My wife and I stopped watching live tv, listening to the radio or reading any newspaper when the nonsense started three years ago. John Pilger has always been a hero to me. You can just tell when people like him are telling the truth and when the politicians are lying. I've been following John since I was a young lad in late 70s and distinctively remember his reporting from Cambodia and the atrocities committed by Khmer Rouge, then later in my late teans reading his work about the wider dirty war around Cambodia, the unholy alliances between US and China, using Cambodia as a sideshow. Then more recently his amazing doc on future war with China and how that was unlaid by colonial racism towards the Chinese. I recognise when I was young listening to Angela Rippon or Kenneth Kendall that the news was always one-sided but at least they just presented it in a factual way however tunnel focused it was. Now when I watch someone like Tom Bradby on News at Ten, I'm appalled at his constant personal narrative that accompanies the news. If that was a Jerry Springer monologue everyone would be up in arms, this brainwashing and spin on how to think is so disturbing.

Tell the truth?! Are you kidding? The truth doesn't generate ratings which in turn doesn't generate short term capital gains. Americans don't want to hear or care about truth, they only want to hear what they want to hear and nothing else. I'm photo capturing that because I have only heard of Murdoch, Toohey and West. I might disagree with Murdoch's inclusion as I believe his role, along with Charles Bean's was muddling that of journalist and historian with that of propogandist. All these proprietor types like Pulitzer and Hearst had symbiotic relationships with militarist government: the former would provide the case for war, while the latter would provide the war for the former to report on. You can find for example, BBC reports from 2014 about the rise of nazism that totally refute their present positions and bias. In the extreme callowness of my youth I had utter contempt for these naive “anti establishment” journalist types who questioned the formal narrative but now I realise how integral a part of a functional democracy they are whether you agree with their viewpoint or not. Another case of not missing something until it’s gone. We need a new generation of them before it’s too late. Whether it be journalism, audio or video clips, the reporter's job is to tell the reader or viewer an honest story and to include, “Who, What, When, Where and Why”. To omit one or more elements constitutes opinion where the reporter can shape a story to fit a bias. Modern, corporate or government media, leaves the “Who, What, When, Where and Why” to the reader to ask or research for missing elements. This is how a story from the West and the East can be true, but are like night and day...

The problem with Pilger is not that he hasn't produced valuable critiques of Western regimes - because he has. It's that he has never subjected authoritarian regimes to the intense degree of scrutiny that they deserve. This problem began during the Vietnam War. I haven't really the space to write about it here, but it's worth reading what his compatriot Clive James had to say on this. You don't have go down the road of being an apologist for the hideousness of North Vietnam, Putin's Russia or Xi's China, because you dislike so much about the culture from which you yourself have arisen and feel somewhat embattled within. George Orwell, for example, didn't make such a mistake - but the tragedy is, we have no one of his calibre now.

My brother is a very well read person, he has a loathing for the so called 'west', to the extent that he supports Russia, with the hope that all of the Western gov's will come tumbling down over their support for Ukraine. This ingrained western moral superiority complex, which by the way has absolutely no grounding in reality, is the reason why the likes of Pilger, whatever his flaws may be, are an absolute treasure for a bankrupt civilization like the current west. Pilger has always been on the right side of history. Russia has always been on the right side of history also, since 1917...and even prior, on most occasions. I remember Pilger since the 80's studying at university..using him as reference to many arguments I put forward. There is that trust in him, that only honest people achieve deeply in the soul of other honest people. "What goes around comes around." Here we see John once again, honestly giving the facts and proper analysis .. just like he always did. The world would be so much poorer and nastier without people like John Pilger.

True history is based on first hand accounts. Current events reporting should also rely on first hand accounts. But the overwhelming percentage of it is not based on first hand accounts. It is the perspective of those mega rich individuals who want a particular agenda to be stated over and over to be imprinted into peoples' minds, regardless of what is really going on. The Ukraine war is a perfect example of this.

that's just shows where you get the information. I mean Europeans and /or Americans in general. I'm Ukrainian and I will tell from my perspective. The funny thing is we in Ukraine get our news and information what is going on on the front exactly from first-hand accounts. Videos made there by soldiers, volunteers, etc. We're not watching CNN or Fox. I get the conversation people have in the West that your news sell propaganda, no one believes the news anymore and, of course, USA has influence and interests all over the globe, just like every powerful player wants to. I just want to say one thing if you care to listen - when discussing this war, do not take out interests of Ukrainian people out of equation. Even if US or EU benefits from Russian fall, doesn't mean it's all orchestrated by them and Ukrainians are just puppets. We don't care who will benefit in the end, we fight for our freedom and lives. We've been dealing with Russia and Russians the whole time through centuries, we know the threat and we here are not poor people who've been tricked and want to leave in peace with our 'neighbors' but evil Uncle Sam tells us to fight. No, we know that enemy wants to destroy us once and for all this time. That is general feeling here. Please remember that aside from big game of geopolitics there is real struggle and fight of the people

In 2018 a young BBC journalist went more than once to the AZOV front, and brought us live reports with interviews. Those gave us an undisputable background of this war. But meanwhile it got cancelled - doesn`t fit the official US narrative. And that nation profits enorm in many aspects, like it did in other US devastated countries. And still no US president got court marshalled!

I saw this ‘empty chair syndrome’ emerge in the work I was doing as well (weekly tv public affairs programming). It happened because the media became fragmented…and policymakers understood they could get away with not showing up for interviews because the audience was fragmented too.

Last time I saw John Pilger was on his gut wrenching documentary on the Sri Lankan civil war. In direct reporting he exposed the depravity of the Sri Lankan Governments drive to exterminate the Tamil Tigers. It was sickening and enraging.

And I was the first person from outside, into the ex Tiger terrority--and saw full first hand evidence of how the Tigers get their own people down. And I saw zero mass graves on or near that sand spit--where the tigers herded those civilians to hid behind. Where you there or in that country during those endless unnecessary terrorist attacks. Did you pull people out of train cars--all covered in blood--in 1996 at Dehiwala Station--64 dead 400 wounded--Do you think it was a troop train?

I watched as they then dumped the bodies some of the worst scenes I've ever seen from any country

Pilger literally says here that Ukraine is two countries, one being "Russian". That is not objectivity. That's authoritarianism and imperialism. All these regions voted strongly to be independent over 30 years ago. Pilger doesn't seem like he's into democracy.
