John Prine was an artist’s artist with a list of admirers and collaborators that cut across musical genres and generations - names like Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Brandi Carlile, George Strait, Kurt Vile, Miranda Lambert, The Everly Brothers, Emmylou Harris, among others.
Though he was born in Maywood, Illinois, in 1946, John declared himself “pure Kentuckian” throughout his life. His parents, Willian and Verna, were natives of Paradise, Kentucky. The family would spend summers there in Muhlenberg County, where John listened to bluegrass music and studied the guitar styles of country music heroes Doc Watson and Merle Travis with his older brother, Dave.
In Maywood, he worked as a postman before being drafted into the army in 1966. It was as a postman that John began to write the songs that would connect with so many. He sang at Chicago folk clubs, where he was introduced to singer-songwriter Kris Kristopherson, who invited John to open for him in New York. It was there that Jerry Wexler, president of Atlantic Records, first heard Prine and offered him a recording contract. His self-titled debut album was released in 1971 and featured a list of songs now regarded as classics, including “Paradise,” “Angel From Montgomery,” “Illegal Smile,” Hello in There,” and “Sam Stone.” Prine received the first of his 13 Grammy nominations in 1972 for Best New Artist. He would record three more albums for Atlantic and another three with Asylum.
His profound impact on American music was amplified in 1981 when John co-founded Oh Boy Records, and independent label where he released most of his subsequent work and which gave voice and respect to so many fellow singers and songwriters.
In his distinguished career, John won four Grammys and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2020). He was a three-time recipient of the Artist of the Year Award at the Americana Music Honors & Awards, which also honored him with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. He won the Pen/New England Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence Award (2016) and was enshrined in the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2019). In addition, John was named Honorary Poet Laureate of Illinois (2020).
John Prine passed away on April 7, 2020 due to complications from Covid-19. The outpouring of grief and love from his fan community was staggering. Over 500,000 viewers participated in an online memorial and tribute that raised more than half a million dollars for Covid-related community causes. In 2021, the Prine family created the Hello In There Foundation to honor John’s spirit of generosity towards those in need. Fiona Prine and her sons continue to operate and expand the reach of John’s independent record label, Oh Boy Records.

yeah, same here, all the way back to 1971 or 72 whenever it was.I used to think he had been sneaking and reading my mail, getting info from people who knew me intimately, listening to me carry on through the thin walls of my old Baltimore apartment. Nobody told our stories the way he did....nobody made a beautiful futile sense of it all the way he did. John passed on just two weeks after I buried my mom, who at the age of 95 realized it was time to get out of here. Just in time for this goddam virus. I am blessed to have loved both of them.

Twenty two years ago I took my oldest daughter to her first John Prine concert. I had sung her to sleep over the years with "Blue Umbrella" and she brought a blue umbrella to the show. We sat near the front and early in the show John saw her and nodded. Late in the show he sang "Blue Umbrella" to her. "Many years later," I took my youngest daughter to her first John Prine concert. She had been sung to sleep with "One Red Rose," and she took a red rose to the concert. Once again we sat toward the front, and John noticed her and nodded. Late in the concert he sang "One Red Rose." So this man that I already loved so much performed this enormous act of kindness towards my two daughters. I miss him so much, it is hard getting used to living in a world without John Prine in it.

At my first Vietnam Vet rap group we all had to introduce ourselves.First names only. I decided to use a first and last name,when it was my turn. It's a beautiful morning in Maine and I'm crying my eyes out listening to this song. I'm here because my sister in law is slowly but surely losing her battle with cancer. I wasn't aware of Mr. Prine very early in my life but my brother knew who he was. He shared his love of John Prine and I immediately became a lifelong fan. Sadly my brother passed away three weeks ago. We never had the opportunity to talk about this particular song but it made me think of my brother when it first came out. I considered my brother to be sort of the memory of our family. If there ever was a dispute between any of my siblings about long-ago memories we would turn to him to settle the conflict. It's so sad that he was taken by a horrible disease that robbed him and us of his memories(glioblastoma). That's why this song now carries enormous emotional baggage. As much as I will never forget John Prine I will not ever forget my brother, Mathew/

I've listened to John since the 80s..today was a very incredible day. The love of my life died in '21..I thought I had cried every tear. Then this song opens in my algorithm on the very day I had to get all my paperwork together to apply for my survivor benefits. My John Prine story: In the summer of 2013 I was a Bus Operator driving a regular daily bus route from El Paso, Texas to Las Cruces, New Mexico called the Texas/New Mexico Park & Ride. Most of the commuters were students from El Paso going to NMSU, or El Paso residents working in Las Cruces or White Sands Missle Range and vice versa. Las Cruces residents going to school at UTEP or working in El Paso. One morning I'm boarding passengers in downtown El Paso and this one fellow catches my eye. There are homeless shelters near both the downtown El Paso bus stop and the downtown Las Cruces stop, so alot of these characters hopped between shelters on a regular basis. So I eyed him over making sure he was clean and not sneaking in some alcohol as some tended to do. He looked alright and he took a seat a couple of rows behind me. As I got on I-10 he started singing, not too loud, but singing to himself and chuckling at himself and the lyrics he was singing. It took me awhile but I finally realized he was singing John Prine songs. Souvenirs, Dear Abbey, Hello in There and on and on. With 3 stops between El Paso and Las Cruces the drive takes about an hour and fifteen. The whole way he sort of softly sang one song after another. I knew it was kind of annoying some of the passengers seated near him, but no one audibly complained. And even if they did, I wasn't about to ask him to stop. This was a John Prine sort of person. When we reached Las Cruces and as he walked down the steps of the bus I called out to him. A little startled, he turned around and I told him, "thanks for the John Prine concert!" I think I made his day...and John Prine made ours.

