saving-his-life

Melloncamp grew up In Seymour Indiana - about 40 miles North of my home town, Salem. In the Video for "Hurts So Good" - I'm pretty sure he's at the Blue Bird Cafe ("Best Bar, Bar None") In Vallonia - about midway between his town and mine - a bar i have crawled out of more than once, in my misspent youth [*] - when he hit big. And the winding hwy he's riding on looks a lot like hwy 135 between Vallonia and Salem - that I've ridden many times. [*] - I used to be God's gift to drunk women .....

Btw, the parking meters in a line are a nod to a similar scene in the movie Cool Hand Luke. I won't spoil why if anyone hasn't seen that, but they should. Excellent flick. It seems like to me, Mellencamp then wanted to be part Stones, part Woody Guthrie. But those are pretty great folks to try to emulate or be influenced by. He referred to the Stones on some liner notes on one of his albums from around then. I loved this song, and Mellencamp around this time, and going into his roots stuff right after. I lost track, so not as familiar after Big Daddy, but I loved his stuff from this period, probably from Uh-huh to Bid Daddy. Was really great, not just good.

Everyone at the time was competing with MJ with their videos so it was probably in there somewhere. But we were all wearing penny loafers and slouch socks just then. Fashions were much more universal and we all dressed like someone on TV. It wasn't as much about being able to afford fancy clothes. It was just going to the mall or Kmart and coming up with your own version of what you saw on Mtv, "Dynasty", "Miami Vice", etc.

I love the singers that didn't need autotune to be good...imo You might want to listen to the Johnny and Edgar Winter group "Tobacco Road" live version, one of the top vocal performances I've ever heard, I've heard a few at 65...
