John Mellencamp official bio:
John Mellencamp's music career has spanned more than 35 years during which time he transitioned from pre-fab pop idol to one of the most highly regarded mature songwriters of a generation. Mellencamp fell in love with music at an early age and was fronting a soul band in his native Indiana by the time he was 14. He would go on to release 26 albums with domestic sales exceeding 40 million units.
He has been nominated for 13 Grammys, was recipient of Billboard's Century Award, ASCAP Foundation's Champion Award, The Woody Guthrie Award, Q's Classic Songwriter Award and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Mellencamp has amassed 22 Top 40 hits and holds the record for the most tracks by a solo artist to hit #1 on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks Chart. The social activism reflected in his songs was one of the key catalysts that launched Farm Aid, the concert series and organization that has addressed the struggle of American family farmers for more than 25 years.
A career landmark occurred on March 10, 2008, when John was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame by Billy Joel at the annual induction ceremony in New York City. He hardly rested on his laurels with the release of Life, Death, Live and Freedom (an acclaimed live disc containing most of the songs from Life, Death, Love, and Freedom), and John's participation in a 2009 summer-long tour with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson.
Meanwhile, John continues to focus on another facet of his artistic expression: painting. He first came to New York in the 1970 with the intention of studying painting if his music career aspirations didn't pan out but started painting in earnest in the 1980's as a way to be creative in a more self-contained manner. His style has evolved over the years as evidenced by several gallery shows and published portfolios, and in recent years he has increased his output by completing over 100 new works.
John Mellencamp continues to live and work in Bloomington, Indiana. He is the father of two sons, Hud and Speck and three daughters, Michelle, Teddi Jo and Justice.

Thanks for watching my video. I gathered all the songs I shot at this show in a KZbin playlist: kzbin.info/aero/PLwdc0qZNx0tYYEMRvnMUfRVESRpFcgVGT. The songs are: Paper In Fire, Small Town, Hey God (new song), Check It Out, The Eyes Of Portland (new song), Longest Days, Jack & Diane, Gloria (Van Morrison cover), Pink Houses, Cherry Bomb, and Hurts So Good. Enjoy!

Thanks for posting - that's awesome. Can you please tell me if he talked politics at all during the show? Bringing friends of differing views and want to keep the peace so maybe would head out to the lobby for a drink before that happens if I know its coming! 😉 Thanks again!

Hi Lisa, thanks! He didn't say anything political, though a few of his songs have a political overtone. For example, a new song called "Hey God" has a line about the Second Amendment and mass shootings. "Pink Houses" is about how working class Americans get forgotten. "Rain On The Scarecrow" is about the struggle of small farmers with the rise of big corporations. By the way, Mellencamp has said he doesn't trust Democrats or Republicans, so he's not easy to paint with a political brush. 😊

My band was on stage, starting OUR 2nd set. During the First set. A couple Ladies requested a song. That's fine. I told her that we'd eventually get to her song. We we're going to work it into the 2nd set. She began to shout her request DURING the 2nd set. We finished the song we had started and prepared to play her request. WE play her request and from start to finish! Her and her friend TALKED to each other the entire song!!! Ppl are crazy!!!

This is the biggest complaint I have at shows. Why did they pay to see a show if they were just going to talk through it??? They couldn't possibly be fans. And to those who say that they paid for their ticket, so did I, and I paid to hear the band, not their self absorbed B.S.

I drove about 15 hours to see Peter Gabriel in concert several years ago. It was his New Blood tour. He's one of, if not THE favorite artist of mine, and I was thrilled to finally get to see him. This butthole and two girls sat down in the seats next to us, and you could tell they only came to the show to get drunk and hear Sledgehammer. They started talking loudly through practically every song. He was kind of a big dude, and I am not, so I was hesitant to say anything, because I didn't want to get my ass beat by some drunk moron, but luckily, there was a big Marine looking guy right behind us, who finally had enough. He leaned forward and told him to shut the hell up or move. The guy and the girls got up and left and didn't come back. I made sure to thank the guy behind us.

