Hey you two. This is a great series and we saved them all up to binge watch! One thing we’ve learned is that we LOVE Heathers Choice meals and snacks. No, they are not freeze dried, so they weight slightly more but they are oh so good! I find I digest the meals better and get more energy out of them. Sometime we even make them in the van!
@BoundForNowhere5 жыл бұрын
Hey girl! Glad you enjoyed them! So we've definitely have not heard of those! We will have to give them a try!

When I did the JMT - MTR was a great spot to grab free provisions - we opted to not prepare or pay for any resupply and while the end result was a strange assemblage of bought and hand me down food stuffs - at the end of a long hiking days with two passes a day - turns out it didn’t much matter. I did hear VR was a great time - rumored to feel like isle of lost boys at that point in your back country experience! Thanks for the sweet videos really enjoying the channel!

There was definitely some donation bins but we just didn't want our food to be left to what others had left behind. We actually donated a bunch of food to anEnglish couple that was badly in need of extra calories!

Definitely look at Trader Joe's for other snack options. You mentioned you personally liked the dried fruit in trail mix. TJ's has a variety of dried fruit, fruits disks w. fruit/nut mixed ( fig/walnut, cacao/hazelnut, apricot/coconut), trail mixes, and may varieties of various dried fruits and nuts. Great videos on your JMT and looking forward to watching all your adventures!

We really wished we could have gone to a TJ's or a Sprouts because they have great bulk options. Specifically sprouts has bins and thus would have zero waste, but sadly for the month or so leading up to the trail we never were in a city that had a grocery store with those sorts of things. We just had small mountain towns and had to make due with what we had access to. Live and ya learn

Highly recommend VVR! My friends and I did a chunk of the JMT from Sunrise Lakes to VVR several years ago. VVR has great food and showers and you get a complementary celebratory beer! Heads up that the mileage to get to VVR might be a little higher since the lake is partially dried up (or at least it was 6 years ago) and we had to walk along the lake bed quite a ways to get to the ferry pick-up location. Ferry was definitely worth saving the extra miles though!

Thanks Owen! If you re-package the meals into ziplocs, would you put hot water into the ziploc? Or use a pot?
@stephenpwilks5 жыл бұрын
i am pretty sure it would melt the ziplock
@BoundForNowhere5 жыл бұрын
We know a few people who did this and if you use the freezer bag they do not melt and they did this to all of their meals. Sadly the bags that backpacker meals come in are so stiff that we felt like we were loosing out on a whole days of food worth of space because of how hard they are to pack into a round bear can
@lillypatience5 жыл бұрын
@@BoundForNowhere Good to know that you can still spare dishes with this packing approach.
@melissabarker91355 жыл бұрын
@@BoundForNowhere We also found the backpacker meal bags to be super bulky and a lot of trash to pack out. We ended up preferring ramen and potato pearls and we found this great instant lentil curry soup mix that we also added dried potatoes to. Much less trash and space and still instant.

You guys should do more videos about the truck. You know some 4x4 crawling. Some real overland stuff.

We are not exactly rock crawlers. Overlanding and rock crawling are kinda different things. We will be doing more overlanding videos soon though.
@275Brianrgr5 жыл бұрын
@@BoundForNowhere What I mean is, you guys got a pretty nifty overlanding setup. I'm interested in maybe building something similar and I want to see how it holds up to some serious overlanding which would include doing some serious offroading. Heck you even got a snorkel on that thing. Have you guys done any deep river crossings yet?

It's pretty interesting how different your focus becomes when you are hiking and burning so many more calories then it usually does. It comes down to being able to get as much fuel (calories) as possible while maintaining a weight that is reasonable for your body weight and can physically fit in your pack. We usual do not eat meat, but it was insane how much better having a little bit of meat once a day made us feel. In the end different food works for different people. For us this is what worked and it all comes down to trial and error to figuring out what works for you.
