John Prine was an artist’s artist with a list of admirers and collaborators that cut across musical genres and generations - names like Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Brandi Carlile, George Strait, Kurt Vile, Miranda Lambert, The Everly Brothers, Emmylou Harris, among others.
He worked as a postman before being drafted into the army in 1966. It was as a postman that John began to write the songs that would connect with so many. He sang at Chicago folk clubs, where he was introduced to singer-songwriter Kris Kristopherson, who invited John to open for him in New York. It was there that Jerry Wexler, president of Atlantic Records, first heard Prine and offered him a recording contract. His self-titled debut album was released in 1971 and featured a list of songs now regarded as classics, including “Paradise,” “Angel From Montgomery,” “Illegal Smile,” Hello in There,” and “Sam Stone.” Prine received the first of his 13 Grammy nominations in 1972 for Best New Artist. He would record three more albums for Atlantic and another three with Asylum.
His profound impact on American music was amplified in 1981 when John co-founded Oh Boy Records, and independent label where he released most of his subsequent work and which gave voice and respect to so many fellow singers and songwriters.
In his distinguished career, John won four Grammys and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2020). He was a three-time recipient of the Artist of the Year Award at the Americana Music Honors & Awards, which also honored him with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. He won the Pen/New England Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence Award (2016) and was enshrined in the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2019). In addition, John was named Honorary Poet Laureate of Illinois (2020).
John Prine passed away on April 7, 2020 due to complications from Covid-19. The outpouring of grief and love from his fan community was staggering. Over 500,000 viewers participated in an online memorial and tribute that raised more than half a million dollars for Covid-related community causes. In 2021, the Prine family created the Hello In There Foundation to honor John’s spirit of generosity towards those in need. Fiona Prine and her sons continue to operate and expand the reach of John’s independent record label, Oh Boy Records.

Sad day today. I first heard your music in 1975 and it has stuck with me ever since. I was 23 then and when I heard Hello in There, I felt sorry for those old folks, I guess that was partly the point. The other to have some empathy.... Now I am "those old folks" and for me, it gives the song a whole new meaning. How could you have been that insightful in your 20's.....guess that was your genius. The first time I saw John play live was in 1984. It was him and Steve Goodman. They played at the University of Arizona in Tucson. When I heard they were coming, I literally ran to the box office and got 4 tickets. Second row, center. I had been listening to him for almost 10 years by then, mostly while stationed in Germany in the army. To see him and Steve in person was the culmination of my music listening journey. I still have the ticket stub and have since scanned it to help preserve the memory. Thanks, John, for bringing us to this moment.

It was Sandpoint Idaho where we met for the first time... Just previous to that, The Panida Theater invited us to list on a 3 × 5 card, our requests for future artists we desired to perform at that venue... I believe we were asked to put 3 names on the card. I got Blessed that night John... They brought You and the others too...I'm still in Idaho, homebound on Hoodoo Mountain and the poster from that event hangs still (wait ... I think it just moved, as if God blew a gentle breath with memories attendant)... No, I was wrong... It was only that mouse (from Mars, now his name) sneakin' in thru a hole-in-the-wall behind it)...Lol... 20 years ago I moved from NY to Tampa and auditioned for a band shortly afterward. Having never played the particular genre of music this band did, they gave me a tape of songs to learn. It was then that I heard John Prine for the first time with tunes like Paradise and Far from me. At the audition I mentioned how great those songs were and asked who it was? They laughed at me and said are you kidding me? That's John Prine. You don't know John Prine? I didn't up until that point, but I started listening to a lot of his work, and he soon became one of my favorite songwriters of all time. Damn will he be missed? Even more so in the future then now, because his vintage only improves with time. As writers of his ilk become fewer and fewer, we'll miss him more and more.

@@TampaDave I'm still around. I used to get homesick now and again. But with each visit back to NY, it gradually diminished until I eventually did a complete 360°. Now when I visit NY, I miss Florida. I was totally surprised when I first moved here to discover all the excellent musicians and great music scene in this area at the time. Now that I'm retired I'm looking to get back into playing more regularly. The problem I've had is finding musicians around my age. I have no problem playing with the younger guys, it's the younger guys that don't understand that I'm not old, I'm Vintage. There's a difference.

I‘ve heard his song ‚Day is done‘ on a TV series called ‚My name is Earl‘ when I was 15 I guess. I searched who wrote that song. Such a simple sounding thing taking you away to a different universe of thoughts. Then I found out it was John Prine. I listened to a lot of his songs while growin‘ up. Sam Stone, Lake Marie, Souvenirs. No words needed to what guys like him could do with such simple things. He said more in two words than other people say in a lifetime. Now he‘s gone. And I‘m sad as I feel like someone died I knew well. May you be in good company John where ever you might be. ❤️

I also live deep in my head , My wife of thirty eight years, Now she's layin Dead, Wanted cremation cause of hating the cold, Now she's gone and I just feel really old. She was seven years older than me, didn't want me to die first, leave her lonely way inside of her head. So I live here inside of my head, and she lives with me even though she's called dead, We're gonna be living here as long as I can sing this song.
