+Ralphie Leonard Me and a buddy saw blue murder play at l'amour's Brooklyn in '93 with free Q-104.3 tickets/backstage tickets. Watched rehearsal all the time wondering if they had a lead guitar. Shit no, John played lead and rhythm like it was f'n nothing. Our minds were f'n blown.

Nick CHAVEZ II - I saw John at Toad’s Place in New Haven, CT on the same tour (probably within a few days). I was wearing a Thin Lizzy t-shirt I made and he played the solo to Thunder & Lightning about three inches from my face!! I met John afterwards and he told me how he first met Phil Lynott (through producer Chris Tsangerides) and signed my T&L album cover. It was one of the best nights of my life! He was so cool and gracious! L’amours was an amazing venue!! Night after night there were incredible metal acts playing there for years! Man, I miss those days!! Peace, brother!

ChrisWhite85 Sure Chris. I get that. And in many ways I liked the 80s stuff being there and all. Sykes is one of my fav guitar players. However, whitesnake has had several big eras and the first was in the 70s with Marsden who is a great blues player. Shame Coverdale is such an apparent ass. Recognition for the Sykes era never really said that the biggest hits off the 1987 album were actually written by Sykes before he met Coverdale. And they were cracking tracks and he is a cracking guitar player. I wish I had his royalties :)

Marko Mikkilä this is because Coverdale was full of shite and lost confidence and he didn’t want to wait about for David he was in it 50/50 on some of the best rock songs of the 1980s and he wanted them out and he knew the songs would go over brilliantly and he was pissed off waiting about for DAVID and he knew he could sing them just the same

I think Coverdale is amazing but his Ego was too big for both of them to be in the band at the same time. Definitely would have been a good second record that never happened with Sykes. Sad. But still good to always be able to listen to him.

One of the most proficient and badass 'Les Paul Wranglers' _ever!_ Got to see him live in Charlotte, N.C. at a joint called "Rocky's" doing the Blue Murder albums, and he brought it like nobody's business. Singing all that material while tearing up his LP between stereo Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifiers, unbelievable. One of the best rock shows I've ever seen. Got to meet him afterwards, very confident guy, but cool, humble and friendly to his fans as well. Thanks John!

He has astonishing licks and riffs. He was the bright and burning torch for Whitesnake for many years. I always wondered why he never auditioned for Dio. He would have been a classic fit.

Eddie Trunk said that he DID audition for DIO in 82 or 83 but lost out to Vivian Campbell - A decade later Sykes auditioned to replace Steve Clark in Def Leppard - and again lost out to Campbell.

His live vocal sounds better than Coverdales'. Even when Cloverdale was in his prime.