My JP story. In 1975 my wife and I decided to give Australia a second chance so we flew to Singapore and then boarded a boat for Perth. While boarding we met this young Aussie guy with a nice guitar and I asked him what type of music he liked. He said we would not have heard of him but it was a guy named John Prine. I then showed him what I had in my rucksack.All JPs LPs at the time. He was gobsmacked and asked me to help him with the words of Paradise. I did my best. The night before we docked at Perth we had a concert and he sang Paradise beatifully for me and Janet. I may have shed a tear.

I was the one who turned my Mom onto John Prine, in a way. I was 30 when I moved back in with my parents for @ 6 months during my horrible divorce. Mom heard me playing John's music on my stereo, and the song "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness" just blew her away. She came in the room with tears in her eyes, asked me to play it again, then we both hugged and cried as we listened to the lyrics. She loved music, and had excellent taste. I never knew who John Prine was until I heard of his passing. I consider myself very knowledgeable when it comes to music. I have been exploring John's music for the last 5 weeks and I can say that he, without a doubt, has become my most favorite song writer of all time. Such simple song structure with such a powerful message. I'm sad I never got to see you perform John. I hope you are having your vodka and ginger ale next to peaceful waters.

Yes, you arrived late to the party. John doesn't mind though. He wrote many many songs. My guess is, around 300? Every one, a treasure. I first heard about John in the mid 80's. I bought his albums, got to see him perform once in '94. His music has a life sustaining quality. Peace, love and Prine.

His voice became so powerful as he aged. I remember in an interview with Terry Gross, he discussed talking with his doctor about an upcoming surgery and the doctor had concerns about how his voice would sound afterwards and John replied, "Have you ever heard me sing?"

As a kid I grew up in Tennessee, going to the smokies to camp with my string picking family and such. John Prine was the one thing that brought us all together at these events, my Pa would pick and sing his songs all night and we'd sit by the fire and listen. I see my grandfather in this man, and unfortunately he passed in 2011, so I have always looked up to Prine in many ways. The feeling I got that morning he passed was the same feeling I had back in 2011. Love and miss you John Prine, I know what I'll do when I get to heaven

I came here as I’m reading ‘Every Deep Breath Drawn’ by Wes Ely, an intensive care consultant who has worked to humanise critical care (I also work on critical care in England). Dr Ely treated John Prine, who unfortunately died of Covid 19. He sings his praises, as a person and an artist, and refers to this song. I’ve never heard of John Prine but this song is so beautiful. I’m looking forward to discovering more.

My husband introduced me to John Prine. I had heard some of the songs but never knew who was singing them let alone who wrote them. Like you I immediately listened to all I could get my hands on & now have many many favourites. My husband & I listened to his music every week. We had (I still do) a stereo in our kitchen as well as in our basement family room. We cooked together and entertained frequently always with music playing. We introduced John’s music to friends who like me knew a couple of songs. My husband died in 2013 and though I keep listening I miss him mostly when I play John Prine. This song makes me think immediately of my husband and I probably cried the first time I heard it. Now I smile as the wonderful years of memories flood me. Thank you John, forever.

John, you're missed! My poet laureate, America's soul. I had the privilege of taking my new bride to John's concert at Center Stage in midtown Atlanta in the mid-80's. I was surprised but thrilled that John walked on stage alone, no backup musicians. The audience was silent, captivated by the Master. John played solo for 90-minutes, took one very short break. The lyrics and music were perfection. It's been several years since John passed but he is not forgotten. John, I wish you peace. I hope Steve and you are reunited. The music is alive.

My parents discovered John Prine early in his career when he would sing at the Earl of Oldtown in Chicago. My brothers and sisters and I grew up with his music and those incredible lyrics as the backdrop of our childhood. There was the added connection that our family had its roots in Kentucky, as did John's. All these years later, listening to the songs that I could sing by heart at the age of ten, it is clear to me why. There is nothing banal about his music. It's just full of truth, like he wrote the songs really for himself. Thank goodness he was generous enough to share them with the rest of us.

John and his pal Steve Goodman were two of the greatest songwriters ever. I spent my late 20's and early 30's frequenting the Earl, the Quiet Knight and Somebody Else's Troubles before moving to Denver and never enjoyed any live music more than by these two and Claudia Schmidt and Fred Holstein.
