The biggest name in westerns, the undeniable number one cowboy of all time on screen. A stickler for reality when it came to the guns he used in his movies. Wayne acted in many films during his career, in roles ranging from cowboys, police officers and soldiers. Most required violence and of course firearms. Let’s take a look at some of those movies and firearms. Let me know what I missed in the comments. I’m sure there are many!

Appreciate the effort you put into this, however me being an avid John Wayne western watcher, the Duke carried an 1873 Colt Peacemaker with 4 5/8 barrel, extended grip frame and enlarged trigger guard (Wayne had large hands) and aged Ivory grips. Wayne carried basically the same 1873 Colt in Sons of Katie Elder, Eldorado, Chisum and Hondo and the same basic Buscadero holster tucked high and riding slightly back on his right hip. No fast draw rig for the Duke. One of his 1873 Colts sold at Rock Island Auction in 2021 for 375,000.

The holster rig John Wayne wore in his westerns was not a buscadero rig but a more historically correct belt slide set up that was loosely worn. His Colt SAA was actually fitted to a Bisley grip frame with some modifications to it, one being the oversized trigger guard to accommodate his large hands. Just a side trivia note, the Duke did favor the large loop Winchester '92 and his favorite caliber was the .44-40.

Interesting video. Standards for firearms accuracy in movies has gone way up. Although standards for many other things in Hollywood has gone way down.

Most of JWs westerns took place in the time period BEFORE 1892, so the large loop Winchester Model 1892 was inappropriate for the time periods. The Colt Single Action revolver - not "pistol" was also generally out of time warp in his movies. It debuted in 1873. In one of his most famous westerns; the iconic The Searchers, set just after the Civil War he's wrongfully equipped with both firearms.

Sir, your statements are of course totally correct (reference the Winchester Model 1892 and the Colt 1873 SAA) making the phrase « a stickler for reality for the guns he used in his movies » a rather stupid claim. These two weapons are my favourite guns in my collection to shoot, and at age 70 I would suggest to be still quite good. My favourite John Wayne phrase is « life is hard ….. even harder when you are stupid », the saying seems rather appropriate, would you agree?

If you define shooting a weapon "accurately" as the bullet landing somewhere on the ground in the general direction the barrel was pointed when fired, then yes, the Pattern 1853 was fairly accurate at 1200 yards. However, to the rest of the world, maximum effective range of that weapon was closer to 300 yards. Also, the Winchester model 1892 was never considered "the gun that won the West" - that title goes to a repeating rifle from 20 years ealier. The scene you were showing is from Rio Lobo - which was set not long after the Civil War, so late 1860's? MAYBE early 70's. To say he used a double barrel shotgun is like saying he used a pistol. You didn't identify the gun. If you want to sound like you know what you're talking about (is this even a human speaking or are you a machine?) it's pronounced "nineteen eleven" not "nineteen one one". Though the setting in a lot of Westerns can't be pinpointed by year, there are some that can come pretty close. The Comancheros, for instance, was set in the time of the Republic of Texas (1835 to 1845) in which everyone carried rifles that wouldn't be invented for three or more decades. That was a big one for you to miss. So basically, neither you nor your script writer have any idea what you're talking about, so I'll decline your offer to check out your other videos.

Your comment on the Pattern1853 reminds me of what U.S. Grant said about the muskets the American Army used in the Mexican War: "A man could shoot at you all day and you wouldn't know it."

John Wayne's personal choice for single action pistol wasn't a .45 Colt, but the 44-40 Colt SA. He also preferred Greener Shotguns to any other, the Gene Autry museum has several of his personal weapons, as well as those used in film.

The revolver Wayne carries in The Big Trail is a Remington Army model 1858, not the Colt 1851 Navy. Note the strap over the cylinder, not to mention the overall size. Also, the first "Winchester-twirling" in Stagecoach was the idea of rodeo star, actor, stuntman and later director Yakima Canutt, who'd once seen it done in a wild west show. The Winchester 1892 from Stagecoach with the D-ring lever is (or, at least, was) on display at the NRA Museum near DC. Wayne later (Rio Bravo and others) used a lever with a more oval shaped lever loop.

Not one to spoil a good story, but look again at 1:54. It’s certainly a Colt with NO BACKSTRAP and the wedge is there. Definitely a ‘51 Navy (found a pic in the Numrich catalog).

I loved The Duke, but his movie the Comancheros was one of the most anachronism ridden movies ever made. It supposedly was set before the Civil War yet had the wrong pistols and rifles. The weapons used were not available until 1860 and later.

The Coen brothers did a decent job with True Grit. The young actress they cast as the girl was a much better fit for the role. But the choices they made for Jeff Bridges playing Rooster, while probably more accurate to the book, just didn't live up to the John Wayne version. I know a lot of people disliked Wayne's buffoonish behavior through most of the film but that was what made the meadow shoot out the iconic piece of cinema it is. The Bridges/Cohen Rooster may have been a little old and tired but you never doubted he'd stand up when the time came. With the Wayne/Hathaway Rooster it was "Yeah he's a joke now. These guys are just going walk all over.... WHAT!?"

The use of the Winchester model 92 rifle wasn’t historically accurate for the time period of most of John Wayne’s western movies the Winchesters manufactured at those times of the 1870s and 1880s were the models 1866 Yellowboy The 1873 or 73 the gun that won the west and the 1886 and all used black powder cartridges the model 1892 or 92 did not come about until the 1890s Winchester then developed the 1894 or 94 theyfired smokeless powder cartridges!
