It was very likely John would of been found still even if he didnt go after Micah. The only reason Ross didnt find John between chapter 6 and the Epilogue is due to John, Abigail, and Jack moving constantly from what we know they moved pretty much the entire timespan from after Arthurs death to finally settling at Beechers Hope.

@@CalebStearnstrue. Ross 100% would have. John only sped up the process, he was super sloppy, leaving traces of himself everywhere.

Would have been found anyways. He was actively tracked by the law, they found javier, so of course would find john beetcher's hope is near blackwater where a federal bureau is getting built to erradicate outlaws in the west (the law trying hardly to erradicate outlaws in usa started before rdr2, but in rdr1 there's even the army on it) as john says : ppl don't forget, nothing is forgiven" which is proven in both games to be true, if john doesn't flee, it's especially cause he will never be free.... John avoided charles and sadie to be killed, stopped micah's gang which couldn't be stopped since years by authorities (they are killers, rapists... so it's objectively a good thing), gained a lot of money, the fact they are poor and struggling with money in rdr1 means it would have been waaay worse without this money...

He will be found either way. Playing rdr2 epilogue make you realised how incredibly sloppy John Marston is. Buying ranch near his gang biggest massacre with his real name is not even his biggest stupidity
