I bought one of John's whistles well over twenty years ago (for about $75.00 USD) while attending The Catskills Irish Music Festival. John was selling them at the festival. I am only discovering tonight ( November 2020) ....what the... JS ... initials stand for carved at the back of the whistle!!!! I had NO idea back then who John was... but I do today!! The whistle remains my favourite to this day!!! Go figure...What I learn on KZbin!! Thanks John for a fantastic whistle!!!!

@@NamaskarShanti Oh yes, definitely! Interestingly, at $60, it's still my most expensive tinwhistle/pennywhistle. I've some Dixons, Clarkes (Classic, Sweetone, MEG), Feadogs, Walton and others, but the Sindt outperforms them all.
@NamaskarShanti4 жыл бұрын
usernamemykel ....you have a wide collection of whistles in that shoebox :) Back when I bought the Sindth...I bought a whistle made in nickel by another maker ( Coleman). I had no idea who he was either :) Turns out his whistles were THE ones to buy too... little did I know! They are very pricy today too to buy...even a used one. I prefer the softer... brass tone of the JS over the Coleman. The Coleman is great at sessions though and can drown out any fiddle player or box player sitting next to me! Lol ...Volume... it has ;)

Very well done review. People must understand there is a difference between a custom made whistle and a mass produced whistle which naturally effects the cost. Everyone has a different budget and preference in sound of an instrument. Intonation may be the priority or should be while many players must stay within their particular budgets. All said, to each their own. @CutiePie btw, counting down to your big day and wondering how you'll announce it :) Have a beautiful thirtieth weekend and be well.

I don't usually recommend high end or expensive whistles to beginners, because it's a waste of money if you find you never play it. I usually recommend something cheap and cheerful (Clarke Sweetone or Feadog Pro) while you're getting used to the fingering and breath control, then treating yourself to an upgrade 6 months down the line (kind of like a reward for doing well and sticking with it) 😆

I'll be honest, I wouldn't have spent that kind of money on a high whistle for myself...I bought this mainly to be able to share the experience of it with my KZbin followers who are interested in high end whistle reviews :) I have a lot of whistles, some much cheaper and some more expensive. I'm a fan of Clarke whistles and own two Sweetones, but this is a considerably better instrument in every way - build quality, sound, easy of playing - you can certainly see, feel and hear the quality. That being said - sound is a very personal thing. I still personally prefer the sound of my Chris Wall Sweetbrass, and that cost considerably less. As for the 'manufacturer' being lazy - I'd have to disagree there. It's a handmade instrument, not a factory churned out piece. I'm pretty sure the waiting times are due to the demand and the amount of work (undertaken by ONE man) and time needed to make each instrument by hand :)
