My dad died in February. When planning his memorial service, I went through his playlists to start making a playlist for the memorial. When I opened up the app, this was the last song he had listened to. It took me three months to work up the courage to listen to it. I was expecting it to be a sad song, and instead was greeted with a joyful song about enjoying things and forgiving people. Which is exactly the kind of thing Dad would have wanted for us. I'm so glad this was the last song he chose to listen to. It feels like it was his way of saying he'll be okay. I miss him so much. Tonight, I'm having a cocktail of vodka and ginger ale. Here's to you pops.

I wish I could heart your comment. My dad was born February 29th and he died January the month before he turned 40. He was a leap year baby so that year was going to be extra special we thought. His attitude was at least as happy as this song was. He had a terminal illness but never once did he make it a part of our lives. Our Dad was our dad and we knew he had a ticking time bomb but we didn't know when and he treated it as if he would always be there but gave us so much in the time he had.. He was a huge music person and music even made it to his headstone. He died in 1988. During his funeral I had to leave because I HAD to be anywhere but there. My aunt walked with me in my yard while playing Pink Floyd. I had also lost a sister . She was 15 and had gotten meningitis. All of a sudden. She felt ill and within the weekend she died. When she died my father could not go to her funeral. It was too much and he also walked the yard we lived during her funeral.

Mom Transcended Dec 23, 2018. This song found me a few days after her service for the first time. John was our guy. Anytime we rode together..She would have the CD Ready to go. And we would sing. Just like when I was a kid. This one helped me so damn much. I laughed till I cried. She had metastatic Lung cancer and quit smoking. So She Definitely Smoke a Cigarette 9 miles long.. probably 2😂. She sent me a message this morning..and this song popped right back in my head. It's fitting that He moved on shortly after. She still sings with me. Damn I miss our laughing till we need inhailers.. We talked every single day for hours about the dumbest shit..Love &Hugs to all of you who know. And to all of you who dont. Treasure Every Single Second Like we did. ❤

My dad just passed on August 10th. He had blood cancer. Had a bone marrow transplant in May that failed. Every complication he could have gotten, he did. From the chemo, from the transplant, from the lack of immune system. He got a booster transplant in June and that also failed. He was living through hell. He had one last chance of trying a third transplant of cord blood, but his liver started failing and the doctor had to take that option off the table. They loaded him up with an extra unit of blood and gave him a life expectancy of 4-5 days. Oddly enough, he seemed happier after hearing that. Knowing that his suffering would soon be over. He was a prine fan for as long as I can remember. We listened to this song several times in those last 4-5 days, along with so many other great Prine songs. He made it to day 6... my dad never was one to follow rules. I have a little peace knowing he is up there helping John with that 9 mile long cigarette... exchanging stories and having a hell of a party. Rest in peace Dad. "If you aren't livin on the edge, you're taking up space" 💗

Some good comments here, i believe John Prine wrote this song because it's how he felt and what he believed, and if anyone felt the same and it made them happy, he was happy and if you listened and didn't like it l, i doubt he could care less. RIP. Mr Prine.

My dad would always play Prine when we were little, usually on our way to our camping trips. I couldn’t stand the sound. He was just some old geezer that my dad listened to. But I some point when I grew into my teenage years. Maybe because I started listening to the words instead of tuning out. Then out of nowhere I was convinced John was my favorite artist. I am 21 now and my sweet girlfriend got me tickets to my first concert on may 23rd for his Louisville concert. I am heartbroken I couldn’t see him before he passed. But i am blessed to know a wonderful artist. I hope his family are okay, just one request for them, please don’t bury him down in the cold cold ground!

This is for all of those grieving in the comment section: no one ever truly dies. Your loved one is present, talk to them, they will talk back within their own capacity. That may be though the remembrance of a song, the appearance of a butterfly, or even finding a penny with their birth year or something along those lines. They are here helping you move mountains. Jon - to give credit where credit's due, Kris Kristofferson was the first one to say that about JP. Cash may have repeated it (and it's certainly worth repeating many times), but Kristofferson said it first.

We have lost John, but his spirit, his poetry, and sense of humor will be with us as long as we have these electrical devices. We however will not have any more creations by John. My prayers are with you Fiona and family. I think you lost a wonderful man. Did he get that cigarette that’s nine miles long? We will never know.

John's idea of heaven was just doing what he enjoyed on earth. Where all sins have been forgiven and there's no harm anymore in having a good time. Who's going to say he's wrong? Miss you John, you always made me smile.

John Prine, one of the most underrated musicians who kept our neighbors up while we kept partying away! Grandpa was a carpenter ( mine was), Please don't bury me, Sam Stone, Illegal Smile, anything off the Sweet Revenge album, the list goes on....Hang in there John, you haven't written one about how much Disco sucked yet! Looking at my torn and tattered Sweet Revenge album how I wish I had a turn table, the scratches in it reminds me of a better time. Thank you John and please get well

I know John is thoroughly enjoying all the love from his mamas sisters - just sitting together. John, with mom and dad, all laughing together as they watch brother Doug and cousin Jackie, still cutting up a rug. ❤ The man could take the simplest of words and phrases, mix them with a rhythm and create masterpieces

Sadly, John left us today after contracting the CoronaVirus-19 and spending 12 days on a ventilator! Fortunately, we've seen him performing several times in the past, including during this past November 2019 at his inaugural All the Best Fest in the Dominican Republic. We will miss him greatly and are deeply saddened by today's news!

I can't remember the last time tears made it all the way to my chin. Never has there been a man that could write from the heart of another. Could you imagine writing, "Hello in There" at 24? RIP John. I hope you are Whistlin' and Fishin' in heaven. I'm losing my hearing so I put in a request for both of your ears... cuz "I don't mind the size". Thank you for getting me through tough times by helping me see others. I'll miss you.

Since then I scoured KZbin of all the videos I could find of him. Mr.John just passed on yesterday so his soul will still be around for a couple more weeks b4 his soul goes on up .I know these things for a fact cause I've dealt with them for years & so if his family & friends all his loved 1's will pay close attention they will see sirns & some bout even be lucky enough to see him again b4 he leaves for good in his earth body .They will feel is touch & smell his smell & sometimes even hear his voice .I know he will go to Heaven I'm sure of that but I'm just saying he is not there yet not until after his burial but now he mite go a lil sooner cause nobody can have funeral services rite now & I so hate that about this horrible virus .If I had 1 wish it would be to have a cure for this for every human & animal still alive today .God Bless all .
