I didn’t understand baptism until my wife and I adopted children. We gave those kids membership in our family, made them our heirs. Something that they were powerless to do. They may later reject their inheritance, but they were powerless to bestow it upon themselves in the first place. God, in a 100% graceful action, adopts us and makes us his heirs. We have no power to appropriate this to ourselves. At the same time, we are not unknowing pawns. The infant certainly recognizes his Savior (Luke 1:41-44), and the adult should be coming to baptism under the conviction of the Holy Spirit. Praise God that my salvation doesn’t rest upon my being “fully committed “. I am sometimes faithless. He remains faithful.

I was a baptist for over a decade and honestly, since converting to Lutheranism last year, I feel like the scriptures are clear for the first time. It’s as though I was ever reading and never understanding. I don’t know if that was my fault or the fault of preachers like Piper sowing confusion by stretching and explaining away scripture to uphold their preconceptions. But I am very thankful for the clarity I gained by simply allowing the text to speak for itself.

That has been my experience too. But I am still grateful that I was 8 when I was baptized, because I have a vivid memory of it. But I didn't realize that it meant more than a symbol of Christ dying and raising again. I have learned it clothes me in Christ.

Piper emphasizes faith while de-emphasizing the object of faith by making salvation more difficult to find and more difficult to grab hold of. It is bad enough that faith is turned into a decision/work of man, but it is doubly dangerous when you combine that with the fact that Jesus is so difficult to grab hold of in American Christianity. I am thankful that the Scriptures and the Lutheran Confession so clearly shines a light on the places where Christ can be found with His gifts of forgiveness, life, and salvation. GREAT JOB!

29:33 Amen. This was/is my whole frustration with the Baptist (and others) view of baptism. They have to go through all these hoops and explanations and mental gymnastics to force the text to say something other than what the words are saying. It's like the underlying cognitive dissonance is "the text can't possibly mean what it reads like."

Piper states that the statement "not as the removal of dirt from the body" should be followed with "but as the washing of sin from the soul" if it is to support the idea of baptismal regeneration. Yet, the statement "as an appeal to God for a good conscience" leads me to believe that there must a removal of sin. How else are we to have a good conscience?

"Through Jesus' resurrection" makes FAITH possible and has occasioned the sending of the Holy Spirit to now dwell in believers. Peter is the one who said ," Repent & be baptized for the forgiveness of sins & you will receive the Holy Spirit!" In addition it wasnt merely death that Noah and his family were saved from, but GOD'S WRATH! Baptism corresponds to the saving from God's WRATH.

Piper rightly says that baptism connect us to Christ’s resurrection, but if he is correct about baptism being a work done by the person being baptized, how can this be understood as anything other than a dead man granting himself spiritual resurrection?

Piper actually published an article on the eve of the 500th anniversary of Luther's 95 theses in which he explicitly denies that salvation is by faith alone and asserts that we're saved partly by works ("fruit").

It's funny how no one has a problem with lamb's blood and olive oil sprinkled on & making things "holy" in the OT. Doesn't " holy" mean cleansed & allowed in sacred space? It literally says the priests were consecrated and cleansed with these "earthly" "physical" things. But now in the NT water cant do the same thing? Also, how did Naaman get saved? He was disgusted at the thought of dipping in the Jordan, but did it because he had no way of saving himself. In all these cases, it is because God said it does!

Naaman wanted wanted 2 mule carts full of dirt from the Holy Land so he could worship the one true God and asked Elisha for absolution for having to go in the temple of Rimmon to hold up his master while he worshipped. The fact that he was convicted of worshipping Rimmon and wanted to no more and understood it displeased Yahweh to do so is enough evidence. Jesus also said to the Jews in Luke 4:26 and related passages that Namaan was healed because of faith. He was contrasting the gentiles with faith to those in his hometown who had not faith.

There's so much more to this than the proof texts each side usually brings to the argument. You have to trace this through redemptive history and see how Bible applies baptism in the account of Noah, the Israelites crossing the Red Sea, ceremonial cleansing, Ezekiel 26, sprinkling of clean water etc. Even when Christ forewarned of his death he called it a baptism (Mark 10:38) blood and water flowed out of his body. All of these things tell the story of how Christ unites us to his death burial and resurrection so it does save. Bottom line here’s the UFC chokehold submission Scripture: Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved but whoever does not believe will be condemned (Mark 16:16). Take Jesus at his word or go ahead and tap out.
@grant75868 ай бұрын
Flame, respectfully asking ... So did you get rebaptized with this new view in mind or was your first baptism sufficient as it doesn't matter what you think but tht your baptism was a literal work of God on your behalf.
@tammywilliams-ankcorn9533 Жыл бұрын
Doesn't water baptism include the baptism of the Holy Spirit like we see in Acts 2:37-41? Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and the rest of the apostles, Brethren, what shall we do? And Peter said unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
@andrewl3939 Жыл бұрын
Yes, water baptism and baptism of the Holy Spirit are one in the same (Eph 4:5). The Holy Spirit always works with the Word, and the Word is with the water in baptism. Now, sometimes the Holy Spirit comes apart from baptism (i.e. someone hears the Word of Law and Gospel preached and is converted), but he is also granted in baptism. It's both/and, not either/or.

I appreciate this video and I love that you're clearly trying to uphold what the scripture says as opposed to coming at it with preconceived notions. I hold a Baptist understanding of baptism myself but I really tried to have an open mind and understand how you interpret the text without pushing forward my own preconceptions. However, I still felt that Piper gave a more solid argument for the text here. Peter did contrast that baptism is not a removal of dirt BUT an appeal. He didn't say it was a removal of sin, as Piper rightly pointed out, nor did he say it is effective in and of itself (at least not explicitly). It was Peter (in the text) that put more weight on it being an appeal and I think that's why, understandably, Piper did the same. I think perhaps the argument should be more on what Peter meant by it being an "appeal to God" and why you disagree with Piper's interpretation of that. To me, it's no question that Peter too emphasized on Baptism being an appeal and then connected that to Jesus' resurrection which is also a point of emphasis in the text in relation to how Baptism does in fact "save us".
@ExtraNosAcademy Жыл бұрын
Thx for watching. Respectfully, it appears that you simply agree with your Baptist position. There is no scripture at all, in the whole Bible, that says baptism is an outward sign. Not one. The text is clear, “baptism saves.” God baptizes us. Baptism is God’s work. Not ours. He baptizes us. Though He uses us and our limbs, He gets the credit for baptizing us. Galatians 3:27 “For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” We can NOT put on Christ by our own efforts. Nor can we baptize ourselves into Christ. These things are accomplished by the works of God Himself. We are dead in sin and can NOT bring ourselves back to life. Therefore, God does it. By His word. Delivered in many way. Baptism (Water & His word joined) as one of those means of grace. I’d suggest that you continue to study what the church has always taught about baptismal regeneration since the New Testament forward for 1600 years (and counting). Study all the other text on baptism outside of the baptist echo chamber. God’s peace as you dig further.

@@ExtraNosAcademy As a former baptist, I think we would say baptism saves as an appeal to God for a good conscience which is the being baptized by the Holy Spirit. John baptized with water, but Jesus would baptize with the HOly Spirit. A baptist would not see the water as saving, but the Holy Spirit. The order for a baptist since they don't baptize babies, they receive the Holy Spirit prior to being baptized like Cornelius did.
