Sykes’ solos aren’t good because they’re “challenging,” they’re good because they’re good. And there are many “challenging” solos in the world of shred guitar that are utterly forgettable. Then you have a solo like Cinderella’s “Nobody’s Fool” that is slow and rather simple, yet a great solo.

He got phucked over big time, then he picked up the pieces and started over just for grunge to take over the music scene. Then the music industry, business side, changed and not for tbe better for musicians. Its difficult to keep getting back up after being beaten down...especially as you age .. more to life than that . Most criminally underrated guitarist that ever lived. The man was phenomenal and had a tone and style is unparalleled. Fuck, David Coverdale had to hire Vivian Campbell and Adrian Vandenberg to try to do together what John Sykes could do by himself. That speaks volumes

There were always 2 guitar players what are you talking about? I agree that Sykes is one of the best to have played in Whitesnake but he wanted to kick David out of his own band when he was ill and actually be the new leader. So basically that's why Coverdale fired him when he heard it . I mean who wouldn't? Yes I understand, they should do what's best for the band but when you know that one of the members actually wanted you off when you were ill and couldn't sing how do you continue touring and writing songs together?

Guitarist:yes, the rest:no. Sykes, like a lot others, needs a writing buddy. His vocals are all ok, but nothing more. The proof is in his output. First Blue Murder is a washed out 1987, and I can't even remember a single song from the second. I like his work for Whitesnake and for Lizzy on Thunder and Lightning (both bands were better without him), but he only co-wrote Cold Sweat. That's all he did. And anyone that says his solo albums are good are liars. Hard to tell how much he brought to the table when he was in Tygers of Pan Tang (yes, I'm that old) since they all shared the credits. His soloes are good, but nothing spectacular (best soloing is on Live Portion nr.9. There is a reason why they never got big….so: great guitar player from 1982 and forwards. 1987 would not have been a hit without him, but that's it. Disagree as much you want, but these are the hard facts. And: Whitesnake has always been Coverdale, after all the title of the fist album was 'David Coverdale White Snake'.

@@mozartsmate6358 I read that the actual story was Coverdales mother got one look at Sykes during a rehearsal and told David to get rid of him before he steals the spotlight. 😂 Coverdale fired him over the phone and wouldn’t even meet with him face to face. The real reason was royalties and publishing issues though. Coverdale didn’t want to equally share songwriting credit with Sykes. Even though John wrote most of that album. Listen to that album then listen to anything that came after. Sykes wrote those songs and Coverdale didnt want to pay or properly credit him.Never heard anything about Sykes trying to stab him in the back. How could he he was a hired gun. He just wanted proper credit.

@@joedell71 When Coverdale was recovering from throat surgery, Sykes put it to the rest of the band that they should get rid of Coverdale and that they either hire a new singer, or Sykes would take over fronting the band including the vocals. When Coverdale got wind of it, he fired the whole band, quite rightly in my personal opinion. It was Coverdales band, he was the bands founder, leader, songwriter and vocalist. I have this on very good authority from a personal friend who is very close to both Coverdale and Sykes. Also, please read the book Sail Away, the full facts on this are in it. Best wishes to you.

@heavenhelp198210 жыл бұрын
Pierre Morelle Get it right, man...Coverdale brought a tape to Sykes that featured a riff by Blackmore, which was far from the finished version that ended up on the album. Sykes developed that riff and in Coverdale's own words: "twisted it and took it further, as only John could!". No doubt the song would have turned out very different if not for Sykes' involvement, so don't kid yourself by trying to downplay his input or only crediting it to Coverdale & Blackmore...as for the older songs from past Whitesnake, sure, Sykes has no claim on those and everyone knows it. I think Bill is simply referring to the original music written specifically for the 1987 album

One of them was a song that Ritchie Blackmore and I had been working on which was the basic premise of what would become "Still of the Night". It was totally unrecognizable, so Ritchie doesn't have anything to worry about... neither do I! Ha ha ha! I took it as far as I could then I gave it to Sykesy when we were in the south of France, and he put the big guitar hero stuff on there. John hated blues so I had to work within those parameters. I manipulated to be electric blues, but how he performed it was fabulous for his time and relatively unique because of the songs. Youve got it right dude. Sykes is one of the best All time Heavy Rock Guitar Players. Unique Style and more chops than a Hog Factory ¡ Supreme vocalist

Thanks for posting!! Sykes proves here how amazing he is when he is a 3-piece band playing his own music he wrote and created with Whitesnake, yet it took 5 people to make it happen w/o him!!! Yea....3 vs 5 !! Sykes da man!!

Are You not hearing the keyboard? You do know that knowone in whitesnake except DC played on the album..

It's not a 3 piece, with keys obviously for the strings riff at the famous interlude. But still point agreed that John pulled it off with himself doing 3 roles of the current white snake. (vox plus 2 guitars in WS = one J. Sykes)

Goddamn John Sykes is a fucking beast. Completely unheralded and grossly overlooked for his guitar playing.

Always loved the guitar tracks for this song, just fantastic that Sykes laid down the vocals as well as he did. Simply amazing

None of The mainstream Would EVER have known of “Whitesnake” if there were no JOHN SYKES = Fact.

I loved Whitesnake as a kid. I kept listening to them as I got older and metal/rock fell out of "fashion". These years later I realized I really loved John Sykes' work, not Whitesnake per se (without him).

The man had this tuned lower. The fact that he can play that and sing it at the same time is insane ! This version is slightly harder. Amazing .. underrated guitarist like Steve Stevens