As a lifelong fan, I was thrilled for this first-time opportunity to see him. I treated my adult children to this concert because we as a family, enjoyed the years of his memorable songs together. We’re Michiganders that live near Toledo and love the smaller venues like Stranahan in Toledo. Let’s begin with the underlying elephant in the room. John Cougar Mellencamp admittedly states “he has a difficult personality”, as seen on an interview, and I feel he was “the” contributing factor in this fiasco. This isn’t one incident, it’s a pattern. From where I was sitting, I barely heard the heckler’s remarks, just a voice yelling his name periodically and shouting out a song request. Regardless, the primary disruption for me was John’s continuous bantering with this buffoon. I’m certainly not condoning the hecklers actions, but why not ignore it, or use two minutes and have security remove the menace, rather than banter, halt the show, and threaten to truncate the set by 10 songs? He literally sucked the air out of the room leaving many of us bewildered. From my point of view, I’m gobsmacked that a seasoned musician/entertainer lacks a protocol or plan “B” for these situations. But, he chose to continuously engage, escalate, then implicate 2,000 other obedient, paying customers . It’s his show, we paid for the goods, and he bears the responsibility to deliver. Instead, we got a pilot that continued to fly in turbulence, reprimanded innocent people, before finally ditching the plane--- over one unruly passenger. As a side note, overly reactive and hypersensitive artists should realize that their songs, lyrics, and stories reflect “their” personal life, not ours---and they've been paid handsomely for it thanks to us. We recreate personal memories using their songs with our own life experiences, time and space…that’s what we pay hundreds of dollars for to hear and feel.

Could've been announced in a smoother style. The best way to announce things to the audience is to keep the rhythm section playing at a soft level while you ask nicely. Carlos Santana and Bruce Springsteen employ this technique. JM's announcement comes across as a blunt "Get Off of My Lawn" approach.

Me too. I am an 80s kid so I heard most of his big hits, and liked them. But after watching this video, my respect for him went up a notch or 2. He said what so many musicians are to afraid to say.

I like this. I had to put up with so much screaming and yelling earlier this month at the Buddy Guy concert that it made it hard to enjoy. A lot of people don’t understand the complaint and think they are supposed to join in singing. To hear this addressed by an artist is great.

Dont care much for john and bruce's concerts cost to much. Its nice that he said this. I know years ago phil collins and billy joel both did similar things, although i think they were a little more heated in the way they said it, and were put down for doing it. Im 57 now and used to play in clubs and i know how folks can get. But with the price of tickets i pay im not the slightest bit interested in how close someone sounds to the performer. I came to watch them not listen to others. But, unfortunately, thats part of the experience.

My wife bought tickets to see John Mayer as a birthday present, first concert I had been to in over 40 years. The SCREAMING coming from over my right shoulder completely ruined the experience. The young women absolutely shrAAAreaked the entire concert as if she expected John Mayer to put down his guitar and come on over and just make her day. I couldn't hear out of that ear for 2 days. We paid quite a bit of money for these seats and it totally sucked. Thanks JCM for bringing this issue to light, but it won't matter.

It’s part of the show., part of his schtick. We just saw him in Vancouver. He said the same thing here. Other YT vids of this tour contain the same clip. I have to agree with others comments that he seems cranky these days but I get it. Lights go down, crowd cheers & a mind-numbing 20 min video intro to his show had his audience pissed off. Nobody cares. Boo birds showed up. Mostly tuned down, slower versions of the hits. Campfire vibes. A long way from the Farm Aid feels. Didn’t play “R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A” & a few others. Brought his grandkids on stage to sing. Cute I guess. Seen John 4X now. Farewell friend & thank you for the songs of my youth.

Good question. I gather from talking to other fans online that this was a preemptive thing. He has been doing this at the very start of his quiet acoustic set (3 songs long), because he hates it when people scream and draw attention to themselves during this mellow part of the show. Things were certainly raucous during the rest of the concert and he didn't seem to mind. 😄

This has been a pet peeve of mine for years and I'm so glad that crotchety old dude said it LOL. I've always thought it was appalling the way some audience members act. The other day I saw a production of To Kill A Mockingbird with Richard Thomas of The Walton's, at a major venue in Fort Lauderdale. The way some of the audience members were acting, and crunching and munching on crinkling bags of potato chips during emotional quieter scenes was so rude and ignorant. Banish them!!

This did really happen to you? Oh, brother. I've never been to one of Paul's shows, simply cannot afford it. Now, it seems everybody wants to be in one of the first three rows because then you get a chance that Paul will invite you up to the stage. Except it seems several people have been invited more than once, and the requests are getting more and more about themselves than about Paul. I think it started with a girl who wanted Paul's signature on her arm so she could have it tattoed in. Then there was more requests like that, and fast forward ten years and people want to get married by Paul.
