Ratzenberger actually reprised his role as Major Derlin's voice back in 2017. It was in the animated Lego Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures. He uses the voice he is much more known for today.

I only learned about John Ratzenberger being in Star Wars last night, and now that I know I'm trying to listen to his voice. If you didn't know it was him then you would be like, and you learned about it you might be like "That doesn't sound anything like Hamm."
@TwiigssGames6 жыл бұрын
Wow, that's crazy. I never knew he was in Empire Strikes Back. Sounds nothing like him, so the character he did for Cheers, he might have changed his voice for the show. Rene Auberjonois did this with DS9. Watch Rene in Benson, and then watch DS9, you'll see how he makes his voice kind of raspy like. And I believe he was in productions after DS9, and he doesn't have the raspy voice anymore.
@zingzangspillip13 жыл бұрын
@@TwiigssGames It doesn't sound like him at all, so maybe he was dubbed?

@@zingzangspillip1 I'm thinking he probably changed his voice up for Star Wars. He is a judge on an episode of Hell's Kitchen and you can hear the Cliff Clavin in his voice a little bit.

Over-dubbing was pretty common in older movies. Often there were problems with audio and the original actor was not around to fix it. You see a ton of this in old movies and even some T.V. shows. Someone else was totally speaking for him in those other scenes.

@AvengerII6 жыл бұрын
He was overdubbed... That sounds NOTHING like him. Sorry, even with an accent you'd be able to tell it was him. This was definitely another actor overdubbing him. A lot of actors were overdubbed in Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back. There was actor (now deceased) who played Rogue Two in TESB who was also overdubbed. He played the gay father in Absolutely Fabulous. He was surprised by the dubbing because he said, "That how I would have sounded if they asked me back into an ADR studio re-record the dialogue!" The reason why they did overdubs was because A) some voices didn't SOUND right for Star Wars (hence why James Earl Jones was hired specifically to do Darth Vader's voice) and B) studios can be noisy or the onset mikes can pick up noises they DON'T want to be pick up. Believe it or not, they have to do ADR for a lot of movies. A lot of times, they simply don't record voices well on the days they shoot these films for one reason or another. They had to re-record at least 80% of the dialogue for Star Trek: The Motion because the set for the Enterprise was noisy with all the electronics built into the set's consoles.

I'm pretty sure he was overdubbed. His voice for his role as an American Lieutenant in Gandhi was overdubbed by Martin Sheen according to IMDB. Even though it's not mentioned a IMDB regarding Empire Strike Back, I would say he was overdubbed in the film too. It doesn't even sound remotely like John Ratzenberger. His voice is very distinctive and I don't think he could disguise it that well.

@hulkmeister23 To be honest I have no idea. I found it really hard to find information about this but if you find out tell me. Also, according to Wikipedia due to his tiny roles in The Empire Strikes Back and Superman and his roles in the Pixar films he's the 4th most successful actor of all time at the box office. I found this pretty hard to believe and I tried to research it but it's strangely very difficult.

It surprises me that John Ratzenberger is a Conservative who Supports/Supported Donald Trump depending on if his views changed or not since then. Mad Respect to actors like John Ratzenberger, Tim Allen, Dean Cain, Lou Ferrigno, James Woods, Gina Carano, etc for being openly Conservative, especially in Modern Hollywood where even thinking about Conservatives could get you cancelled. Heck, Toy Story has both Tim Allen & John Ratzenberger in the films. 2 Conservatives in 4 Disney films. In 2022, that's unheard of.
