This was the first single from Mellencamp's ninth album, The Lonesome Jubilee. Like many songs on the album, it deals with social inequality and the disparity of wealth in America. The "paper in fire" represents the dreams that disappear when Americans are hit with the harsh realities that destroy them.

No wonder Mellencamp is a Democrat. Only Republicans want to line the pockets of the rich and refuse to help real Americans.

Mellencamp made a big deal about people knowing this video was shot on one of the poorest streets in the entire country in Savannah, Georgia back in 1987-88. He actually used the real citizens of the neighborhood in the video because he wanted to show poverty in America to go along with the social commentary in the song.

Lex, that instrument you were inquiring about is called a dobro, which is an acoustic guitar that has a metallic "resonator plate" (the metal plate near the sound hole on the top) that is generally played on the lap and the strings are played with a slide.

the instrument is a 'resonator' guitar, he's just playing slide the old delta 'coke bottle' style. Everybody from Mark Knopfler of Dire Straights to Jimmy Page and even Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains have used them to some effect but if you want to hear it in all it's glory i'd recommend 'The Man's Too Strong' by Dire Straights. His fancy National brand resonator is on the cover. You can hear one amplified on Paul Simon's "Graceland". "the Mississippi Delta was shining like a National guitar..." the song is a strong recommend along with the album in it's entirety but this song specifically highlights the guitar.

They're also often called Dobros, after the Slovak 'Do'pyera 'bro'thers that first made them in Eastern Europe. They used that name because it meant 'positive' or 'good' in their native language. They were trying to amplify volume on accoustic guitars and stumbled into the sound. The story when I lived in Eastern Europe is that they started by cutting one of their baker-Dad's metal pie plates into their guitar and it went from there, but so far I haven't found conclusive evidence of the pie plate start. But the brothers can take credit for patenting the first resonator.

@@onsesejoo2605 Yeah, a Coke bottle's neck isn't shaped right for a slide; the older style was old glass Coricidin bottles or a neck of a bottle that's long, straight & wide enough to put over a finger without discomfort.

There is a cool little cafe where I live called "Bon Temps", and they have a seafood boil on the menu for groups, where they cover your table with brown paper, and spread out a big pot of seafood to hand pick through. This song definately gives me those same small town lousiana vibes. The first time I ate there, I had their dish called "The Firestarter", three big pieces of chicken, fried in a cajun spice sauce, skewered on top of a thick waffle, with shredded pickles, bbq burnt corn on the cob, and a side of syrup to drizzle over the entire dish.... literally my favorite food I've ever eaten in my life.

The instrument in question is a resonator(most likely a dobro) played lap style. The guitar has one or more cones (speaker) inside the guitar body. He's playing it with a metal bar laid across the stings. Similar to bottleneck slide but a different style. It's really popular in country music.

That instrument that you guys were asking about is called a Resonator guitar (or steel guitar). They come in all sorts of specs. Sometimes the body is made out wood or all steel, sometimes the neck profile is rounded (like what you'd find on most common guitars), sometimes the neck profile is square which means you would have to play it while it's sitting on your lap because the guitar would be impossible to fret and that's called Lap Steel. You can play Lap Steel with a rounded or square profile Resonator and people generally play it with a slide like this video but one thing they all have in common is the speakers inside the guitar which gives them resonance (hence the name) and also gives it a unique sound. Production of these guitars started in the 1920s. When Big Band music was popular, guitarists got lost in the mix (pre amplifier) so they needed a way to get guitars to project more. It's mainly used in blues music but became obsolete in the 1950s once the electric guitar was invented. Since then, It's been more of a textured instrument. Keith Richards and Tyler Bryant are great Steel Guitar players and 2 songs I'd recommend that feature this kind of guitar are "You Got The Silver" by The Rolling Stones and "Ramblin' Bones" by Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown

The instrument was a Dobro guitar being played like a flat top Jeff Healey style. It was a staple with the Blues guitar players ..Lynyrd Skynyrd references it in the. song Curtis Lowe.

Roots Rock!! JM used alot of guitar, accordian, violin/fiddle in his music starting with his mid 80s album Scarecrow ("Small Town", "R.O.C.K in the USA", etc..)....all recorded in his own studio in the middle of the Southern Indiana hills...

You should hear "Rain on the Scarecrow." It is a great song. In spite of his money and fame, he moved back to his hometown in Iowa. That was a dobro guitar.

"What is that instrument?" I believe that's a steel guitar played using a steel bar or "slide". Also, the instruments making that sound Lex was talking about were an accordian and a violin (that the woman was playing).

It's a resonator guitar. Popular brand of these is Dobro, which ppl refer to them by the brand name sometimes.

Y'all really like John. That's cool, everybody likes John. I think he might be the one Bob Seger sang about in Hollywood Nights.
