Cain, as I see it, sought self-justification. YHWH told him afterward that doing well meant acceptance, and if not, sin waited at the door, whom he was to overcome. In other words, Cain received good counsel, yet decided to ignore it. He was as an animal. Truth resides outside of us, and that is what we must understand. If we have truth within us, it isn't of our own making, but that of Messiah.

I got it. Cain was the first school shooter meme. Woman "have gotten a man with the help of the Lord." And tilling the Earth is less sexy that meat and sacrifice, so beta males and women teamed up to speak for God against Cain. Overcoming sin is NOT killing Tw@t$ and C!_!nt$. But cursing them verbally for the nature of the sin that produced them is my task.

I think you are spot on and it even goes much deeper than this as you dig into it. Cain and Abel is a key foundational lesson in scripture upon which themes so much of the good book reinforces.

It seems to me also that under the Old covenant Abel actually made a true sacrifice of the best he has (it was even a blood sacrifice for sin). Meanwhile Cain just basically gave some vegetables as a sacrifice. I often wonder if Cain actually even understood what he did and wasn't getting right in his offerings. God even asked point blank "What have you done?" - and Cain wouldn't even engage in the conversation. Essentially as this speaker says less directly - Cain had no real desire to learn and grow in holiness. Under the old covenant (no Jesus) that also meant giving up the best you could muster in atonement for you sin. Praise Jesus we no longer live under that system! It is truly wonderful what he did for us on the cross. I pray all of us will be blessed with the truth of the gospel.

4:07 What is the point of mentioning Bethlehem?

John Piper is addressing his congregation at that point, which is Bethlehem Baptist Church. He’s not mentioning the place where Jesus was born.
