@@scottclay4444 "Prine's stuff is pure Proustian existentialism. Midwestern mindtrips to the nth degree. And he writes beautiful songs. I remember when Kris Kristofferson first brought him on the scene. All that stuff about Sam Stone the soldier junky daddy and Donald and Lydia, where people make love from ten miles away. Nobody but Prine could write like that. If I had to pick one song of his, it might be Lake Marie. I don't remember what album that's on," Dylan told MTV producer Bill Flanagan.

Going through a rough patch but at the same time a change of heart. I was online searching for memes under "when you are bitter & mad watch your words" and the title & lyrics of this song came up. I had never heard of John Prine but glad I have now. "...... But it don't do no good to get angry so help me I know. For a heart stained in anger grows weak, it grows bitter, You'll become your own prisoner as you watch yourself sit there wrapped up in a trap of your very own chain of sorrow....."

Makes me cry every time thinking of a similar story, a student at the University of Wisconsin in Madison in the 60's on his way to class who was run over by a freight car that rolled over him as he tried to go under the linkage between cars of the train that was blocking the street to the campus. Everyone was waiting for it to pass but he got impatient and tried to go under it. Just them the cars bumped each other from some backing manuevere of the engine and the wheel rolled over his torso trapping him. He was there alive for hours while they tried to save him but it was hopeless. I came along during that time when they still hadn't been able to move the train. It was awful and I still remember it to this day.

This song is about me but john doesnt know that. The alter boy on the tracks touches some viet nam experiences. The girl on the park bench, could be my dark haired first girlfriend who played me without mercy just because she could. Nothing I could do would erase the anger. Until facebook, realizing her inside ugly finally overtook her outside, and she is a desperately bleach-blond , sun dried hag.Not sure that's a real victory but l will take it It's hard to let go of hurts, big and small.I guess that means it builds character.
