Lyrics:
You and me
Sittin' in the back my memory
Like a honey bee
Buzzin' 'round a glass of sweet Chablis
Radio's on
Windows rolled up
And my mind's rolled down
Headlights shining
Like silver moons
Rollin' on the ground
We made love
In everyway love can be made
And we made time
Look like time
Could never fade
Friday Night
We both made the guitar hum
Saturday made Sunday feel
Like it would never come
Gonna be a long Monday
Sittin' all alone on a mountain
By a river that has no end
Gonna be a long Monday
Stuck like the tick of a clock
That's come unwound - again
Soul to soul
Heart to heart
And cheek to cheek
Come on baby
Give me a kiss
That'll last all week
The thought of you leavin' again
Brings me down
The promise of
Your sweet love
Brings me around

Singer. Songwriter. Poet. Icon.
John Prine was an artist’s artist with a list of admirers and collaborators that cut across musical genres and generations - names like Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Brandi Carlile, George Strait, Kurt Vile, Miranda Lambert, The Everly Brothers, Emmylou Harris, among others.
Though he was born in Maywood, Illinois, in 1946, John declared himself “pure Kentuckian” throughout his life. His parents, Willian and Verna, were natives of Paradise, Kentucky. The family would spend summers there in Muhlenberg County, where John listened to bluegrass music and studied the guitar styles of country music heroes Doc Watson and Merle Travis with his older brother, Dave.
In Maywood, he worked as a postman before being drafted into the army in 1966. It was as a postman that John began to write the songs that would connect with so many. He sang at Chicago folk clubs, where he was introduced to singer-songwriter Kris Kristopherson, who invited John to open for him in New York. It was there that Jerry Wexler, president of Atlantic Records, first heard Prine and offered him a recording contract. His self-titled debut album was released in 1971 and featured a list of songs now regarded as classics, including “Paradise,” “Angel From Montgomery,” “Illegal Smile,” Hello in There,” and “Sam Stone.” Prine received the first of his 13 Grammy nominations in 1972 for Best New Artist. He would record three more albums for Atlantic and another three with Asylum.
His profound impact on American music was amplified in 1981 when John co-founded Oh Boy Records, and independent label where he released most of his subsequent work and which gave voice and respect to so many fellow singers and songwriters.
In his distinguished career, John won four Grammys and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2020). He was a three-time recipient of the Artist of the Year Award at the Americana Music Honors & Awards, which also honored him with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. He won the Pen/New England Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence Award (2016) and was enshrined in the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2019). In addition, John was named Honorary Poet Laureate of Illinois (2020).
John Prine passed away on April 7, 2020 due to complications from Covid-19. The outpouring of grief and love from his fan community was staggering. Over 500,000 viewers participated in an online memorial and tribute that raised more than half a million dollars for Covid-related community causes. In 2021, the Prine family created the Hello In There Foundation to honor John’s spirit of generosity towards those in need. Fiona Prine and her sons continue to operate and expand the reach of John’s independent record label, Oh Boy Records.

They once called him the "new Dylan" but not really true. Dylan certainly was one of his heroes, but he shared none of Dylan's cynicism. Empathy and a gentle sense of humour were at the heart of his genius.

Could listen this all damn day. John Prine was a true gift to humanity. My mother suffered from Dementia, lost the ability to do everything she loved except one thing- listen to music. John was her favorite. Throw on an album and she'd sit and listen for hours. Slapping her own knee so hard i thought it would leave bruises on her withering body, but it was all she had left.

I live in Nashville, TN. I met John once in a Kroger (grocery store). He was shopping and I didn’t want to bother him. I just shook his hand and said thank you for the music. My favorite of his songs is Angels from Montgomery. He has a way of painting a picture of real life and then noticing the soul that exists underneath it. I used to go to this little hotdog shop called Hot Diggity Dogs just south of Broadway in Nashville. It was the home of Nashville’s Chicago Dog. It closed in 2019. The owner said that John used to come in periodically and get a dog and sit outside and eat it. I hoped I’d run into him one day. Instead, our paths crossed at Kroger. Thanks again John.

This song is so spot on looking back. Looking back as the boy who was tossed for being “just a boy that wont go any where” i am grateful they showed their hand early while they broke my heart. Now as a man i have a good woman and a bank account with two commas in its balance. I am a man still with a heart of gold and still enjoying life like a boy.

I have been listening to John Prine for over fifty years and every time I think that I have heard all the best John Prine songs I find another one. I hesitate to use the word genius but I don't know what other word to use. So, maybe, a down-to-earth American genius. For those who are just starting to listen to him, start with Hello In There. It is still the song whenever I think about him.

You listened to him for over 50 years....me, I discovered his music only after he passed away ( through KZbin friends)...so, only 3 years. He was not so very well known in France, but oh am I glad to know him now ( sorry for my poor english). I think I will try to play some of his beautiful songs. I'm so sorry for the loss of your beloved husband. I'm glad you have those wonderful memories. I know what you mean, many Prine songs remind me of my fiance I met in 1980, the only man I truly loved. He was unlike anyone I've ever known, when I first saw him I felt like I'd always known him and we were just picking up where we left off. It was so easy to be with him, and he made every ordinary experience special somehow. We both loved John Prine and Harry Nilsson, when I listen to their songs it brings back sweet memories. Bert died in 1989, I'm never going to be "over it", but I'm grateful that: "...Well, I once knew love - I knew how love felt Yeah I knew love - love knew me And when I walked - love walked with me And I got no hate - and I got no pride Well, I got so much love that I cannot hide..."

I first heard this song during a time of my life when a relationship with a love ended. It was a painful time but I would listen to this and his voice would soothe the hurt I felt. I listened to the album ‘Fair and square’ regularly and became obsessed. I’d stay up late and scout KZbin and grooveshark in a bid to discover more of his music. Looking back, I think it’s John Prine combined with Nancy Griffith who got this English 25 year old into country music. I decided to listen again after hearing the news of John fighting this terrible virus and it reminds me of how much of an impression he’s had on my musical journey. Stay strong and fight this! x

I have always loved John's music, and this tune is among my favourites. I particularly like that the video was filmed on the roads in and about Paradise, or at least where it used to be until Peabody hauled it away and put a the power plant there (the one right near the end of the video). I rode up there once until the armed security guards chased me away.

Guess boomers are good for something after all. Check out some of his early stuff, 60s & 70s. Cynical yet funny. Help many of us get through a difficult turbulent time. Randy Newman was like the establishment John Prine .

...you know - i listen to John, and I without thinking about it somewhere the back of my soul is speaking to me, saying, "this song has always been"...and I nod agreeably...but that's not true at all...John Prine gave us these gifts, these moments, and our lives are forever touched by his magic...

Every day I am driving to work, I invariably see “Objects in the mirror”, and I think of this song, and I think of my wife at home. Like a ritual, this song keeps me grounded every morning, reminds me what I work for, and why I push myself to work hard. Thanks for getting me motivated every day John.
