This almost exactly like getting to my friend's/dealers house after my last day of Highschool in 2003 (I was done after the first semester I just went back to get my diploma and say some "see ya laters" and what not) and my friends were doing the exact same style of teasing me about going to Graduation which was that night knowing full well that I there's zero chance of that happening... I even first responded dead serious that the reason I was there was to invite everyone to my graduation... It was the exact same vibes...

The only difference is that, among stoner friends when I was in college, it was passe to give a s*** about current events. (I understood why though; we grew up with constant headlines about IEDs and body armor shortages and no one had the emotional bandwidth for it.)

The funny thing is that the Temple of Dender actually came here pretty ethically. Egypt offered 4 smaller temples to countries that would help save the Nubian monuments from the rising waters behind the Aswan High Dam in the 60s. The United States put in the most money, and was given the Temple of Dender as thanks. Because of the international campaign to save the Nubian monuments, people today can visit Abu Simbel or Philae or Kalabsha, among others.

My uncle Clement Meighan was involved in the Aswan Dam project, which always struck me as strange because he was a world-renowned archaeologist, but his particular field of expertise was in Mayan, pre-Mayan, and pre-Columbian artifacts and sites. I never did get the whole story of how he ended up involved with the Aswan Dam project, but he was an interesting guy who was always involved in weird stuff. The LSD he took with fellow junior professor Timothy Leary as part of a study (before it was illegal), was what started Dr. Leary on his long, strange trip. And Carlos Castaneda was one of my uncle's star students at UCLA. (Castaneda dedicated his first book to him.) But Clem wasn't a counterculture type. He just went wherever science led him. He talked like an Arizona farmboy and had a mind like a steel trap. There's an irony in all this, though: My uncle ended his career in controversy because he held the adamant view that Ohlone burial sites should be excavated by archaeologists to preserve them for science, ignoring the protests of native American protestors and activists who held the not unreasonable view that the graves of their ancestors shouldn't be exhumed to fulfill the wishes of the scientific community, but left where they are out of respect for their ancestors. Quite a switch from the young man who helped rescue many sites from inundation when the Aswan Dam was built .

Okay but the Temple of Dender really WAS a gift -- it and several other temples were disassembled and transported to museums around the world in advance of the construction of the Aswan Dam and Lake Nassar which flooded a large area and would have submerged the temples. It's totally fair to have issues with museums and collections of artifacts that were appropriated from their native countries, but Dender is a bad example of that.

Obviously. The point being made is that he is bought by the highest bidder, when he's supposed to be serving citizens in one of the most important roles in the country. Your focus on the amount illustrates why this situation exists: America is all about money and personal greed - justice is treated as an inconvenience
